Chapter 11: The Safety Deposit Box
The bank had closed hours ago.
But Detective Lewis had a warrant within minutes.
We entered through a side door while rain hammered the pavement outside.
My father walked beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
At the vault entrance, a bank manager waited nervously.
“Which box?””
Margaret had given us the number.
312.
The manager checked the records.
His face changed.
“This box hasn't been accessed in eight years.””
“Who owns it?”” Detective Lewis asked.
“Elizabeth Carter.””
My mother.
My hands shook.
The manager led us into the vault.
He inserted his key.
I inserted the brass key Margaret had given me.
The lock clicked.
The metal door opened.
Inside was a single black case.
My father whispered, “That's hers.””
I opened it.
There were dozens of photographs.
Bank records.
Letters.
A small digital recorder.
And a folder marked:
*RICHARD VALE — ORIGINALS*
Detective Lewis began photographing everything.
I picked up the first document.
A list of payments.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Some names belonged to local officials.
One belonged to a police officer.
Another belonged to a judge.
My stomach twisted.
“This goes deeper than Richard.””
Detective Lewis nodded.
“Much deeper.””
Then I found a photograph.
My mother was standing beside Richard Vale.
But someone else was in the background.
Julian.
I stared at him.
The photograph had been taken before I met him.
Again.
Always before me.
I turned it over.
A date.
And one sentence in my mother's handwriting.
Julian is not his son.
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
My father took the photograph.
“Who isn't his son?””
I looked at him.
“Julian.””
Detective Lewis leaned over.
“What does that mean?””
“I don't know.””
Then I saw another photograph.
Richard Vale holding a baby.
The baby was Julian.
Beside him stood a woman.
Julian's mother.
My father sat down heavily.
“What are you finding?””
I handed him the photograph.
His eyes widened.
“Richard had an affair with her.””
Margaret nodded from the doorway.
“That's why Julian worked for him.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Richard threatened to kill you.””
“You all keep saying that.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone was protecting me by lying to me.””
Nobody answered.
I opened the digital recorder.
A single file.
Dated eight years ago.
I pressed play.
Richard's voice filled the vault.
“You think hiding the account will save her?””
My mother's voice answered.
“She has nothing to do with you.””
“She has everything to do with me.””
“You won't touch my daughter.””
“You married a fool, Elizabeth.””
My mother's breathing was unsteady.
“Where is the money?””
“Gone.””
“You can't hide it forever.””
“I don't need to.””
A chair scraped.
Then Richard said:
“Julian will marry her.””
My father's eyes closed.
My mother's voice shook.
“No.””
“He'll make her trust him.””
“He won't.””
“He already does.””
Silence.
Then Richard said something that made my blood run cold.
“And when she has a child, we'll have another way to control her.””
I stopped the recording.
Noah.
My son.
I couldn't breathe.
My father whispered, “Oh God.””
Detective Lewis looked at me.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, there has to be more.””
I searched the case.
Underneath the recorder was another envelope.
My name.
I opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Noah's.
But something was wrong.
The father's name wasn't Julian Mercer.
It was blank.
I stared at it.
“My son's birth certificate…”
My father took it.
“Why is the father's name empty?””
Margaret stepped closer.
“Because your mother told Julian never to sign it.””
“Why?””
Margaret's voice dropped.
“Because she knew he wasn't Noah's biological father.””
The room went silent.
My heart hammered.
“What?””
Margaret looked at me.
“Emily, your mother knew before you did.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She tested the blood.””
“Whose?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Yours.””
My hands went numb.
“My mother tested my blood?””
“She was trying to protect you.””
Detective Lewis picked up the envelope.
“There may be another document.””
He pulled out a laboratory report.
I read the first line.
*Maternal relationship confirmed.*
Then the second.
*Paternal relationship excluded: Julian Mercer.*
I couldn't speak.
My father stared at the report.
“Then who is Noah's father?””
Before anyone could answer, the vault lights went out.
Darkness swallowed us.
A gunshot cracked through the bank.
Margaret screamed.
Detective Lewis shouted, “DOWN!””
I dropped behind the metal cabinet.
Another shot.
Then footsteps.
Someone was running toward the vault.
My father grabbed my hand.
“Emily!””
I heard a man's voice from the corridor.
“Give me the box!””
Detective Lewis raised his weapon.
“Police! Stop!””
The footsteps stopped.
Then the man spoke.
And I recognized his voice.
May you like
It was Julian.
“Emily, don't let them open the last envelope.””
