Chapter 11: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The person standing in the doorway didn’t look surprised.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He wasn’t shocked to see us.

He wasn’t confused.

He looked like he had been waiting.

Jason moved in front of me.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

“My name is Michael Grant.””

Robert’s face changed.

“No.””

Michael smiled slightly.

“Hello, Robert.””

Jason looked between them.

“You know him?””

Robert didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me more than anything.

Finally, he said:

“He worked with your father.””

Jason narrowed his eyes.

“Worked with him?””

Robert looked at Michael.

“He was the person your father trusted before everything changed.””

Michael walked into the apartment.

Slowly.

Confidently.

I tightened my grip on the metal box.

“You followed us.””

Michael looked at me.

“I was trying to stop you.””

“From what?””

“From making the same mistake your father made.””

Jason stepped forward.

“You don’t get to walk in here and talk about my father like you know him.””

Michael looked at him.

“I knew him better than you did.””

The words hit hard.

Jason’s jaw tightened.

“What’s in the box?””

Michael looked at it.

“Something that will destroy more than Diane.””

Silence.

Robert looked angry.

“You’re still protecting her?””

Michael sighed.

“You think this is about Diane?””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It’s about the person who gave her the information.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Michael pointed at the box.

“Open it.””

I hesitated.

Then I unlocked it.

Inside were old papers.

A flash drive.

A small recorder.

And a letter.

Jason picked up the letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

His father’s.

He opened it.

After reading a few lines, his face changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

He handed it to me.

The letter said:

*Sarah, if you are reading this, it means Diane found a way to make Jason question you. I need you to know one thing. I never believed you betrayed me.*

My eyes filled.

Jason looked away.

Robert whispered:

“He knew.””

I continued reading.

*But the person helping Diane was someone much closer than I expected.*

I stopped.

Jason noticed.

“What?””

I looked at the next line.

My hands started shaking.

The name was written clearly.

A name that made the entire room silent.

*Jason.*

Nobody moved.

Jason stared.

“No.””

Michael looked down.

“I told you.””

I looked at Jason.

“You were twenty-eight.””

“I know.””

“You were working with your father.””

“Yes.””

The room felt like it was closing in.

Jason shook his head.

“My father would never think I helped Diane.””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“There’s more.””

Jason looked at him.

“What?””

Robert pointed at the flash drive.

“Your father recorded something before he died.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Something Diane never found.””

Jason picked up the drive.

“Why would my father write my name?””

Michael looked at him.

“Because he suspected someone used your identity.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Michael answered quietly.

“Someone signed documents pretending to be Jason.””

Jason looked at the papers.

Then at his hands.

“My signature.””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

The same thing that happened to me.

Someone had been using their names.

Their identities.

Their trust.

For years.

Jason inserted the flash drive into an old laptop.

A video appeared.

His father’s face filled the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“If you are watching this…”

Everyone leaned closer.

His father looked directly into the camera.

“I failed to protect the people I loved.””

Jason covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

“The person helping Diane is not who you think.””

A pause.

Then his father said the sentence that made my blood run cold.

“The person who betrayed me is still inside this family.””

The video stopped.

The screen went black.

Then the laptop displayed one final message.

A scheduled recording.

Created ten years ago.

*Play this after Sarah returns.*

Jason looked at me.

“Returns?””

Before anyone could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I picked up.

May you like

A familiar voice whispered:

“Sarah… don’t trust Jason.””
