Chapter 7: The Box Marked Evidence

I stared at the photograph on my phone.

The boxes.

My bedroom.

My belongings.

And that one word written across the cardboard in Patricia’s handwriting.

*Evidence.*

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

Evidence of what?

My marriage?

My life?

My existence?

Then the anger came.

Not the explosive kind.

The quiet kind.

The kind that settles deep inside your bones and makes you stop shaking.

“Claire,” I said slowly.

“What does she mean by evidence?””

Claire looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not true.””

She looked away.

I grabbed the phone tighter.

“Claire.””

She sighed.

“There are things Patricia collects.””

“What things?””

“Information.””

A cold chill moved through me.

“She keeps files on people.””

I stared at her.

“People?””

Claire nodded.

“Everyone who gets close to her family.””

I thought about every conversation I’d ever had with Patricia.

Every time she asked personal questions.

Every time she wanted to know my plans, my finances, my family problems.

I had thought she was interested.

She was collecting ammunition.

“What did she have on me?””

Claire hesitated.

“That’s why I wanted you to see the letter first.””

My heart sank.

“There’s more.””

“Yes.””

I started the car.

“Take me there.””

Claire looked shocked.

“Where?””

“Patricia’s house.””

“Emily, that’s a terrible idea.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“A terrible idea was spending seven years married to someone who let his mother control our lives.””

I drove to the house where I had spent countless holidays pretending everything was normal.

The house looked exactly the same.

Perfect lawn.

Perfect flowers.

Perfect image.

Just like Patricia.

Claire stayed in the car.

“I’ll wait here.””

I nodded.

Then I walked to the front door.

Before I could knock, it opened.

Patricia stood there.

Like she had been expecting me.

“I wondered how long it would take.””

I looked at her.

“You packed my things.””

She smiled.

“You chose to leave.””

“You threw soup at me.””

Her expression didn’t change.

“You’re still focused on that?””

I almost couldn’t believe her.

“Yes, Patricia. I’m focused on the moment my husband watched his mother assault me and called it a lesson.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

I didn’t move.

“I’m not staying.””

“Then why are you here?””

I held up my phone.

“The boxes.””

For the first time, something flickered in her eyes.

Fear.

Small.

But real.

“What about them?””

“You labeled them evidence.””

Patricia smiled.

“So you noticed.””

“What evidence?””

She walked back into the house.

I followed.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I needed answers.

She led me into Daniel’s old office.

A room I had rarely entered.

Inside were shelves filled with folders.

Thousands of pages.

Photos.

Documents.

Notes.

My stomach turned.

“You’re sick,” I whispered.

Patricia looked offended.

“No. I’m prepared.””

“You spy on people.””

“I protect my family.””

I looked around.

“From what?””

She turned toward me.

“From women who pretend to love them.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“Is that what you think I did?””

She laughed.

“You’re exactly like Vanessa.””

There it was.

The name.

The woman before me.

“What happened to Vanessa?””

Patricia’s face hardened.

“She made Daniel weak.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“She made him see you.””

Patricia’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked angry.

Really angry.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for that boy.””

“Sacrifice?””

I looked at the files.

“You destroyed every relationship he had.””

“I saved him.””

“From what?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked to a cabinet.

She opened it.

Inside were more files.

One had my name on it.

*EMILY CARTER.*

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What is that?””

Patricia smiled.

“The reason you’re going to lose everything.””

I reached for the file.

She pulled it away.

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because I want you to understand something.””

She leaned closer.

“Daniel didn’t leave you because he stopped loving you.””

I froze.

“Then why?””

Her smile returned.

“Because he found out the truth about you.””

My face went cold.

“What truth?””

Before she answered, the office door opened.

Daniel walked in.

And he looked more scared than I had ever seen him.

“Mom.””

Patricia turned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, don’t listen to her.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His silence was immediate.

And that silence told me there was something else.

Something even bigger.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

“Because she doesn’t know the whole story.””
