Chapter 13: The Truth in the Envelope

Richard's words hung in the corridor.

“I am your father.””

For one second, nobody moved.

Then my father—Thomas—stepped toward him.

“You're lying.””

Richard smiled.

“You always were terrible at accepting the truth.””

Detective Lewis kept his gun trained on Richard.

“Drop the weapon.””

Richard slowly lowered it.

“Emily deserves to know.””

I stared at the man I'd spent the last hour learning to hate.

“My mother would never have hidden that from me.””

“She did.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew what I was.””

My hands trembled around the envelope.

“Then why did she stay with you?””

“She didn't.””

Richard's smile vanished.

“She ran.””

I looked at Thomas.

“Dad?””

He couldn't meet my eyes.

That hurt more than Richard's confession.

I turned toward him.

“Tell me.””

Thomas swallowed.

“Your mother met Richard before she met me.””

Richard laughed.

“That's one way to put it.””

Thomas's face hardened.

“You manipulated her.””

“She loved me once.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“She feared you.””

Richard looked at me.

“Your mother had you when she was very young. She knew I was dangerous. She gave you to Thomas to raise.””

I shook my head.

“Why would she do that?””

“Because she believed he could protect you.””

Thomas finally looked at me.

“I promised her I would.””

“And you failed.””

Thomas flinched.

Richard's eyes moved to the envelope.

“Open it.””

Detective Lewis shook his head.

“Not here.””

Richard laughed.

“You think you're protecting her?””

“I am.””

“No,” Richard said.

“You're protecting the lie.””

A second police officer entered the corridor.

“Detective, we have the building secured.””

Lewis nodded.

“Take Vale.””

Richard was handcuffed.

As they led him away, he stopped beside me.

“You think Julian is your savior?””

I said nothing.

“He lied too.””

“I know.””

Richard smiled.

“He never told you who Noah's father is.””

Then he was gone.

I turned toward Julian.

He looked exhausted.

“Tell me.””

He stared at the floor.

“Not here.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Emily—”

“Who is Noah's father?””

He closed his eyes.

“You already know the answer.””

“No.””

I held up the DNA report.

“It says you're not his father.””

Julian nodded.

“I'm not.””

“Then who?””

He looked at Thomas.

Thomas whispered, “Emily…”

Julian spoke first.

“Your mother never told me his name.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She knew Noah's father wasn't me. She knew before you did. But she never told me who it was.””

“Then why did you stay?””

Julian looked at me.

“Because Noah was my son in every way that mattered.””

The words should have made me angry.

Instead, they broke something open inside me.

I remembered Julian teaching Noah to ride a bicycle.

Holding him during thunderstorms.

Sitting beside his bed when he had pneumonia.

Those memories were real.

The lies were real too.

Both could exist.

I looked down at the envelope.

“I'm opening it.””

Detective Lewis nodded.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My mother's handwriting.

My dearest Emily,

My vision blurred.

If you've reached this letter, Richard has finally told you the truth—but he may have told it in the cruelest way possible.

I swallowed.

Thomas moved closer.

I kept reading.

Yes, Richard is your biological father.

My breath caught.

But biology is not the same as family.

I looked at Thomas.

He was crying silently.

Thomas raised you because Richard wanted nothing to do with the responsibility of being your father. He wanted control of the money, not a child.

I turned the page.

When I discovered what Richard was doing, I took you and ran. Thomas helped me. He became your father because he chose you.

My hands shook.

Then I read the sentence that made everything else disappear.

Emily, I need you to know that Thomas never sold you to Richard.

I looked up.

Richard had lied.

Thomas had not made a deal to give me away.

He had made a deal to keep me alive.

The letter continued.

He signed the death documents because Richard threatened to kill him and you.

My father covered his face.

“I should have told you.””

I stepped toward him.

“You should have.””

“I was afraid.””

“So was Mom.””

“Yes.””

I held the letter against my chest.

Then I saw the final paragraph.

There is one more truth. Noah's biological father is not a stranger.

I stopped breathing.

He is the son of the man I trusted most after Thomas.

I looked at Julian.

He stared back.

“What does that mean?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

But then I noticed something written beneath the final line.

A name.

One I had never heard before.

*Daniel Carter.*

Thomas went pale.

“Emily…”

“Who is Daniel Carter?””

He didn't answer.

Julian did.

“Your mother's brother.””

I stared at him.

“My uncle?””

Julian shook his head.

“Your mother's brother died twenty years ago.””

Then Detective Lewis picked up the letter.

He read the final handwritten note.

His face changed.

“Emily.””

“What?””

He pointed to the ink.

“This was written recently.””

My blood went cold.

The date at the bottom was only three days old.

My mother hadn't written this eight years ago.

She had written it three days ago.

May you like

Which meant she had been watching me.

And she knew exactly what Julian had done.
