Chapter 5: The Room Behind The Locked Door

The next morning, I returned home with Detective Hayes and two officers.

I didn’t want to go back.

Every corner of that house felt different now.

The kitchen where Lily had been hurt.

The table where Daniel had stood.

The place where I realized the person beside me was someone I didn’t know.

Detective Hayes noticed me staring.

“Are you okay?””

I nodded.

But it was a lie.

Because the hardest part wasn’t seeing the room.

It was remembering all the normal moments that happened there.

Birthday dinners.

Movie nights.

Breakfast before school.

A house could hold memories.

And it could hold secrets.

The officers began searching.

Daniel and Margaret were not allowed inside while the investigation continued.

For the first time in years, the house was quiet.

Then one officer called out.

“Detective?””

Everyone turned.

He was standing near the upstairs hallway.

“There’s something here.””

We followed him.

He was looking at the door at the end of the hallway.

A door I had always thought was a storage closet.

Except it was locked.

I frowned.

“That’s strange.””

Detective Hayes looked at me.

“You don’t have the key?””

I shook my head.

“I thought Daniel kept old files there.””

The officer opened the lock.

Inside wasn’t storage.

It was organized.

Too organized.

There were folders.

Notebooks.

Printed documents.

I felt my breathing change.

Detective Hayes picked up the first folder.

The label made my heart stop.

*LILY — BEHAVIOR RECORDS*

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

She opened it.

Inside were pages of notes.

Dates.

Times.

Descriptions.

My daughter’s behavior.

Every mistake.

Every emotional reaction.

Every time she cried.

Every time she argued.

It wasn’t parenting.

It was surveillance.

“He was documenting her,” I whispered.

Detective Hayes looked through the pages.

“Looks like it.””

I picked up a notebook.

The handwriting belonged to Margaret.

The first page said:

*Steps to correct Emily’s influence on Lily.*

My hands shook.

“Emily’s influence?””

Detective Hayes read silently.

Then she looked at me.

“Keep going.””

I turned the page.

The words became worse.

Margaret had written that I was making Lily “weak.””

That I encouraged disobedience.

That I needed to be removed from decision-making.

My throat tightened.

“They wanted to remove me.””

Detective Hayes nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked around the room.

The hidden room.

The secret files.

The locked door.

“How long?””

The detective checked the documents.

“Almost a year.””

A year.

For a year, they had been planning.

And I had been making dinner.

Helping with homework.

Tucking my daughter into bed.

Thinking we were a family.

Then an officer found another item.

A small envelope.

“Detective, you need to see this.””

Inside was a letter.

Not sent.

Not finished.

But addressed to someone.

I looked at the name.

My heart stopped.

*To the court.*

Detective Hayes read the first lines.

“Your Honor, I am requesting emergency custody because my wife has become emotionally unstable and has created an unsafe environment for our daughter.””

I almost laughed.

Unsafe.

The word felt impossible.

I looked at the kitchen downstairs.

At the place where my daughter had almost died.

Then the detective found the final page.

And this time, even she looked shocked.

May you like

Because Daniel hadn’t only planned to take Lily away from me.

He had already chosen where he wanted to send her.
