Chapter 4: The Secret I Buried

The name on the document was not mine.

It was my father’s.

*Jonathan Carter.*

Daniel stared at the page like the words themselves had become impossible to understand.

“You knew?”” he whispered.

I frowned.

“Knew what?””

My father closed the folder.

“Not here.””

Daniel looked between us.

“No. You don’t get to walk into my house, threaten my family, and refuse to explain.””

My father’s expression didn’t change.

“Your family humiliated my pregnant daughter in front of two hundred people.””

Daniel flinched.

“That wasn’t my intention.””

My father stepped closer.

“Intentions don’t erase consequences.””

The room went silent.

I had never seen Daniel afraid before.

Not truly afraid.

But now he was.

Because for the first time, he wasn’t facing the quiet woman who always forgave him.

He was facing the man who taught me never to accept disrespect.

My father placed the folder back on the table.

“Emma, I think it’s time you know everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“Everything about what?””

He looked at Daniel.

“About your husband.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Mr. Carter—”

“No.””

My father’s voice was calm.

That made it worse.

“I stayed silent because my daughter asked me to.””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He turned toward me.

“When you told me you wanted to marry Daniel, I investigated his family.””

My heart dropped.

“You investigated him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father’s eyes softened.

“Because I lost your mother when she trusted the wrong people.””

The mention of my mother made me quiet.

He continued.

“I promised myself I would never let anyone destroy your life while I stood by.””

Daniel shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.””

My father ignored him.

“The company Daniel works for didn’t become successful because of his family.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

My father opened the folder.

“Three years ago, your company was weeks away from bankruptcy.””

I looked at Daniel.

He avoided my eyes.

“What?””

My father continued.

“Your father’s business had millions in hidden debt. Investors were leaving. Banks refused new loans.””

Daniel’s voice became defensive.

“That’s not true.””

My father placed another document down.

“Then explain this.””

Daniel picked it up.

His hands moved slightly.

A small reaction.

But I noticed.

Because I had spent three years studying every expression on his face.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

My father did.

“A rescue investment.””

I looked confused.

“From who?””

My father looked at me.

“From me.””

The room stopped.

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Three years ago, I bought enough shares to save Daniel’s company.””

Daniel looked furious.

“You invested anonymously.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father looked at me.

“Because Emma asked me not to interfere.””

I remembered that day.

I had told my father I didn’t want his money.

I wanted a normal marriage.

I wanted Daniel to love me for me.

Not because of my family.

I had hidden my father’s identity because I wanted to know if Daniel would choose me without knowing my background.

And for three years…

He did.

But maybe not for the reasons I believed.

Daniel looked at me.

“You knew?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“Your father owns part of my company?””

My father corrected him.

“More than part.””

Daniel swallowed.

“How much?””

My father looked at him.

“Enough.””

The word hung in the air.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

It was a photo.

A photo of Chloe and Eleanor from earlier that night.

But the angle was strange.

It was taken before the ring accusation.

Before they confronted me.

Before my dress was torn.

Below the picture was a message.

*You should know the truth about why Chloe chose tonight.*

I looked at my father.

He saw my face change.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

He studied the image.

Then his expression hardened.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Let me see.””

I pulled the phone away.

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Emma.””

For years, I would have handed it to him.

Tonight, I didn’t.

Because trust was something he had spent.

And I was done giving it away for free.

My father looked at the photo again.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

He zoomed in.

There was something behind Chloe.

A person standing near the gift table.

A person I recognized.

Daniel noticed too.

His face suddenly went pale.

Because he knew exactly who it was.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

Daniel said nothing.

My father looked at him.

“Answer her.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is it?”” I demanded.

He slowly looked at me.

May you like

And the words that came out next changed everything.

“That’s the man who was supposed to be dead.””
