Chapter 3: The Secret Dinner

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat on the edge of my bed staring at the wedding photo on my nightstand.

Daniel and me.

Seven years ago.

Both of us smiling like we had discovered the secret to happiness.

I remembered that day so clearly.

He held my hands and promised, “I’ll always choose you.””

I believed him.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Not that he lied.

That I believed every word.

At 6:13 in the morning, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I watched it vibrate.

Once.

Twice.

Five times.

Finally, it stopped.

A minute later, a message appeared.

“Come home. We need to talk.””

I almost laughed.

Come home.

Like I still belonged there.

Like he hadn’t watched me leave with tears running down my face.

I didn’t answer.

Ten minutes later, another message.

“Emily, this is getting out of control.””

I stared at those words.

Getting out of control.

That was what he called my reaction.

Not his mother’s cruelty.

Not his betrayal.

My reaction.

By noon, I was sitting at a coffee shop downtown when the same unknown number called.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then:

“My name is Claire.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Claire from the photo?””

She exhaled slowly.

“Yes.””

I waited.

I wanted an explanation.

An excuse.

Anything.

Instead, she said something I wasn’t prepared for.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked out the window at people walking through the busy Chicago streets.

“Sorry for what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

My stomach twisted.

“What does that mean?””

Claire was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because Daniel told me he was leaving you.””

I closed my eyes.

The world became strangely quiet.

“He told you that?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

A year.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Claire, who are you?””

Her voice became softer.

“I’m Patricia’s assistant.””

I froze.

The same Patricia who threw soup in my face.

The same woman who spent years criticizing everything I did.

The same woman who always seemed to hate me.

“She knew?”” I whispered.

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

“She knew,” I repeated.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“Longer than you think.””

I left the coffee shop without finishing my drink.

I didn’t even remember walking to my car.

My entire marriage suddenly looked different.

Every late night.

Every business trip.

Every time Daniel defended his mother.

Every time Patricia attacked me.

It wasn’t random.

It was part of something.

When I arrived home, Daniel was waiting outside.

He looked exhausted.

For a second, the old Emily inside me wanted to run into his arms.

Then I remembered the soup.

The ring.

The phone call.

I stayed where I was.

“Emily,” he said.

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

His face changed.

“You talked to Claire.””

I froze.

“How do you know her name?””

He said nothing.

That was when I knew.

I stepped closer.

“You knew she would contact me.””

“Emily—”

“You knew.””

He looked away.

And for the first time, Daniel looked guilty.

Not sorry.

Guilty.

I whispered:

“How long have you been lying to me?””

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, Patricia’s car pulled up behind him.

She stepped out.

And in her hand was a folder.

She looked directly at me.

“Since you want the truth so badly…”

She held the folder up.

“Maybe you should see what your husband has been hiding.””

I stared at the papers.

Then at Daniel.

May you like

Because suddenly, I wasn’t just fighting for my marriage.

I was fighting to understand why everyone had been trying to destroy it.
