Chapter 2: The Little Boy With the Recording
"Grandma pushed her.""
Noah's voice was small, but the words landed like a hammer.
Diane stopped crying.
Michael looked toward the doorway.
"Noah? What are you talking about?""
The boy stepped inside.
His mother, Sarah, appeared behind him, still wearing her work uniform.
"What's happening?"" she asked.
Noah raised his tablet.
"I saw Grandma push Mrs. Emily.""
Diane immediately straightened.
"That's enough, Noah. You don't understand what you saw.""
But Noah shook his head.
"I do understand. You pushed her with both hands.""
Sarah hurried toward the staircase.
"Oh my God, Emily!""
She dropped to her knees beside me.
"Don't move, sweetheart. Has anyone called an ambulance?""
Michael was already dialing emergency services.
"My wife is pregnant. Eight months. She fell down the stairs.""
I tried to speak, but another wave of pain made me gasp.
Sarah held my hand.
"Stay with me, Emily. The ambulance is coming.""
Diane stood near the staircase, twisting a tissue between her fingers.
"Everyone needs to calm down. This is a terrible misunderstanding.""
Noah looked at her.
"It's not a misunderstanding. I saw you.""
Michael turned toward his mother.
"Mom, what is he talking about?""
Diane grabbed his arm.
"Michael, listen to me. Your wife was carrying laundry. She lost her balance. This child wasn't even watching properly.""
Noah's lower lip trembled.
"Mom, she says I'm lying.""
Sarah looked at her son.
"Sweetheart, show them what you recorded.""
Diane's expression changed instantly.
"Sarah, please. He's six. You can't expect anyone to take a little boy seriously.""
Sarah took the tablet.
"Actually, Diane, our doorbell camera records everything outside our front entrance.""
She opened the recording.
A few seconds later, the hallway filled with the sound of a familiar voice.
"Emily.""
The video showed me standing halfway down the staircase.
Then Diane appeared behind me.
I turned.
And she pushed.
Not accidentally.
Not because she stumbled.
She placed both hands against my back and deliberately shoved me forward.
The tablet captured my fall, the scattered baby clothes, and Diane standing over me.
Nobody spoke.
Michael watched the recording twice.
Then he looked at his mother.
"You pushed her?""
Diane's mouth opened.
"Michael, I can explain.""
"You pushed my pregnant wife?""
"She was threatening this family!""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Diane pointed toward me.
"She went through your private documents. She was asking questions about money. She was trying to turn you against me.""
Michael's face tightened.
"That doesn't answer my question.""
Diane stepped closer.
"She was going to ruin everything.""
Sarah lowered the tablet.
"I've already sent a copy of that recording to my husband. He's calling the police.""
Diane spun around.
"You have no right!""
"Your actions were recorded from my property," Sarah replied.
"And I'm not deleting anything.""
The ambulance siren sounded outside.
Two paramedics rushed inside with a stretcher.
One knelt beside me.
"Ma'am, can you tell me your name?""
"Emily Carter.""
"How far along are you?""
"Thirty-two weeks.""
"Are you feeling the baby move?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know. I haven't felt her since I fell.""
The paramedic immediately looked at his colleague.
"We need to move.""
They secured me carefully and lifted me onto the stretcher.
Michael followed.
"I'm coming with you.""
Diane reached for him.
"Michael, wait. We need to talk.""
He pulled his arm away.
"Not now.""
"But I'm your mother!""
He looked at her with an expression I'd never seen before.
"And she's carrying my daughter.""
For the first time, Diane had nothing to say.
As the paramedics wheeled me toward the ambulance, I saw Noah standing beside his mother.
He looked terrified.
I managed a weak smile.
"Thank you, Noah.""
He nodded.
"You're welcome, Mrs. Emily.""
Then the ambulance doors closed.
At the hospital, everything happened quickly.
A nurse connected monitors around my stomach while another checked my blood pressure.
"Try to breathe slowly," she instructed.
Michael stood near the wall, his hands shaking.
"Is the baby okay?"" he asked.
The nurse didn't answer immediately.
She adjusted the monitor and called the doctor.
A few minutes later, an obstetrician entered.
"I'm Dr. Reynolds. We're monitoring your baby's heartbeat and checking for signs of placental abruption.""
Michael swallowed.
"What does that mean?""
"It means the placenta may have separated from the uterine wall. We need to act quickly if we see signs of that happening.""
I reached for his hand.
"Michael...""
He leaned toward me.
"I'm here.""
"Don't let your mother near Sophie.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I won't.""
Then the monitor began making an irregular sound.
Dr. Reynolds looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
"Prepare the operating room. We're not waiting any longer.""
Michael's fingers tightened around mine.
May you like
And as the nurses rushed me toward surgery, I heard the doctor say something that made my blood run cold.
"There's another concern. Her injuries may not be consistent with a simple fall.""
