Chapter 4: The Hearing They Planned Behind My Back

The hearing was scheduled for nine the following morning.

I read the notice three times before the words finally made sense.

Someone had submitted a legal petition claiming I had voluntarily surrendered my parental rights. Someone had forged my signature, altered my daughter's birth certificate, and arranged for Vanessa Cole to become Lily's legal guardian.

And my sister was supposed to testify against me.

"How can they schedule something like this without my knowledge?"" I asked.

My father stood beside the kitchen table, examining the paperwork.

"They can't simply erase your parental rights because someone submits a document, Sarah. But we need to establish exactly what was filed and make sure the court knows these signatures are disputed.""

Officer Harris nodded.

"We'll document the alleged assault and preserve the evidence you've provided. You'll also need an attorney who handles family law and fraudulent custody filings.""

Daniel, who had been sitting silently on the sofa, suddenly laughed.

"You're wasting your time. The hearing is already arranged.""

I turned toward him.

"What does that mean?""

He shrugged.

"It means you should stop fighting something you don't understand.""

My father stepped forward.

"Explain yourself.""

Daniel leaned back.

"Rebecca knows everything. Vanessa knows everything. And Sarah signed those documents herself.""

"I never signed anything!""

"Then explain the signature.""

"YOU FORGED IT!""

Daniel stood abruptly.

"Watch your mouth!""

Officer Harris immediately instructed him to sit down.

Daniel reluctantly lowered himself onto the sofa.

I watched him and remembered how he used to bring me coffee in bed. How he'd kissed my forehead before leaving for work. How he'd held Lily during her first birthday party.

Had every tender moment been another performance?

My father took my hand.

"Sarah, we're leaving tonight. You and Lily are coming with me.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You can't take my daughter.""

My father looked directly at him.

"Watch me protect my granddaughter.""

After the officers completed their initial work, Dad helped me pack Lily's clothes, medication, school supplies, and favorite stuffed rabbit.

As I entered our bedroom, I noticed Daniel's closet door was open.

His expensive suits hung neatly on one side.

On the other side was an empty space where he'd kept a black leather briefcase.

I remembered Lily's description of the little black box.

I looked toward his office.

The door was locked.

"Dad?""

He appeared behind me.

"What is it?""

"Daniel has been keeping something in his office. Lily said it was a black box.""

Dad examined the door.

"Don't touch anything. Tell the officers.""

We did.

One of the officers photographed the office door and noted the location. They explained that any further search or seizure would need to follow the appropriate legal process.

While they worked, I checked my phone.

A message had arrived from Rebecca.

PLEASE DON'T GO TO THE HEARING TOMORROW. DANIEL HAS EVERYTHING PREPARED.

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

IF YOU GO, HE'LL MAKE SURE YOU NEVER SEE LILY AGAIN.

My fingers went cold.

I showed my father.

He read the messages without changing his expression.

"Save them.""

I took screenshots.

Then I typed one question.

WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?

The reply came almost immediately.

I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE.

I nearly threw my phone across the room.

My father sat beside me.

"Sarah, listen. People who betray you often try to convince you that they were forced. That doesn't mean they weren't responsible.""

I nodded.

But there was something I needed to know.

"Why would Rebecca agree to testify against me?""

Dad looked toward the stairs.

"Maybe she believes Daniel has something to hold over her.""

I remembered the $220,000.

"What could be worth that much?""

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

It was a number I didn't recognize.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Sarah Mitchell?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Elaine Porter. I'm an attorney representing a client who has information about your husband's financial activities.""

I glanced at my father.

"Who is your client?""

"Someone who has been working with Daniel Mitchell for approximately eight months.""

My stomach tightened.

"Vanessa?""

There was a pause.

"No, Mrs. Mitchell. Someone much closer to your family.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who?""

"Your younger sister.""

I closed my eyes.

"Rebecca?""

"Yes. She contacted my office this afternoon. She wants to provide evidence, but she is afraid Daniel will retaliate.""

I almost laughed.

"She's the reason I'm in this situation.""

"I understand. However, she has information that could change the entire custody proceeding.""

"What information?""

Elaine lowered her voice.

"She says the adoption application wasn't Daniel's final plan.""

I looked at Dad.

"What does that mean?""

"She believes Daniel intended to have you declared legally incapable of caring for your daughter, then use a second document to transfer control of your inherited property.""

I swallowed.

"Why?""

"Because the person financing the arrangement wasn't Vanessa.""

My father leaned closer.

"Then who was it?""

Elaine hesitated.

"Your husband's mother.""

The line went silent for a moment.

Then she added:

"Mrs. Mitchell, I strongly recommend that you attend tomorrow's hearing with independent legal representation. Your husband is expecting you to stay away.""

I ended the call.

Dad looked at me.

"Are you going?""

I looked upstairs.

Lily was sitting on the bed, holding her stuffed rabbit.

She had already lost the feeling that her home was safe.

I wasn't going to let anyone take away her mother, too.

"Yes," I said.

"Then we'll be ready.""

But as Dad reached for his briefcase, my phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a photograph from an unknown number.

It showed Daniel standing outside a courthouse.

Beside him was Vanessa.

And between them stood a little girl wearing Lily's pink backpack.
