Chapter 12: The Father I Lost Twice
I couldn’t move.
My father stood in front of me.
Older.
Different.
But still him.
The same eyes.
The same voice.
The same tiny scar above his eyebrow I remembered from childhood.
For years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined running into his arms.
I imagined crying.
I imagined asking why he left.
But standing there, I felt something else.
Anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
“You were alive.””
My father looked down.
“Yes.””
“You were alive this entire time.””
Tears filled his eyes.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“How could you let me believe you were dead?””
He closed his eyes.
“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone said that.
Keep you safe.
Protect you.
But somehow, protection always meant lying to me.
“Safe from who?””
He looked toward the road.
Then back at me.
“From Robert.””
My breath caught.
“My father-in-law?””
He nodded.
I walked inside.
I needed walls around me.
I needed something solid.
My father followed.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
“Every year.””
“Every year?””
He nodded.
“I watched from a distance.””
The words hurt.
“You watched me grow up?””
“Yes.””
“You watched me get married?””
His face broke.
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t come?””
“I couldn’t.””
I turned.
“Why?””
“Because Robert knew I was alive.””
Silence.
“He threatened you?””
“He threatened your mother first.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
My father sat down.
“Your mother found out Robert was stealing from the company.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
He looked surprised.
“You know?””
“Patricia told me.””
His expression changed.
“Patricia?””
I nodded.
“She knew everything.””
My father looked away.
“She always did.””
I sat across from him.
“Tell me what happened.””
For the next hour, he told me everything.
Robert had been stealing money.
My father discovered it.
My mother helped him collect proof.
But before they could expose him, Robert found out.
“He threatened to destroy us,” my father said.
“And my mother?””
“She wanted to fight.””
I smiled sadly.
“That sounds like her.””
My father nodded.
“She was brave.””
“Then why did she tell everyone you died?””
His eyes filled.
“Because Robert caused the crash.””
My heart stopped.
“He tried to kill you?””
“Yes.””
“And he thought you died?””
“Yes.””
“Then why disappear?””
My father looked at me.
“Because I knew he would come after you next.””
I looked down.
All my life, I thought my parents abandoned me.
The truth was they were trying to protect me from something I never knew existed.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Daniel.
I ignored it.
Then another message came.
This time from Patricia.
*“You need to come back immediately.””*
A second message followed.
*“Robert knows your father is alive.””*
My blood went cold.
I showed my father.
His face changed instantly.
“No.””
“What?””
He stood.
“We have to leave.””
“Why?””
He grabbed my hand.
“Because if Robert knows, he won’t come after me.””
I looked at him.
“Then who?””
My father looked toward the window.
His voice dropped.
“Emily…”
“He’ll come after the one thing he couldn’t destroy before.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
May you like
My father looked at me.
“You.””
