Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I read the sentence three times.
*The authorization was witnessed by Marcus Williams and Brianna Williams.*
My husband.
His daughter.
Both of them.
I slowly lowered Robert's laptop.
"Marcus, what is this?""
He didn't answer.
Brianna wiped her cheeks and stepped toward him.
"Dad, tell her.""
He turned sharply.
"Not another word.""
That was when I realized something important.
Marcus wasn't trying to protect his daughter anymore.
He was trying to keep her quiet.
Robert pulled out a chair and placed the authorization letter in front of me.
"Vanessa, I need you to look carefully at the date.""
I did.
Three months earlier, my father's estate had finally been settled. I'd received the last distribution from his investments, and Robert had handled all the paperwork.
The same week, Marcus had taken me to dinner at an expensive restaurant downtown.
He'd brought me flowers and told me how proud he was of everything we'd built together.
Now I was looking at a document claiming I'd given him financial control over my home.
"I never signed this," I whispered.
Robert nodded.
"I believe you. But we need to establish how this document was created.""
Marcus finally spoke.
"Vanessa, you're misunderstanding the situation.""
I looked at him.
"Then explain it.""
He loosened his collar.
"It was a temporary authorization. We needed to move quickly on an investment.""
"What investment?""
"A commercial property.""
"Where?""
"Outside Atlanta.""
"What company?""
He hesitated.
Robert leaned forward.
"Mr. Williams, if you have a legitimate investment, you should have no difficulty identifying the company.""
Marcus glared at him.
"I don't need to explain my business to you.""
"You're using Mrs. Williams's property as collateral. That makes this very much her business.""
Brianna suddenly interrupted.
"Dad was trying to help us!""
I turned toward her.
"Help you do what?""
She looked at Tyler.
Tyler shook his head.
"Don't drag me into this again.""
Brianna's voice rose.
"You promised we'd have enough money to launch the company!""
"What company?"" I asked.
Tyler rubbed his face.
"An event management business. We were supposed to buy a venue, renovate it, and rent it out for weddings and private parties.""
"With $350,000?""
"That's what Marcus told us.""
I looked at my husband.
"And you planned to use my house to finance it?""
He shook his head.
"I was going to pay it back.""
"With what money?""
"I had a plan.""
"Apparently, that plan involved forging my signature.""
"Stop calling it forgery!""
His sudden shout startled several guests.
Robert stood.
"Then you should have no objection to having the signature independently examined.""
Marcus went silent.
I turned back to the document.
There was a witness section beneath my supposed signature.
Marcus's name appeared first.
Brianna's appeared second.
"Robert, can we verify whether this document was actually submitted?""
"Yes. I'll request the complete transaction history and preserve the evidence.""
I looked at Brianna.
"Did you sign this?""
She shook her head quickly.
"I didn't know what it was.""
Tyler laughed without humor.
"That's interesting. You told me you were the one who printed it.""
Brianna spun around.
"Shut up!""
"You said your father needed a witness.""
"Tyler!""
"You even practiced Vanessa's signature!""
The room erupted in whispers.
I felt as though someone had poured ice water down my back.
"Practiced my signature?""
Tyler nodded.
"She had copies of old birthday cards and Christmas envelopes. She said she needed to make it look natural.""
Brianna's face drained of color.
Marcus grabbed Tyler by the jacket.
"That's enough!""
Robert immediately stepped between them.
"Let go of him.""
Marcus released Tyler.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Brianna started crying again.
"Dad, you said nobody would find out!""
Those words changed everything.
Marcus stared at her.
I stared at both of them.
Nobody would find out.
Not that nothing had happened.
Not that the document was fake.
They had expected to get away with it.
I took a deep breath.
"Robert, I want the bank notified immediately that I never authorized this loan or transferred control of my property.""
"Already on my list.""
"And I want copies of everything.""
"Of course.""
Marcus approached me slowly.
"Vanessa, please. We can fix this privately.""
I looked at the man who had once promised never to let anyone hurt me.
"You had three months to tell me the truth.""
He lowered his voice.
"I was going to.""
"When? After the bank took my house?""
He shook his head.
Then Robert's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and walked toward the window.
When he returned, his expression was different.
"Vanessa, the bank has confirmed something important.""
"What?""
"The authorization letter wasn't submitted yesterday.""
I frowned.
"When was it submitted?""
Robert looked at the document.
"Almost two months ago.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Two months.
They had been planning this long before Brianna's birthday.
Robert paused before delivering the final piece of information.
"The bank also confirmed that someone attempted to change the mailing address on the property account.""
"To where?""
May you like
He looked directly at Marcus.
"An apartment registered under your husband's name.""
