Chapter 11: The Reason He Chose Me

I didn’t confront Daniel immediately.

That surprised him.

Maybe he expected anger.

Maybe he expected another argument.

Instead, I waited.

Because I had learned something important.

People reveal more when they think they still have control.

That evening, Daniel found me sitting in my office.

“You’re quiet.””

“I’m thinking.””

“About what?””

I looked at him.

“Why did you marry me?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

He sat down.

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice stayed calm.

“I want the truth.””

He looked away.

And that hurt.

Because hesitation had become the language of our marriage.

“I married you because I loved you.””

I watched him carefully.

“But?””

He closed his eyes.

“There was a reason my mother liked you at first.””

I froze.

“Your mother liked me?””

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s hard to believe.””

“It was before.””

“When?””

“Before she realized she couldn’t control you.””

I waited.

Daniel continued.

“When I met you, my life was falling apart.””

I knew that.

He had told me pieces.

A failed job.

Family problems.

Debt.

“I thought I was a failure,” he said.

I softened slightly.

“And then you showed up.””

“How?””

“You didn’t care about what I could give you.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“When we met, you didn’t know who I was.””

I remembered.

A small coffee shop.

A spilled drink.

A conversation that lasted three hours.

He had been nobody to me.

And I had been nobody to him.

“You were the first person who treated me like I wasn’t broken.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“I fell in love with that.””

I looked down.

“Then why did you hide so much?””

“Because my mother convinced me that if you knew everything, you would leave.””

“And did you believe that?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was better than another lie.

My phone buzzed.

A message from my lawyer.

*We found the original email chain. You need to see this.*

I opened the attachment.

My blood ran cold.

The emails were between Linda and an unknown person.

The dates were from before Daniel and I met.

I read the first line.

*She is exactly what we need.*

I stopped.

“What?””

Daniel noticed my face.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?””

I scrolled.

Another email.

*Once she marries Daniel, the company connection becomes easier to access.*

Daniel looked sick.

“No.””

I kept reading.

Another message.

*Daniel is emotional. He will follow instructions if he believes he is protecting his mother.*

Silence.

The truth was finally becoming clear.

Linda didn’t just manipulate after I joined the family.

She had planned before.

She had chosen me.

Daniel whispered:

“She used our marriage.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He stood suddenly.

“I need to talk to her.””

“No.””

He stopped.

“What?””

I shook my head.

“She wants you angry.””

“She destroyed our lives.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the email.

“But anger is what she understands.””

Daniel stared at me.

“Then what do we do?””

I closed the file.

“We stop playing her game.””

The next morning, we invited Linda to the house.

She arrived smiling.

Too confident.

“I knew you would come around.””

I looked at her.

“Sit down.””

She noticed Daniel was not standing beside her.

That bothered her.

“What is this?””

I placed the printed emails on the table.

Her smile disappeared.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You should have destroyed those.””

The words left her mouth before she could stop them.

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew.””

Linda’s face changed.

And for the first time, she realized something.

The son she controlled for years was no longer alone.

He was standing with me.

She slowly sat down.

Then whispered:

“You have no idea who you’re fighting.””

And that was when the front door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Someone I had never seen before.

Linda smiled.

“Good.””

May you like

She looked at me.

“Now you’ll understand.””
