Chapter 9: The Money That Was Mine
I drove home without remembering the drive.
My hands held the steering wheel.
My eyes watched the road.
But my mind was somewhere else.
You did.
Linda’s words repeated over and over.
You did.
When I entered the house, Daniel was sitting in the dark.
He looked up.
“You talked to her.””
“Yes.””
His face tightened.
“What did she say?””
I placed my bag down.
“She said I paid Victor Hale.””
Daniel froze.
The silence was immediate.
Too immediate.
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“Daniel.””
“I knew something happened.””
“What does that mean?””
He stood.
“Emma, please listen.””
I laughed softly.
“That sentence has never ended well.””
He stepped closer.
“When Victor came after my mother, I tried to fix it.””
“You said you couldn’t pay.””
“I couldn’t.””
“Then how did the debt disappear?””
He looked at the floor.
And I knew.
“Daniel.””
“I used company funds.””
My entire body went still.
“What?””
“I repaid the debt through a business account.””
“You stole from my company.””
“No.””
“You used money I built.””
“I was going to replace it.””
“When?””
He had no answer.
“When were you going to replace it?””
His silence was enough.
I walked away.
Every memory suddenly looked different.
Every vacation.
Every dinner.
Every time he told people we built our life together.
Had he believed that?
Or had he just gotten comfortable living inside something I created?
“I’m sorry.””
I turned around.
“I know.””
He looked surprised.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
“Because being sorry doesn’t erase what happened.””
Daniel sat down.
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“My mother told me Victor would ruin us.””
“You believed her.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Because the hardest part was that I believed Daniel was not cruel.
He was afraid.
But fear could still destroy people.
My phone buzzed.
Rachel.
I answered.
“Emma, we found the original transfer.””
“Where?””
“In archived company records.””
“And?””
A pause.
“It wasn’t Daniel who authorized it.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The signature was copied.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel’s voice became serious.
“Someone forged your husband’s authorization.””
I stood still.
“Who?””
“We’re still investigating.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked confused.
Then terrified.
“Emma…”
I lowered the phone.
Because suddenly, the story changed again.
Daniel had hidden something.
But maybe he wasn’t the person who created it.
Maybe he had been trapped too.
The next morning, our lawyer arrived with new information.
She placed a document on the table.
“This changes everything.””
I looked at the paper.
“What is it?””
“A copy of the original agreement with Victor Hale.””
I scanned the page.
Then stopped.
Because at the bottom was a signature.
Not Daniel’s.
Not mine.
Linda’s.
But beneath it was a handwritten note.
One sentence.
One sentence that made my blood run cold.
*If anything happens, blame Emma Carter.*
I looked up.
“She planned this.””
My lawyer nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel stared at the paper.
“My mother…”
For the first time, he said the words I had been waiting to hear.
“She never wanted to protect me.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I closed the folder.
“She wanted someone to blame.””
And then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Emma Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Victor Hale.””
The room went silent.
“I think you and I need to discuss what your mother-in-law did.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What did she do?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“She didn’t just use your company.””
“She used your husband.””
May you like
And before I could respond, he added:
“She used you too.””
