Chapter 13: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Jason stared at the signature card on the floor.

Nobody moved.

The paper looked ordinary.

Just ink.

Just a name.

But it carried ten years of lies.

He slowly picked it up.

“This isn’t my signature.””

Robert stepped closer.

“That’s what your father believed.””

Jason looked at him.

“Then why did he write my name?””

Robert took a breath.

“Because he thought someone was using you.””

I looked at the signature.

The handwriting was close enough to fool someone.

But not close enough to fool me.

“Jason.””

He looked at me.

“Look at the date.””

He did.

His face changed.

“The day before my father died.””

Nobody spoke.

That date had been haunting us since we opened the box.

The final day.

The final secret.

The final mistake.

Michael walked toward the table.

“There’s something you need to understand.””

Jason looked at him.

“What?””

“Your father didn’t just discover money missing.””

Michael pointed at the card.

“He discovered someone was building a financial identity around you.””

Jason frowned.

“Why me?””

“Because everyone trusted you.””

The answer was simple.

And terrifying.

Michael continued.

“Your father believed Diane was moving money through accounts connected to people she controlled.””

Jason looked at the papers.

“So she used my name.””

“Yes.””

“But why would she risk that?””

I answered before anyone else could.

“Because if something went wrong, everyone would blame you.””

Jason looked at me.

And I saw the realization hit him.

His mother wasn’t just stealing.

She was creating a shield.

A shield made from her own son.

Robert picked up another document.

“There’s one more thing.””

Jason looked exhausted.

“What now?””

Robert handed him the paper.

“This account wasn’t empty.””

Jason read the numbers.

Then froze.

“How much?””

Robert looked at him.

“Over half a million dollars.””

The room went silent.

Jason sat down.

“My father’s money.””

“Yes.””

“And Diane took it?””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“She transferred it.””

“To who?””

Robert hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone connected to the family.””

My stomach tightened.

Again.

That phrase.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Jason looked at Michael.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

My heart dropped.

“Why are you looking at me?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Because your old apartment wasn’t the only place your father hid information.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“He left something with you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I would remember.””

Michael nodded.

“You would.””

That scared me.

Because he sounded certain.

I searched through the box again.

Old papers.

Photos.

Receipts.

Nothing.

Then Jason picked up the old recorder.

“Wait.””

He turned it over.

There was a small mark underneath.

A symbol.

One I recognized.

My breath stopped.

“That…”

Everyone looked at me.

“That symbol was on my father’s old files.””

Robert nodded.

“Exactly.””

Jason looked confused.

“Why would your father put his symbol on your recorder?””

I slowly opened the battery compartment.

Inside was something tiny.

A microchip.

Michael whispered:

“That’s what Diane was looking for.””

The room went completely still.

Jason looked at me.

“Sarah…”

I stared at the chip.

Ten years.

Ten years I thought I had lost everything.

But the truth had been sitting in my hands.

Hidden.

Waiting.

Robert carefully removed it.

Then connected it to his laptop.

A single audio file appeared.

Created ten years ago.

The title was simple.

*For Jason.*

Jason clicked play.

His father’s voice filled the room.

“Jason, if you’re hearing this, then I failed to stop her.””

Jason closed his eyes.

His father continued.

“I need you to know something. Your mother did not act alone.””

My heart raced.

A second voice appeared.

A man.

Jason looked confused.

“Who is that?””

The recording continued.

Then his father said the words that changed everything.

“The person helping Diane…”

May you like

A pause.

“…is your own brother.””
