Chapter 3: What the Doctors Found

The operating room lights were painfully bright.

I remember someone asking me to count backward.

I remember Michael kissing my forehead.

And I remember whispering the same words over and over.

"Please save my baby.""

When I woke up, my throat was dry and my entire body felt heavy.

A nurse noticed my eyes opening.

"Emily? Can you hear me?""

I nodded.

"Your daughter is alive.""

I started crying immediately.

"She's okay?""

"She's in the neonatal intensive care unit. She was delivered early, but she's breathing with assistance. The doctors are watching her closely.""

I covered my mouth.

My little girl.

Sophie was alive.

Michael appeared a few minutes later, looking as though he'd aged ten years overnight.

He sat beside my bed and carefully took my hand.

"She's beautiful," he whispered.

"Have you seen her?""

He nodded.

"She's tiny. She has your nose.""

I tried to smile.

"Can I see her?""

"The doctor says they'll take you when you're stable.""

He leaned forward and kissed my fingers.

"I'm so sorry.""

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For not believing you immediately. For letting Mom make you feel like you were crazy in your own home.""

I turned toward the window.

"Michael, I told you she pushed me.""

"I know.""

"You heard me say it, and you still looked at her like you needed proof.""

He lowered his head.

"I know.""

Silence settled between us.

Then I asked the question I'd been afraid to ask.

"Why did she say I was ruining your family?""

Michael looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

He stared at the floor.

"Emily, I found out something about Mom a few weeks ago.""

My heart began beating faster.

"What?""

He rubbed his palms together.

"She'd been asking me to transfer some of our savings into an account she controlled. She said she could get us a better investment return.""

"And?""

"I refused.""

"Then why did you let her handle our insurance paperwork?""

He didn't answer.

I pulled my hand away.

"Michael.""

He finally looked at me.

"Because she told me she was updating the beneficiary information to protect Sophie.""

I stared at him.

"Protect Sophie from what?""

"I don't know. She said there were financial risks I wouldn't understand.""

I let out a bitter laugh.

"Your mother pushed me down a staircase, Michael. I think we've moved beyond financial misunderstandings.""

He closed his eyes.

Before he could respond, Dr. Reynolds entered.

She carried a medical folder and pulled a chair beside my bed.

"Emily, I want to explain what we found.""

Michael stood.

"Is something wrong?""

"The surgery was successful. Your daughter is receiving specialized care, and we're monitoring her condition.""

She paused.

"However, your injuries concern us.""

I swallowed.

"What injuries?""

"You sustained significant abdominal trauma. There are also bruises on your upper arms and shoulders that appear to have developed before today's incident.""

Michael looked at me.

I shook my head.

"I didn't know.""

Dr. Reynolds continued gently.

"We're documenting everything. Given the circumstances you've described, we have a duty to report suspected assault.""

Michael's face hardened.

"Assault?""

"Your wife was injured while pregnant. The medical findings and the account of what happened require further investigation.""

A police officer arrived shortly afterward.

She introduced herself as Detective Laura Bennett.

"Emily, I understand this is difficult, but I need to ask a few questions.""

I nodded.

"Did Diane push you?""

"Yes.""

"Was anyone else in the house?""

"My husband arrived afterward. Our neighbor's son witnessed what happened on the recording.""

Detective Bennett wrote something down.

"Do you remember anything Diane said before the fall?""

I looked at Michael.

Then I remembered the words.

You should have stayed out of my family's business.

"She told me I shouldn't have investigated her.""

The detective looked up.

"Investigated her?""

I explained the insurance folder and the handwritten note.

Michael shifted uneasily.

"I thought it was just paperwork.""

Detective Bennett turned toward him.

"Do you still have those documents?""

"Yes. At home.""

"Please don't alter or destroy anything. We'll need to examine them.""

Michael nodded.

After the detective left, he stepped into the hallway to make a phone call.

I was alone when my phone, which had been brought from the ambulance, vibrated on the bedside table.

An unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then another message appeared.

*Unknown:* Emily, this is Sarah. I'm sorry to bother you, but Noah remembered something else about the recording.

My fingers trembled as I typed.

*Me:* What did he remember?

The reply came almost immediately.

*Sarah:* He said Diane was holding an envelope before she pushed you. He saw her put it inside her handbag afterward.

I stared at the screen.

An envelope?

I typed again.

*Me:* Did the camera record what was inside?

Sarah sent a photograph.

It showed Diane standing at the bottom of our staircase, holding a white envelope.

The image was blurry, but the handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

My name.

And beneath it, three words:

*FINAL BENEFICIARY CHANGE.*

My stomach tightened.

A moment later, Sarah sent another message.

*Sarah:* Emily, there's something else. After the ambulance left, Diane came to our house and offered Noah money if he would say he hadn't seen anything.

I read the message twice.

Then the hospital room door opened.

Michael walked inside.

His phone was still in his hand.

"Emily," he said quietly.

"I just spoke to my mother.""

I turned the screen toward him.

"Then you need to tell me why she was carrying a beneficiary change form when she pushed me.""

Michael's face drained of color.

He sat down slowly.

And after several seconds, he whispered something I would never forget.

"Because, Emily... Mom wasn't trying to protect our money.""

May you like

He looked toward the door to make sure nobody was listening.

"She was trying to make sure she got all of it if something happened to you.""
