Chapter 13: The Proposal That Wasn’t Real
I didn’t cry.
That was the strange part.
After everything that happened, after the lies, the hidden debt, the documents, the recordings, the manipulation…
I thought this would be the thing that broke me.
But I didn’t cry.
I just stood there.
Looking at the man I had loved for nine years.
“The proposal was a deal?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost empty.
“Answer the question.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
The word landed harder than any scream could have.
I walked backward slowly.
“So the day you got down on one knee…”
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked desperate.
“I loved you.””
“After the deal?””
“Before.””
I laughed.
A small, painful sound.
“How convenient.””
“It’s the truth.””
“Then why was there a deal?””
He sat down.
“I was supposed to convince you to invest in my mother’s business idea.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“My mother knew you had money. She knew your company was growing.””
My hands became cold.
“She wanted access.””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I agreed.””
The silence that followed felt unbearable.
Not because I didn’t understand.
Because I understood too much.
Every moment.
Every conversation.
Every time he asked about my work.
Every time he encouraged me.
I wondered which parts were real.
“You approached me because of my company.””
“No.””
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
“Then what was I?””
Daniel stood.
“Emma, you were never just a way to get money.””
I looked at him.
“But I was part of the plan.””
He had no answer.
And that was enough.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the street was quiet.
Normal.
People were walking dogs.
Cars were passing.
Someone was laughing.
The world kept moving while mine stood still.
“When did you fall in love with me?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emma.””
“When?””
He whispered:
“Before the proposal.””
“How do I know?””
“You don’t.””
That honesty hurt.
But it was the first honest thing he had said.
“I know I ruined everything.””
I turned around.
“You did.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“No, Daniel.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t.””
His eyes met mine.
“You keep thinking the problem is that you made mistakes.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“The problem is that every time you had a choice between protecting me and protecting yourself, you chose silence.””
His face fell.
“I was afraid.””
“I know.””
“Then why can’t you understand?””
“Because being afraid doesn’t give you permission to make me the victim.””
The room went silent.
My phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered.
“Emma.””
“What happened?””
“We found more records.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What kind?””
“Your mother-in-law wasn’t just planning access to your company.””
I waited.
“She was planning ownership.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
Rachel hesitated.
“She created a private agreement.””
“With who?””
A pause.
Then:
“With Daniel.””
I looked at him.
He shook his head.
“No.””
Rachel continued.
“The agreement states that after marriage, certain assets would become jointly controlled.””
I closed my eyes.
The words barely registered.
After marriage.
Not before.
After.
Linda had planned this from the beginning.
My relationship.
My home.
My company.
Everything.
I ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
“I didn’t sign that.””
“I believe you.””
He looked surprised.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
A small amount of relief crossed his face.
Then disappeared.
“Then what happens now?””
I looked at the man I still loved.
That was the worst part.
Love didn’t disappear just because someone hurt you.
Sometimes it stayed.
And made every decision harder.
“I don’t know.””
The next morning, I made a decision.
I called a press conference.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I wanted the truth outside the hands of people who could manipulate it.
But before I walked into that room, I received one final message.
From Linda.
One sentence.
*If you expose me, I will expose the one thing Daniel did that you will never forgive.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Because after everything…
I still didn’t know what that was.
