Chapter 11: Four Million Dollars and a Forged Identity
I couldn't stop looking at the document.
Four million dollars.
A trust established by a grandfather I'd never met.
Money that had apparently been waiting for me since childhood.
And a woman who had spent the last four years treating me like an unwelcome stranger was somehow trying to steal it.
"Why would Diane have any claim to my inheritance?"" I asked.
Richard folded his hands.
"She doesn't. But she knows the trust exists, and she knows who controls it.""
"Who?""
"An investment firm that requires proof of identity and family documentation before releasing the funds.""
Detective Bennett leaned forward.
"How did Diane obtain this information?""
Richard looked at Michael.
"Your mother was married to me when the trust was established. She knew your grandfather's attorney. She also knew the trust could not be accessed until Emily turned thirty-two.""
Michael frowned.
"But Emily is only thirty-one.""
"Exactly.""
Richard opened another folder.
"Three months ago, someone contacted the trust administrator claiming to be Emily Carter. They requested an early distribution.""
My fingers tightened around the wheelchair armrests.
"Who signed the request?""
Richard slid the document toward me.
The signature read:
*Emily Carter.*
But beneath it was another name.
*Authorized representative: Diane Carter.*
Michael stood.
"She was trying to steal Emily's inheritance?""
Richard nodded.
"And when the administrator requested additional verification, Diane submitted the fraudulent insurance documents and several forged medical records.""
I felt nauseated.
"What medical records?""
Richard looked uncomfortable.
"Records suggesting Emily had a serious medical condition that could affect her ability to manage her finances.""
I stared at him.
"She tried to make me look mentally incapable?""
"Yes.""
Michael ran a hand through his hair.
"Why would she do that?""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Because if the trust administrator declared Emily unable to manage her assets, Diane believed she could petition to become her financial guardian.""
Detective Bennett wrote something down.
"Did she have legal grounds to do that?""
"No. But she was preparing to create the appearance that she did.""
I remembered Diane's constant criticism.
The way she called me emotional.
The way she told Michael I was confused.
The way she insisted I was incapable of making decisions without her help.
It hadn't been random cruelty.
She had been building a story.
A story in which I was unstable, irresponsible, and incapable of controlling my own money.
Michael looked at Richard.
"Did Dad know?""
Richard nodded.
"Your father discovered the fraudulent paperwork. He confronted Diane. That's when everything changed.""
"Changed how?""
Richard hesitated.
"Your father wanted to report her. Diane told him she would destroy his reputation, expose his business dealings, and make sure you never spoke to him again.""
Michael lowered his head.
"He never told me.""
"He was trying to protect you.""
I looked at Richard.
"What happened the night he died?""
Richard's eyes filled with sadness.
"He was in a car accident. But he didn't die immediately. He survived long enough to speak to me.""
"Did he say anything about Diane?""
Richard nodded.
"He told me to protect Emily.""
My heart pounded.
"Why?""
"Because he'd discovered Diane was planning to arrange another fraudulent beneficiary change. He believed she might try to harm you if you refused to cooperate.""
Michael covered his mouth.
"She killed him?""
Richard looked toward Detective Bennett.
"I cannot prove that. But I know Diane was at the hospital when he died, and I know she had access to his medical information.""
Detective Bennett closed the folder.
"We'll need to verify every part of this statement.""
Richard nodded.
Then he reached into his coat pocket.
"I brought something else.""
He placed a small photograph on the table.
It showed a little girl standing beside a birthday cake.
I recognized myself immediately.
I was probably five years old.
Behind me stood my mother.
And beside her was another woman.
Diane.
I stared at the photograph.
"Why is she in this picture?""
Richard's voice trembled.
"Because she visited your mother once when you were little.""
I looked at him.
"She knew me?""
"Yes.""
"She knew who I was?""
"Yes.""
I felt the room spinning.
Richard continued.
"Your mother refused to let her take you. Diane became furious. She told your mother that you would eventually belong to her family.""
I shook my head.
"That's insane.""
Michael looked at the photograph.
"Mom told me she'd never met Emily before our engagement.""
Richard gave a bitter smile.
"She lied.""
I suddenly remembered our wedding.
Diane had stood beside the reception table, holding a champagne glass.
When Michael introduced me to one of his relatives, she'd said:
"Isn't it funny how life brings certain people back where they belong?""
I'd thought it was a strange joke.
Now I understood.
She hadn't been surprised to meet me.
She'd been waiting for me.
Detective Bennett's phone rang.
She stepped outside to answer it.
When she returned, her expression was grim.
"Mrs. Carter, we've just received confirmation that your mother-in-law attempted to withdraw funds from a temporary account connected to the trust.""
Michael frowned.
"How much?""
"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
"Did she get it?""
"No. The transaction was blocked.""
I exhaled.
Then Detective Bennett added:
"However, she wasn't acting alone.""
She turned her phone toward us.
A photograph showed Diane entering a bank with a man.
The same man from the old insurance photograph.
Richard leaned forward.
"That's him.""
Michael stared.
"Who?""
Richard's face went pale.
"That's Daniel Mercer.""
I looked at the photograph.
Detective Bennett spoke quietly.
"He's your mother's current attorney.""
Richard shook his head.
"No. He was her attorney when your father died, too.""
Then he pointed to the date.
"He's also the man who signed the medical authorization that was used to access Emily's records.""
Michael slowly sat down.
"Mom has been working with him for years.""
May you like
Richard nodded.
"Yes. And if he's still helping her, then he knows exactly what happened to your father.""
