Chapter 7: The Man They Told Me Was Dead

I couldn't take my eyes off the name on the laboratory receipt.

Ethan Brooks.

My former fiancé.

The man I'd loved before Daniel.

The man who had disappeared from my life seven years earlier, shortly after I discovered I was pregnant.

The man Margaret had told me was dead.

I remembered that afternoon clearly.

I had been sitting in my mother's kitchen when Margaret called. Her voice sounded unusually gentle.

"Sarah, sweetheart, I thought you should hear this from me.""

I had asked what was wrong.

She told me Ethan had died in a car accident outside Nashville.

I had cried for hours.

A week later, Daniel appeared at my mother's house with flowers and a promise.

"I know you've been through something terrible," he'd said.

"But you don't have to face everything alone.""

I'd believed him.

I'd eventually married him.

Now, seven years later, his mother's signature was sitting beneath a laboratory instruction bearing Ethan's name.

"Your Honor," I whispered, "I need to know what happened to Ethan.""

The judge looked toward Elaine.

"Counsel, what is the relevance of this information to the current proceedings?""

Elaine stood.

"Your Honor, the evidence suggests a deliberate attempt to manipulate the child's biological records, misrepresent paternity, and potentially influence custody and inheritance arrangements.""

The judge examined the receipt.

"Is this document authenticated?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"I don't know. I found it in Daniel's office.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"She's lying! She stole that document!""

The judge struck the bench with her gavel.

"Mr. Mitchell, you will remain seated.""

Margaret leaned toward her attorney and whispered something.

Her expression had changed completely.

She was no longer pretending to be concerned about Lily.

She looked frightened.

Elaine requested permission to submit the receipt as preliminary evidence and asked the court to consider the disputed documents when evaluating the custody petition.

The judge agreed to preserve the evidence but made clear that the paternity allegations required independent verification.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Mr. Mitchell, did you know about this laboratory report?""

Daniel adjusted his tie.

"I don't know anything about that paper.""

"Have you ever arranged a paternity test involving your daughter?""

"No.""

Rebecca stood again.

"That's not true.""

The judge looked at her.

"Please wait until you're asked to speak.""

Rebecca sat down.

I turned toward Daniel.

"Seven years, Daniel. You let me believe Ethan was dead.""

He finally looked at me.

"Sarah, that was a long time ago.""

"Did you know he was alive?""

He said nothing.

"Did you?""

Daniel's attorney whispered in his ear.

Then Daniel answered.

"I heard rumors.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Rumors? You let me grieve a man who was alive?""

"That relationship was over before we got married.""

"That wasn't my question!""

The judge intervened.

"Mrs. Mitchell, please address your questions through counsel.""

I sat back, trembling.

My father placed his hand over mine.

"Stay strong, sweetheart.""

Elaine requested a short recess.

Outside the courtroom, she approached Rebecca.

"Where exactly did you find that receipt?""

"Inside the black box.""

"Did you see anything else?""

Rebecca nodded.

"There were photographs. Letters. And a bank transfer.""

"To whom?""

"Ethan.""

My heart stopped.

"How much?""

"Fifty thousand dollars.""

I grabbed Rebecca's arm.

"You knew Ethan was alive?""

She started crying.

"I didn't know until I found the letters.""

"When?""

"Three months ago.""

I stepped away from her.

Three months.

She'd known for three months while smiling at me across family dinners.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Daniel threatened me.""

"With what?""

Rebecca looked down.

"He knew I'd helped him with the forged documents. He said he'd report me for fraud and make sure I lost custody of my own son.""

I stared at her.

"Your son?""

She nodded.

"Daniel said he'd use my involvement to destroy my life.""

For a moment, I felt sorry for her.

Then I remembered the money.

The signatures.

The lies.

And Lily crying on the kitchen floor.

I pulled my arm away.

"You made your choices, Rebecca.""

She nodded through her tears.

"I know.""

A courthouse employee approached us.

"Mrs. Mitchell? There's someone asking to speak with you.""

"Who?""

The employee glanced toward the entrance.

"Ethan Brooks.""

I stopped breathing.

My father immediately moved beside me.

"Do you know this person?""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

I walked toward the lobby.

And there he was.

Seven years older.

A little thinner.

His dark hair touched with gray at the temples.

But it was unmistakably Ethan.

He stood near the security desk holding a worn brown envelope.

When he saw me, his eyes filled.

"Sarah.""

I couldn't move.

He took one cautious step forward.

"I know I have no right to ask you to forgive me.""

My voice barely worked.

"You were dead.""

He closed his eyes.

"I know.""

"Your mother told me you died.""

He looked confused.

"Margaret?""

I nodded.

Ethan shook his head.

"Sarah, I never died. I was working overseas when Daniel contacted me.""

"What?""

"He told me you'd moved on. He said you didn't want me involved in your life or the pregnancy.""

I felt dizzy.

"He told me you were dead," I whispered.

Ethan stared at me.

"What?""

I explained what Margaret had told me seven years earlier.

He slowly opened the brown envelope.

Inside were copies of emails.

The first was from Daniel.

It read:

SARAH HAS DECIDED TO RAISE THE CHILD WITH ME. DO NOT CONTACT HER AGAIN.

The second was from Margaret.

It contained a payment confirmation for $50,000.

Ethan looked at me.

"I refused the money. But I signed an agreement not to contact you because I believed you had made your decision.""

"Why didn't you investigate?""

His eyes filled.

"I tried. Every letter came back. Every phone number was disconnected. Then I was told you'd married Daniel.""

I looked at the emails again.

Daniel had separated us before Lily was born.

He had made both of us believe the other wanted nothing to do with us.

Then he had spent seven years building a marriage on that lie.

"Why are you here now?"" I asked.

Ethan handed me the final page.

"Because six months ago, someone contacted me asking for another DNA test.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

He looked toward the courtroom doors.

"Your husband.""

May you like

Then he said something that made my knees buckle.

"Sarah, I didn't come here because I wanted to prove I was Lily's father. I came because Daniel told me someone was planning to take her out of the country.""
