Chapter 9: The Recording
The hidden staircase smelled like dust and old wood.
Detective Lewis went first.
My father stayed beside me as I carefully followed.
Every step sent pain through my legs.
But I kept going.
At the bottom was a narrow room.
No windows.
One wooden table.
One chair.
And an old cassette recorder.
My father's breathing stopped.
“That wasn't there when we searched the house.””
Detective Lewis inspected it.
“No obvious tampering.””
I stepped closer.
There was a cassette inside.
A handwritten label covered the front.
*For Emily.*
My hands trembled.
“Play it.””
Detective Lewis pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then my mother's voice.
“Emily, if you're hearing this, something has happened to me.””
I closed my eyes.
Dad covered his mouth.
Her voice continued.
“Do not trust Julian.””
My chest tightened.
The recording crackled.
“He will tell you he loves you. He may even believe it. But he was sent to get close to you.””
I looked at my father.
Julian had told me the opposite.
The recording continued.
“Richard Vale believes your inheritance belongs to him.””
A pause.
“He has been stealing from our family for years.””
Then came a sound in the background.
A door opening.
My mother's breathing changed.
“Someone is here.””
My father whispered, “Mom…”
The recording continued.
“Emily, listen carefully. The account isn't just money.””
I leaned closer.
“It contains evidence.””
My heart raced.
“Evidence of what?””
The tape crackled.
“Names. Dates. Payments. Every person Richard has bribed.””
Then a man's voice sounded faintly in the background.
“Where is the account?””
My mother's voice shook.
“I won't tell you.””
The man said something I couldn't make out.
Then Mom screamed.
The recording cut to static.
My father staggered backward.
“No.””
Detective Lewis rewound the tape.
“There's more.””
He pressed play again.
After several seconds of static, my mother's voice returned.
Quieter.
Closer.
“If you're hearing this, I survived.””
I stopped breathing.
My father whispered, “What?””
“I survived the fall.””
The tape continued.
“They told everyone I was dead.””
My knees nearly gave out.
Detective Lewis caught my shoulder.
My mother's voice trembled.
“Someone helped me escape. I don't know how long I can stay hidden.””
I started crying.
For seven years, I had mourned a woman who might have been alive.
The recording continued.
“Emily, I need you to understand why I stayed away.””
A pause.
“Because they were watching you.””
My father's face was wet with tears.
“I thought they killed her.””
Then Mom said something that changed everything.
“I didn't leave you because I wanted to.””
She took a shaky breath.
“I left because your father made a deal with Richard Vale.””
My father froze.
“No.””
The tape continued.
“He promised them access to the account in exchange for keeping Emily safe.””
My father shook his head violently.
“That's not true.””
“Your father believes he saved you. But he didn't know what they intended.””
I looked at Dad.
“Is this why you signed the amended death report?””
He couldn't answer.
Detective Lewis turned toward him.
“Mr. Carter?””
My father sank into the chair.
“I didn't know.””
His voice was broken.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
“Protecting who?”” I asked.
“My family.””
He covered his face.
“Richard told me if I cooperated, they'd leave you alone.””
I stared at him.
“You let me believe Mom was dead.””
“I was twenty-six,” he whispered.
“I was terrified.””
The recording clicked.
Then my mother's voice returned one final time.
“There is one person who knows where I am.””
I leaned toward the recorder.
“Who?””
The tape crackled.
“Margaret.””
My father looked up.
“But Margaret betrayed you.””
“She did.””
Mom's voice became faint.
“But she has spent eight years trying to fix her mistake.””
A long pause.
Then the final words.
“If Julian ever tells Emily the truth, believe him.””
The tape stopped.
Nobody moved.
Detective Lewis stared at the recorder.
My father looked at me.
Then my phone rang.
Julian.
I answered.
“Julian?””
His breathing was ragged.
“Emily…”
“Where is Margaret?””
“I found her.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
“She was alive when I got there.””
“When?””
“Tonight.””
“Where is she now?””
A terrible silence followed.
Then Julian whispered,
“She left me a message.””
“What did it say?””
His voice broke.
“She said she was going to find your mother.””
I gripped the phone.
“Julian, where are you?””
Another pause.
Then he said,
May you like
“Emily, your mother is alive.””
The line went dead.
