Chapter 15: The Truth I Was Born Into

I couldn’t speak.

My mother.

A woman I barely remembered.

A woman who died when I was young.

A woman I had spent my entire life grieving.

Now her name was connected to the one mystery that destroyed my family.

“No.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

“You don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to bring my mother into this after ten years of silence.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Your mother discovered something before your father did.””

“What?””

“She discovered that your grandfather had hidden part of the family fortune.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

Thomas looked at the documents.

“Your grandfather created a private trust.””

Marcus opened one of the files.

“Not connected to the company.””

I stared.

“Then what was it?””

Margaret answered quietly.

“For you.””

I looked down.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

She took a breath.

“Your father realized the family business attracted people who cared more about power than family.””

My eyes moved across the documents.

All these years.

All these secrets.

All because people wanted what belonged to me.

Margaret continued.

“Your mother found out Richard was trying to gain control of everything.””

“Then why didn’t she tell anyone?””

Her face changed.

“Because she trusted the wrong person.””

A terrible feeling formed in my chest.

“Who?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Daniel’s mother.””

Patricia.

The woman who laughed when I was humiliated.

The woman who watched her son hurt me.

Another piece fell into place.

Thomas spoke.

“Your mother tried to expose them.””

“And?””

Margaret looked away.

“She never got the chance.””

Silence.

My whole life had been built on missing pieces.

Now they were finally coming back.

But instead of bringing peace, they brought pain.

I looked at Daniel’s father.

At Daniel.

At everyone who had played a part.

Then I realized something.

The truth was not just about what they did.

It was about what I did next.

Marcus closed the folder.

“The evidence is enough.””

I looked at him.

“Enough for what?””

“To take back everything.””

I thought about the estate.

The company.

The money.

The name.

Things everyone had fought over.

Then I remembered the woman I was before tonight.

The woman who apologized when she was hurt.

The woman who stayed quiet to keep peace.

She was gone.

I looked at the documents one last time.

“My father spent his life protecting this.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He spent his life trying to protect me.””

Nobody spoke.

I stood.

And for the first time, I didn’t feel like someone’s daughter.

Someone’s wife.

Someone’s possession.

I felt like myself.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emily?””

I frowned.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father told me to call only when you had the truth.””

My heart raced.

“Who are you?””

The man breathed heavily.

“I was there the night your father died.””

I gripped the phone.

“What did you see?””

His voice dropped.

“I saw who pushed his car off that road.””

The room went silent.

Then he said:

“And Emily…”

A pause.

“The person who killed your father is standing much closer to you than you think.””

The call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Because suddenly, I understood.

May you like

The truth had not ended the nightmare.

It had only revealed how deep it went.
