Chapter 8: Daniel’s Hidden Truth

I looked at Daniel.

The man who had spent years telling me everything was fine.

The man who had smiled at me across breakfast tables.

The man who had held me when my father died.

Now he stood in his mother’s office, surrounded by evidence against me.

And somehow, he looked afraid for me.

Or maybe afraid of me.

“What story?”” I asked.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily—”

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I expected.

“No more half-truths.””

Patricia watched us silently.

Enjoying every second.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom, leave.””

She laughed.

“You finally grew a backbone?””

“Leave.””

Patricia picked up her purse.

But before walking away, she whispered:

“She deserves to know.””

Then she left.

The door closed.

Daniel and I stood alone.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I pointed at the file.

“My name is on that.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“What’s inside?””

“Things from before we met.””

I frowned.

“Before we met?””

He looked exhausted.

“Emily, when I met you, I didn’t know everything about you.””

I felt a strange fear building.

“What does that mean?””

He sat down.

“I found out later.””

“Found out what?””

He looked at the floor.

“That your father knew my father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Years before we met.””

I didn’t understand.

“My dad passed away.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you talking about?””

Daniel opened another drawer.

He pulled out an old document.

“This.””

I took it.

It was a newspaper clipping.

A business article.

My father’s name was there.

And beside it was Robert’s name.

Daniel’s father.

I read the headline.

*“Two Business Partners Face Lawsuit After Company Collapse.””*

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your father and mine were partners.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“They owned a company together.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because it happened before you were old enough to understand.””

I looked back at the article.

“What does this have to do with Patricia?””

Daniel was quiet.

“Everything.””

I waited.

“She believes your family ruined hers.””

I stared.

“That’s why she hates me?””

“Yes.””

The room spun slightly.

“All these years…”

Daniel nodded.

“She thought you married me because of what happened.””

“That’s insane.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

My voice cracked.

“Because you knew.””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“You knew your mother hated me because of my father?””

“Yes.””

“And you married me anyway?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t know how bad it was.””

“You knew enough.””

He didn’t argue.

That was worse.

I walked toward the window.

“So the soup wasn’t about the soup.””

“No.””

“The insults weren’t about my cooking.””

“No.””

“The divorce wasn’t because you felt trapped.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I turned around.

“You let me believe I wasn’t good enough.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

He stood.

“Yes.””

“By planning a divorce?””

“I was going to take you away from this.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel looked desperate.

“Mom had been getting worse. I knew she was investigating you. I knew she was looking for something to use against you.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His face fell.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of your mother?””

He nodded.

The honesty surprised me.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

“You weren’t protecting me.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Daniel looked like he wanted to disagree.

But he couldn’t.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him answer.

“Dad?””

A pause.

Then Daniel’s expression turned pale.

“What do you mean she found it?””

I stepped closer.

“Found what?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

He looked at me.

Then at the file.

“Your father didn’t destroy my family.””

I waited.

“Someone else did.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“My mother.””
