Chapter 11: My Father's Hidden Inheritance
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
"My father left me something else?""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"That's what Patricia told me.""
Robert immediately pulled a chair toward the dining table.
"Let's be precise. What did your father leave Vanessa?""
I shook my head.
"My parents' estate was settled three months ago. Robert handled everything.""
Robert nodded.
"Correct. The estate distribution was completed according to the documents we reviewed.""
"Then what is Patricia talking about?""
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"She said there was another investment account.""
I frowned.
"An investment account?""
"Something your father had established years ago. Patricia said the paperwork was kept separately.""
Robert's expression became serious.
"Did she provide an account number?""
Marcus shook his head.
"She said Daniel had someone who could locate it.""
Robert leaned back.
"That makes no sense. Patricia wasn't involved in your father's estate administration.""
"She knew people.""
"Who?""
Marcus looked at the floor.
I felt anger rising again.
"Marcus, my father died before you and I married. You barely knew him. Why would Patricia have access to his financial records?""
He didn't answer.
Robert took out his phone and called his office.
"Please pull Vanessa's complete estate file, including the original inventory and final distribution schedule. I want to compare every asset with the documents Patricia may have taken.""
He listened.
"Yes. Immediately.""
After ending the call, he turned to me.
"Vanessa, I remember your father mentioning a family investment partnership. But I don't recall it being an undistributed asset.""
I frowned.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it was closed before the final estate distribution. Your mother had been the beneficiary.""
I remembered my mother mentioning something about an investment years earlier.
She'd called it my father's retirement project.
But she'd never explained the details.
"Could Patricia have found old paperwork?""
Robert nodded.
"Possibly. But possessing an old financial document doesn't give anyone authority to claim an asset.""
Brianna suddenly spoke.
"Patricia said the account was worth three million dollars.""
I turned toward her.
"Three million?""
She nodded.
"She said that was why Daniel was willing to help Dad. She said the house was just a temporary guarantee.""
Robert looked sharply at Marcus.
"Did you know about this?""
Marcus nodded.
"Patricia said there was enough money to pay off my debts and still leave something for Brianna.""
I stared at him.
"So you were willing to use my house because your sister convinced you that my father had hidden millions?""
He didn't respond.
Robert's office called back.
He put the call on speaker.
"Robert Hayes speaking.""
A woman answered.
"We located the original estate inventory. There's something you should know.""
Robert sat straighter.
"What?""
"There's a reference to a family investment trust established by Mr. Williams's father-in-law. It was dissolved before probate, but the final distribution record contains a separate beneficiary schedule.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Was there money left?""
The woman paused.
"According to the schedule, the remaining assets were transferred to Vanessa Williams.""
Robert looked at me.
"How much?""
"Approximately $2.8 million at the time of transfer.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"That money was already included in my inheritance?""
"Yes. It appears to have been distributed into the investment accounts managed through our office.""
Robert closed his eyes briefly.
"Thank you. Please send the certified records.""
The call ended.
I looked at Marcus.
"So Patricia wasn't uncovering some secret fortune. She was trying to get access to money I already own.""
Robert nodded.
"That appears to be the case.""
Brianna suddenly sat down.
"But Patricia said the money was waiting somewhere else.""
Robert shook his head.
"According to our records, it was distributed.""
Marcus began pacing.
"Then why did she tell me Daniel could access it?""
I looked at him.
"Because she wanted you to believe there was enough money to justify taking my house.""
Robert's phone vibrated.
He checked an incoming email.
Then his expression changed.
"Vanessa, I need you to see this.""
He turned his laptop toward me.
There was a scanned document attached to the message.
It was a letter supposedly signed by my father.
The heading read:
*PRIVATE FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY TRANSFER INSTRUCTIONS.*
I stared at the signature.
It looked authentic.
But I recognized the date.
My father had been in the hospital that week.
He had barely been conscious.
"Who provided this?"" I asked.
Robert checked the email.
"The document was attached to a message sent to Daniel Carter by Patricia.""
"Is it real?""
Robert enlarged the signature.
"I can't determine that from a scan. We'll need the original and a handwriting examination.""
I leaned closer.
At the bottom of the letter was a paragraph I hadn't noticed before.
It named a second beneficiary.
Someone who wasn't listed in the official estate distribution.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
*Patricia Williams.*
I felt a wave of disbelief.
"Why is my sister-in-law named in my father's trust?""
Robert examined the document.
"She shouldn't be. I have no record of your father naming Patricia as a beneficiary.""
Marcus suddenly stepped backward.
"Vanessa, maybe we should stop.""
I turned toward him.
"Why?""
He swallowed.
"Because I think Patricia told me something else.""
"What?""
He stared at the letter.
"She said your father had promised her a portion of the inheritance before he died.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"My father barely knew her.""
"She said they had a private agreement.""
Robert shook his head.
"Any legitimate agreement would need supporting evidence. We have none.""
I looked at the document again.
Then I noticed something strange.
The letter was dated four days after my father had died.
I pointed to it.
"Robert.""
He leaned forward.
"What?""
I showed him the date.
"My father was already dead.""
Robert's expression hardened.
He carefully saved the document.
"Then this is potentially much more serious than a disputed property claim.""
Brianna began crying again.
Marcus sat down.
And suddenly, the entire room seemed to understand the same thing.
Someone hadn't merely forged my signature.
Someone might have forged my father's signature, too.
Then Robert received another email.
He opened it.
His face went pale.
"Vanessa, Patricia just sent a message to Daniel.""
"What does it say?""
Robert turned the laptop toward me.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
*The original trust document is already signed, and Vanessa has no idea what her father really promised me.*
