Chapter 3: The Photograph That Exposed Everything

For several seconds, the only sound in the living room was the music playing softly near the fireplace.

Tyler stood frozen.

Brianna had both hands wrapped around his arm, but her fingers were trembling.

Marcus stepped between them and the laptop.

"That's enough, Robert. Turn that thing off.""

Robert didn't move.

"Your wife has a right to understand why her property was used in a loan application without her authorization.""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"You're turning a family disagreement into a criminal investigation.""

I looked at him.

"Family disagreement?""

I pointed toward the laptop.

"Someone tried to borrow $350,000 against my house using a forged signature. And you're calling that a family disagreement?""

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

Tyler finally spoke.

"Mr. Williams, I think we should leave.""

Brianna grabbed his sleeve.

"No!""

I turned toward her.

"Why are you afraid of him leaving?""

"Because you're accusing people of things you don't understand!""

"Then explain the photograph.""

She looked at Tyler.

He looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked at Robert.

Nobody looked at me.

Robert enlarged the photograph.

"According to the bank's records, this image was captured yesterday afternoon. The individual was presenting supporting documentation for the loan application.""

I studied Tyler's face.

He wore a dark jacket and a baseball cap. But there was no mistaking him.

"Why did you have my handbag?"" I asked.

Tyler shook his head.

"I didn't.""

"The photograph says otherwise.""

"Maybe you should ask Brianna.""

The room seemed to shift.

Brianna released his arm.

"Tyler!""

He looked at her angrily.

"You told me it was fine!""

"Shut up!""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Both of you need to calm down.""

I stared at my husband.

"Did you know about this?""

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than any answer could have.

"Marcus?""

He sighed.

"Vanessa, listen. I was trying to solve a financial problem.""

"What financial problem?""

He glanced at the guests.

"Not here.""

"Why? You were perfectly comfortable letting Brianna humiliate me in front of these people.""

"That's different.""

"No, Marcus. It's exactly the same. You keep deciding what I deserve to know.""

Brianna suddenly started crying.

It was a dramatic change.

One moment she had been shouting. The next, tears were running down her cheeks.

"Dad, please tell her.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Brianna, not now.""

"She doesn't understand!""

"Then help me understand," I said.

Brianna wiped her face.

"Tyler and I needed money.""

"For what?""

She glanced at him.

He shook his head.

She continued anyway.

"We have a business opportunity.""

"What business?""

"A luxury event company.""

I looked around the room.

The expensive flowers, the professional photographer, the custom decorations.

"Is that why you asked me to pay for this party?""

"No!""

"Then why?""

She threw her hands up.

"Because I wanted one nice birthday! You always make everything about money!""

I stared at her.

"Four thousand eight hundred dollars is not a small amount of money, Brianna.""

"You're rich!""

The words came out without hesitation.

"What's the point of having all this money if you won't help your family?""

Robert quietly closed the laptop.

I felt something cold settle inside my chest.

"Your family?""

She looked at me.

"Yes. Dad and me.""

"And what am I?""

She didn't answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Vanessa, don't do this. Brianna is upset.""

I turned toward him.

"She has just told me that she and Tyler needed money. Your name is on a loan application using my house. My signature has been copied. And somehow, I'm still the person who needs to be understanding?""

He lowered his voice.

"I didn't forge anything.""

Robert immediately responded.

"The signature is currently disputed. The bank has not accepted the application as authorized by the property owner.""

Marcus glared at him.

"Nobody asked you.""

"Mr. Williams, I'm her attorney. That is precisely why I'm here.""

I looked at the documents again.

There were several supporting pages attached to the loan application.

Bank statements.

A property valuation.

A photocopy of my identification.

And something else.

A printed photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed me standing outside a grocery store, holding my handbag.

The photograph had been taken from a distance.

"When was this taken?"" I whispered.

Robert examined it.

"Possibly several weeks ago.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Why were they photographing me?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Tyler suddenly spoke.

"Because they needed to verify when you were away from the house.""

Everyone turned toward him.

Brianna's mouth fell open.

"Tyler, what are you doing?""

He pulled his arm away from her.

"I'm done taking the blame for everything!""

Marcus grabbed his shoulder.

"Watch your mouth, young man.""

Tyler stepped back.

"You told me it would be easy!""

Marcus froze.

I felt my heartbeat quicken.

"What did he mean?""

Tyler looked directly at me.

"Your husband said you wouldn't cooperate if he asked for the money. He said the house was worth nearly two million dollars and that a $350,000 loan would barely affect anything.""

I looked at Marcus.

He was pale now.

"That's not what happened," he said.

Tyler continued.

"He told us the bank only needed your documents and a signature. Brianna said she could get your identification from your handbag.""

My eyes moved toward Brianna.

She was shaking her head.

"He's lying.""

Tyler laughed bitterly.

"Really? Who took the photograph of her driver's license?""

Brianna slapped him.

The sound echoed through the room.

"Shut your mouth!""

One of the guests gasped.

Marcus grabbed Brianna's wrist.

"Enough!""

For the first time that evening, he sounded genuinely frightened.

I slowly sat down.

My legs felt weak.

"Robert," I said, "I want to know exactly what happened.""

He nodded.

"We'll need the bank's complete submission record, the original documents, and confirmation of who accessed your personal information. I'll also advise the bank that you dispute the application and do not authorize any borrowing against the property.""

Marcus stepped toward me.

"Vanessa, please. Don't involve the police.""

I looked up.

"Why?""

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"Because this could destroy Brianna's future.""

I stared at him.

"What about my future?""

He had no answer.

Brianna suddenly rushed toward me.

"Please, Vanessa. You can't do this to us.""

I stood.

"Do what?""

"Make us lose everything.""

I looked at the birthday decorations I'd paid for, the cake I'd ordered, and the expensive gifts stacked beneath the staircase.

Then I looked at the woman who had thrown me out of my own home.

"You told forty people I didn't belong here.""

She began crying harder.

"I didn't mean it.""

"Yes, you did.""

I turned toward Robert.

"Please get the bank's full records. And I want every document connected to this application preserved.""

Robert nodded.

"Of course.""

Then his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen and frowned.

"Vanessa, there's something else.""

"What now?""

He stepped closer and lowered his voice.

"The bank's fraud department just sent an additional attachment. It appears the loan application wasn't the only document submitted.""

My stomach tightened.

"What else did they submit?""

Robert looked toward Marcus.

Then he looked at Brianna.

"An authorization letter claiming that you had agreed to transfer temporary financial control of the property to your husband.""

I stared at him.

"That's impossible. I never signed anything like that.""

Robert opened the attachment.

"That's what I thought.""

He turned the screen toward me.

At the bottom of the document was a signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

And beneath it was a date from three months earlier.

The date of my father's estate settlement.

I looked at Marcus.

His face had gone completely white.

Because suddenly, I understood that the birthday party, the handbag, and the forged loan application might only have been the beginning.

Someone had been planning this for months.

May you like

And when Robert enlarged the final page, one sentence made my blood run cold.

*The authorization was witnessed by Marcus Williams and Brianna Williams.*
