Chapter 9: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Nobody spoke.

Jason kept staring at the photograph.

His fingers trembled slightly.

“That date is wrong.””

Robert looked over his shoulder.

“No.””

Jason shook his head.

“My father was home that week.””

Diane crossed her arms.

“Was he?””

The question landed heavily.

I looked at the picture.

I remembered that night.

The rain.

The office lights.

The conversation I had tried so hard to forget.

Jason looked at me.

“Sarah.””

I knew what he was asking.

“Tell me the truth.””

I took a slow breath.

“Your father was alive when everyone thought he had retired.””

Jason stared.

“What?””

“He asked me to meet him.””

“Why?””

“To give me something.””

Robert stepped closer.

“What?””

I looked at the photograph.

“The original records.””

Diane’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“No more.””

Jason turned toward his mother.

“You knew?””

Diane didn’t answer.

Robert looked at her carefully.

“You knew he was still investigating.””

Diane’s silence confirmed it.

Jason looked devastated.

“All these years…”

His voice faded.

Diane suddenly became angry.

“You don’t know what happened.””

Jason looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“You were a child.””

“I was twenty-eight.””

“You were my son.””

“And you lied to me.””

The words hit her.

But instead of apologizing, she stepped closer.

“I did what I had to do.””

I felt cold.

“Do you hear yourself?””

Diane looked at me.

“You have no idea what was at stake.””

“No. I know exactly what was at stake.””

I pointed at the photo.

“Money.””

Her face tightened.

“No.””

“Control.””

She said nothing.

Jason picked up the documents.

“Where are the original records?””

Diane looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Robert immediately shook his head.

“She knows.””

Jason looked at him.

“How?””

“Because your father wrote one final note.””

Robert pulled out another page.

A handwritten message.

Jason read it.

His expression changed.

“What does it say?””

He handed it to me.

My hands froze.

The note was short.

But the meaning was terrifying.

*The evidence is hidden where Diane will never look.*

Jason looked around.

“Where?””

Robert studied the room.

“I don’t know.””

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

There was a photo attached.

A picture of my old apartment.

The one I had lived in ten years ago.

Under the photo were six words.

*I found what you buried.*

Jason saw my face.

“What is it?””

I didn’t answer.

Because another message arrived.

This time, with a name.

A name that made Jason step backward.

The sender was:

*Diane’s lawyer.*

May you like

And the message said:

*Your father’s evidence was never hidden. Sarah has had it all along.*
