Chapter 6: The Fatherhood Secret

I walked into the courtroom feeling as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.

Daniel sat beside his attorney.

Margaret occupied the first row.

Vanessa sat behind them, holding her folder tightly against her chest.

Rebecca sat alone near the back.

My father sat beside Lily and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

Elaine leaned toward me.

"Don't react to anything until I speak with the judge.""

I nodded.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

After the formal introductions, Daniel's attorney began presenting the petition.

"Your Honor, my client is seeking temporary guardianship arrangements because of serious concerns regarding the mother's emotional stability.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

He continued.

"Mr. Mitchell believes the child's welfare requires an immediate change in living arrangements.""

Elaine stood.

"Your Honor, we object to the premise of this petition. The documents submitted contain disputed signatures, questionable notarizations, and a statement allegedly signed by my client surrendering her parental rights.""

The judge looked over her glasses.

"Has the mother been properly served?""

Daniel's attorney shuffled his papers.

"According to our records, yes.""

Elaine handed the clerk a document.

"We have evidence suggesting otherwise.""

The judge examined it.

"Proceed.""

Elaine explained that I had never signed the surrender statement, had never consented to an adoption, and had never authorized anyone to represent me in the property transaction.

She also submitted the police incident report from the previous evening.

Daniel shifted in his chair.

His attorney stood.

"Your Honor, this is an attempt to distract the court from the mother's documented instability.""

Elaine remained composed.

"Then perhaps Mr. Mitchell can explain why he submitted an application containing a birth certificate with altered information.""

The courtroom became quiet.

The judge looked at Daniel.

"Mr. Mitchell, is this your application?""

Daniel's attorney leaned toward him.

After a brief discussion, Daniel stood.

"Your Honor, I was trying to protect my daughter.""

"From what?""

"From an unstable household.""

Elaine asked permission to approach.

The judge granted it.

She placed the original birth certificate beside the altered version.

"Your Honor, these documents contain different middle names for the child. The newer document also identifies Vanessa Cole in a parental capacity.""

Vanessa lowered her head.

The judge examined the pages.

"Ms. Cole, what is your relationship to the child?""

Vanessa stood.

"I'm a close family friend.""

Elaine asked, "Have you applied to become Lily's legal parent?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Daniel and I discussed it.""

"Did you sign any documents?""

"I signed something.""

"Did you know the child's mother had not consented?""

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

He shook his head slightly.

"I was told Sarah had agreed.""

Elaine raised another document.

"Then why does this email from you say, 'Once Sarah is declared unfit, we can finally raise Lily together'?""

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Daniel's attorney immediately objected.

The judge instructed everyone to remain calm and directed the parties to address the authenticity and admissibility of the evidence through the proper process.

I watched Vanessa sit down.

Then the judge turned toward Rebecca.

"Ms. Mitchell, I understand you may have relevant information concerning the documents before this court.""

Rebecca slowly stood.

"Yes, Your Honor.""

Daniel whispered something to his attorney.

Rebecca looked frightened.

Elaine approached her.

"Do you understand that you're expected to tell the truth?""

"Yes.""

"Did you sign the statement claiming your sister had voluntarily surrendered her parental rights?""

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes.""

"Was that statement true?""

"No.""

A murmur spread through the courtroom.

The judge raised a hand.

"Silence.""

Elaine continued.

"Did you receive money from Daniel Mitchell?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

"Two hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

Rebecca began crying.

"He told me it was for helping him establish a stable home for Lily. He said Sarah was struggling and that the court would eventually understand.""

Elaine asked, "When did you discover the documents were fraudulent?""

Rebecca looked at me.

"Two days ago.""

I stared at her.

"Two days?""

She nodded.

"I saw the altered birth certificate. I realized Daniel had been lying to me.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Rebecca lowered her face.

"Because I'd already spent some of the money.""

I felt something inside me break.

The judge interrupted.

"Ms. Mitchell, you mentioned something about the child's birth. Please explain.""

Rebecca looked toward Daniel.

He shook his head again.

But this time, she didn't stop.

"Seven years ago, when Sarah was pregnant, Daniel told me something privately.""

My heart began racing.

"What?"" the judge asked.

Rebecca swallowed.

"He said there was a possibility Lily wasn't biologically his.""

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

"What?""

Daniel jumped to his feet.

"That's a lie!""

The judge ordered him to sit.

Rebecca continued.

"Daniel knew Sarah had briefly dated someone before they became exclusive. He secretly obtained information about that man's identity and arranged a private paternity test.""

I felt sick.

"Rebecca, stop.""

She turned toward me.

"Sarah, I'm sorry. But he knew before the wedding.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Is that true?""

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

Elaine placed another document on the table.

"Your Honor, we have reason to believe a private DNA test was conducted shortly before the marriage.""

The judge examined the document.

"Where is the original report?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"Daniel has it.""

"Where?""

"In the black box in his office.""

My father leaned forward.

"What else is in that box?""

Rebecca's voice dropped.

"Another DNA test.""

I stared at her.

"Another?""

She nodded.

"One he ordered six months ago.""

Daniel suddenly stood again.

"THIS IS ENOUGH!""

The judge called for order.

But Rebecca wasn't finished.

She looked at me with tears running down her cheeks.

"Sarah, the second test proved something Daniel never expected.""

I could barely speak.

"What?""

Rebecca took a breath.

"Lily is his biological daughter.""

I stared at her.

Daniel's face turned white.

Rebecca continued.

"But the first test said she wasn't. And he used that original result to convince his mother that he had a reason to take Lily away from you.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Why would he do that?""

Rebecca looked toward Margaret.

"Because Margaret promised him the family inheritance if he could prove Lily wasn't his responsibility.""

Margaret stood abruptly.

"That's ridiculous!""

But the judge raised a hand.

"Mrs. Mitchell, remain seated.""

Elaine turned toward Rebecca.

"Do you know why Daniel ordered the second test?""

Rebecca nodded.

"Because he discovered something about the first one.""

"What?""

Rebecca looked directly at Daniel.

"He had deliberately switched the samples.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then my father stood.

"Your Honor, we need to know whose DNA was substituted.""

Rebecca looked at me.

And her next words changed everything.

"The first test wasn't actually Daniel's DNA against Lily's.""

She pointed toward Margaret.

"It was Margaret's.""

The judge stared at her.

"Are you alleging that Mr. Mitchell's mother was involved in the paternity deception?""

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes. And there's proof.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a laboratory receipt dated seven years earlier.

At the bottom was a handwritten instruction.

*DO NOT DISCLOSE THE SECOND SAMPLE TO SARAH.*

The signature belonged to Margaret Mitchell.

And beside it was a name I recognized.

The man Daniel had secretly claimed might be Lily's biological father.

My former fiancé.
