Chapter 14: The Last Person We Suspected
Nobody spoke after the recording ended.
The silence felt impossible.
Jason stared at the laptop screen.
“My brother?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
I looked at him.
I had never heard him sound so broken.
Robert closed the laptop slowly.
“Your father suspected him.””
Jason shook his head.
“No.””
Michael looked away.
“Jason…”
“No.””
This time louder.
“My brother was twelve when my father died.””
Robert looked at him carefully.
“Your half-brother.””
The words landed hard.
I watched Jason’s face change.
Because suddenly there was another piece of the story.
A piece he never knew.
“Half?””
Diane had never mentioned a half-brother.
Nobody had.
Michael nodded.
“Your father had a son from his first marriage.””
Jason looked stunned.
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because Diane made sure you didn’t.””
Everything came back to her.
Every secret.
Every missing piece.
Every locked door.
Jason stood.
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then Robert opened another file.
A photograph appeared.
A young man.
Older than Jason remembered.
But familiar.
Jason stared.
“That’s…”
He couldn’t finish.
Michael nodded.
“Ethan.””
The name hung in the room.
Jason sat down again.
“My father never told me.””
“He tried.””
Robert looked at the documents.
“But before he could explain everything, he died.””
I looked at the photograph.
“So Ethan helped Diane?””
Michael nodded.
“He knew about the accounts.””
“Why?””
“Because Diane promised him something.””
Jason looked angry.
“What?””
“The inheritance.””
The room went quiet.
Robert explained.
“Your father changed his will because he discovered the truth.””
Jason looked at the old letter.
“The real will.””
“Yes.””
“What did it say?””
Robert hesitated.
Then opened the final document.
“Your father left the company assets divided between his children.””
Jason frowned.
“And?””
“Diane couldn’t accept that.””
I understood.
She wasn’t just protecting money.
She was protecting control.
She wanted everything.
Jason looked at me.
“And Sarah?””
Robert looked serious.
“She was the witness.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“Your father needed someone outside the family.””
Jason looked at me.
“You were the person who could prove the will was real.””
I finally understood.
Diane didn’t hate me because I was difficult.
She hated me because I was dangerous.
I carried the truth.
Jason looked at the documents.
“Where is Ethan now?””
Michael answered.
“He came back.””
A chill ran through me.
“When?””
Michael looked at his phone.
“Today.””
As if summoned by his name, a notification appeared.
A message.
From an unknown number.
Jason opened it.
One sentence.
*You finally found the truth. Now ask Sarah why she never told you I was alive.*
Jason looked at me.
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
I stared at the message.
Because I knew immediately.
Not because I knew Ethan.
Because I knew the implication.
Someone was trying to make Jason doubt me again.
But this time, they chose the one secret I had never shared.
The one memory I had buried.
The one person I had promised myself I would never mention.
Jason’s voice became quiet.
“Sarah.””
I looked at him.
“Who is Ethan?””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know him.””
Jason stared.
“Then why does he know you?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because ten years ago…
before I left town…
before I met Jason again…
before I rebuilt my life…
I had seen Ethan once.
And he had saved me.
But I had never told anyone.
Not even Jason.
The door behind us suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Calmer.
With the same eyes as Jason’s father.
He looked directly at me.
“Sarah.””
Jason froze.
May you like
The man smiled sadly.
“You really don’t remember me, do you?””
