Chapter 12: The Face Behind the Betrayal
The chair scraped against the marble floor.
Slowly.
Everyone looked toward the person standing.
Richard Whitmore.
Daniel’s father.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand.
The quiet man who rarely spoke.
The man who always sat at the end of the table.
The man who pretended he stayed away from family conflicts.
He looked nothing like a mastermind.
And maybe that was the point.
Richard adjusted his jacket.
“Daniel.””
His son looked at him.
“Why?””
There was something strange in Daniel’s voice.
Not anger.
Pain.
Richard ignored him.
“Emily, you have always been more intelligent than people gave you credit for.””
I stared at him.
“Don’t compliment me.””
His expression changed slightly.
“Excuse me?””
“Don’t pretend this is admiration.””
I held up the letter.
“You spent years trying to control my life.””
Richard sighed.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
I stepped closer.
“But I understand one thing.””
I pointed at Daniel.
“You used him.””
Daniel looked at his father.
Richard said nothing.
And that silence told me everything.
Daniel laughed quietly.
“So it’s true.””
Richard looked at him.
“Son—”
“No.””
Daniel stepped back.
“You used me.””
The room became uncomfortable.
Because everyone expected Daniel to be the villain.
Nobody expected him to be betrayed too.
Richard’s expression remained cold.
“You were willing.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You told me I was building something.””
“You were.””
“You told me Emily would never find out.””
Richard looked away.
“She wasn’t supposed to.””
My heart dropped.
The words were casual.
Like my pain was just an inconvenience.
I walked toward him.
“What was I?””
Richard looked at me.
“A solution.””
The answer was so cold that for a moment I couldn’t speak.
“A solution?””
“Yes.””
He didn’t even hesitate.
“Your father built an empire that should have belonged to people who understood how to manage it.””
I laughed.
“You mean people like you.””
“People who could protect it.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“People who could steal it.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea how much was at stake.””
“I know exactly what was at stake.””
I looked around the room.
“My family.””
A silence followed.
Then Marcus stepped forward.
“Richard, this ends tonight.””
Richard smiled.
“You still think you have control.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard reached into his pocket.
And removed a small device.
My heart sank.
Another recording.
Another secret.
He pressed a button.
A voice filled the room.
My father’s voice.
But this time…
It wasn’t a warning.
It was a confession.
“I made a mistake.””
Everyone froze.
Richard smiled.
“Your father knew.””
The recording continued.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
I looked at Marcus.
At Margaret.
At Daniel.
At Richard.
And suddenly, I realized something terrifying.
My father had known he was surrounded by enemies.
But he had also known something else.
Someone had tried to warn him.
Someone had tried to save him.
The recording stopped.
Richard looked at me.
“You want the truth?””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
He smiled.
“Then ask your aunt what she did the night your father died.””
I turned.
Margaret’s face went pale.
“Emily…”
My heart raced.
Because everyone had secrets.
Everyone had lied.
But only one person had been there that night.
The night my father died.
May you like
I looked at Margaret.
“What did you do?””
