Chapter 6: The Secret Between Them

The next morning, Daniel knew something was wrong before I said a word.

“You look scared.””

I placed my coffee down.

“Someone called me last night.””

His expression changed.

“Who?””

“Patricia. Your mother’s friend.””

He frowned.

“What did she say?””

I watched him carefully.

“She said your mother has a secret.””

Daniel immediately looked away.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“You know something.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I leaned back.

“You hesitated.””

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

He stood.

“Emma, please.””

Please.

Not denial.

Not anger.

Fear.

“What is it?””

He walked toward the window.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“My mother has always been afraid of losing control.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He turned around.

“It’s the reason I never told you everything.””

My chest tightened.

“Everything about what?””

He looked at the floor.

“Before we met, my mother made a decision.””

“What decision?””

“She borrowed money from someone dangerous.””

I frowned.

“You already told me about the loan.””

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“Not from the bank.””

The room went still.

“Daniel.””

“She was desperate.””

“How desperate?””

He swallowed.

“She signed something.””

“What?””

“A personal agreement.””

“With who?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me enough.

“Daniel.””

He finally said the name.

“Victor Hale.””

I recognized it.

Everyone in business circles knew that name.

Not because he was famous.

Because people avoided him.

“He loaned her the money?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“I found out later.””

“When?””

I stared at him.

“A year?””

He looked ashamed.

“I was trying to handle it.””

“You were trying to handle it?””

“Yes.””

“By hiding it from me?””

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed.

A quiet, painful laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“What?””

“That they’re protecting me while making decisions behind my back.””

He looked away.

I continued.

“You didn’t protect me.””

“I know.””

The honesty stopped me.

He sat down.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That if you knew how complicated my family was, you would leave.””

I looked at him.

“And instead, you let your mother walk into my home and destroy my things.””

His face fell.

“I know.””

For the first time, I saw the man beneath the excuses.

Not the husband who avoided conflict.

Not the son who obeyed his mother.

Just a man who had spent years afraid.

But fear didn’t erase damage.

It only explained it.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Ask your husband why he was the one who signed the agreement with Victor Hale.*

I looked at Daniel.

The color disappeared from his face.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He read the message.

And this time, he didn’t deny it.

“Emma…”

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“Did you sign something with him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The silence was enough.

Because suddenly, the question was no longer whether Linda had lied.

It was whether my husband had been hiding the truth from me all along.

And when Daniel finally spoke, the words changed everything.

“I signed it…”

May you like

He looked at me.

“…because my mother promised me you would never find out.””
