Chapter 5: The Husband I Never Knew

I stared at the document.

For several seconds, my brain refused to process the words.

Transfer ownership.

To Daniel.

Upon my marriage.

“No.””

The word escaped my lips before I could stop it.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The moment you realize you never knew your own family.””

His tone was cruel.

But underneath it, I heard something else.

Relief.

He wanted me confused.

He wanted me questioning everything.

Because confusion was where he had always been strongest.

I reached for the document.

Daniel pulled it away.

“You don’t get to see everything yet.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you’re finally going to listen.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

After everything.

After the slap.

After the lies.

He still thought he could control the conversation.

“You still think you’re in charge.””

His eyes narrowed.

“I am.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You’re not.””

The confidence on his face faded.

Just slightly.

“My father left this estate to me,” I continued.

“Not you.””

Daniel smiled.

“You’re still missing the point.””

“What point?””

He leaned closer.

“The point is that your father knew you were too emotional to handle responsibility.””

The words hurt.

Not because I believed him.

Because they sounded like something my father might have worried about.

My father always protected me.

But he also always saw me as his little girl.

Could he have made a decision like this?

Could he have secretly arranged everything?

I looked at the signature again.

It looked real.

Too real.

Daniel noticed my hesitation.

“There’s more.””

He opened another page.

“Your father signed this agreement because he knew the company needed someone strong.””

I looked up.

“And he chose you?””

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“He chose me.””

The room spun slightly.

For years, I thought Daniel entered my life by chance.

Now I wondered if I had been walking into a trap from the beginning.

“You planned everything.””

His silence was the answer.

But before I could speak, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped into the entrance hall.

Marcus Reed.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Serious.

And in his hand was a black briefcase.

Daniel immediately changed.

“Marcus.””

The attorney looked at him.

“Daniel.””

There was no respect between them.

Only history.

Marcus walked into the dining room.

“I told you I would find the truth eventually.””

Daniel’s face became cold.

“You’re trespassing.””

Marcus ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Emily, are you hurt?””

The question was simple.

But after everything that happened, hearing someone ask it almost broke me.

I shook my head.

“I’m fine.””

Marcus looked at my cheek.

He knew I wasn’t.

But he didn’t push.

Instead, he opened his briefcase.

“I found the original documents.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You have no authority here.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Actually, I do.””

He removed a sealed envelope.

“Your problem, Daniel, is that you always assumed nobody would look closely.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Marcus handed the envelope to me.

“The document you’re holding is a copy.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a different agreement.

Different wording.

Different signature.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then I stopped.

Because at the bottom was my father’s handwritten note.

A note that Daniel had never seen.

A note that explained everything.

*If Daniel Whitmore ever shows this document, it means he has already betrayed my daughter.*

I looked up slowly.

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“Your father knew.””

My fingers trembled.

“Knew what?””

Marcus looked directly at Daniel.

“He knew exactly what kind of man you married.””

Daniel took a step back.

“No.””

For the first time that night, he sounded powerless.

Marcus continued.

“And your father left one final instruction.””

I swallowed.

“What instruction?””

Marcus looked at the study door.

“The estate was never meant to protect Daniel.””

May you like

A pause.

“It was meant to protect you from him.””
