Chapter 6: The Trap Inside the Trust

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stood completely still.

The confident businessman.

The man who had spent years making everyone believe he controlled everything.

Suddenly looked like someone who had been caught inside his own trap.

I looked at Marcus.

“What did my father know?””

Marcus slowly removed another envelope.

“This.””

He placed it on the desk.

Daniel immediately moved forward.

“No.””

The word came out too quickly.

Everyone noticed.

Marcus looked at him.

“That reaction tells me everything.””

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Marcus didn’t blink.

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were pages of handwritten notes.

My father’s handwriting.

The handwriting I knew better than anything.

Emily,

If you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.

My hands started shaking.

I read the next line silently.

Do not trust Daniel Whitmore.

I stopped.

The room disappeared.

Even after everything.

Even after the evidence.

Seeing my father’s warning felt different.

Because this wasn’t Marcus.

This wasn’t a lawyer.

This was my father speaking directly to me.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

That was when I knew.

He had known about this letter.

“You saw this.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You knew my father wrote this.””

His silence was enough.

I turned back to the letter.

My father continued:

Daniel is intelligent. Charming. Patient. Those qualities make him dangerous when combined with greed.

My throat tightened.

Because that was exactly what Daniel had been.

Patient.

He didn’t destroy my life in one day.

He slowly changed it.

A comment here.

A doubt there.

A decision made without asking.

Until one day, I barely recognized myself.

Marcus spoke softly.

“Your father suspected Daniel was moving money from the company.””

I looked up.

“How much?””

Marcus hesitated.

“That’s what we’re still calculating.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“You’re making me look guilty because of assumptions.””

I turned toward him.

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Marcus placed another document on the desk.

“This is the transfer record.””

Daniel looked at it.

His expression changed.

Marcus continued.

“Money was moved through several accounts before ending up in a company controlled by Daniel.””

Patricia looked at her son.

“Daniel?””

He looked at her.

“Mom, don’t.””

That was when she realized.

She had spent years defending someone who had never told her the truth either.

Richard stepped forward.

“This is impossible.””

Marcus looked at him.

“No. It’s documented.””

The family members who once watched me like entertainment now looked uncomfortable.

They were seeing the person behind the image.

And Daniel hated it.

He grabbed the papers.

“This changes nothing.””

I stared at him.

“You hit me.””

His face froze.

“You humiliated me.””

I stepped closer.

“You threw me out of a house that belonged to my family.””

My voice remained calm.

“And now you’re standing here pretending you’re the victim.””

For a moment, I saw the old Daniel.

The charming man from the coffee shop.

The man who held my hand when I was nervous.

The man who promised he would never hurt me.

Then I remembered the same hands pushing me away.

The same voice telling me I was worthless without him.

I looked at Marcus.

“What happens now?””

Before Marcus could answer, Daniel laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“You think you’ve won?””

I turned toward him.

He walked slowly to the window.

“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””

My stomach tightened.

“What secret?””

Daniel looked outside at the estate grounds.

At the land my family had owned for generations.

Then he turned back.

“Your father didn’t leave this estate to protect you from me.””

He smiled.

“He left it because he knew you would need it when you discovered the truth about what really happened the night he died.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

Because everyone knew my father’s death was an accident.

At least, that was what I had been told.

I looked at Daniel.

“What are you saying?””

He walked toward me.

And whispered:

“Your father didn’t die because of an accident, Emily.””

May you like

A pause.

“He died because someone wanted him gone.””
