Chapter 14: The Last Person On Their Side

The investigation expanded quickly.

For the first time, the people who had controlled everything were losing control.

Daniel’s attorney withdrew from the case.

Dr. Lawson stopped answering calls.

Margaret disappeared from public view.

And Rachel kept calling me.

I didn’t ignore her.

But I didn’t forgive her either.

Forgiveness was something earned.

Not something someone demanded because they finally felt guilty.

A week later, Detective Hayes asked me to come to the station.

“We found the connection.””

I sat down.

“Between who?””

She placed a file on the table.

“Margaret, Daniel, Dr. Lawson.””

I waited.

“And one more person.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

She turned the file around.

I saw the name.

Judge’s assistant.

A court employee.

Someone who had access to scheduling.

Documents.

Information.

I stared at the page.

“They had someone inside.””

Detective Hayes nodded.

“They were trying to influence the process before the hearing.””

“Can they do that?””

“Not legally.””

Her answer was simple.

But the fact that they tried was enough.

I looked at the evidence.

The fake records.

The false statements.

The secret payments.

Everything connected.

“They thought they had already won.””

“Yes.””

That was the most terrifying part.

They had built an entire world where they were right.

Where hurting Lily was justified.

Where destroying me was acceptable.

That evening, I visited Lily.

She was drawing again.

This time, she drew our family.

I noticed something.

She added Daniel.

But he was far away from the house.

I sat beside her.

“Why did you put Daddy there?””

She shrugged.

“Because he’s still my daddy.””

My heart broke.

Children didn’t think like adults.

They didn’t divide people into good and bad.

They just loved.

Even when they were hurt.

“Do you miss him?””

She was quiet.

“Sometimes.””

I nodded.

“That’s okay.””

She looked at me.

“Am I allowed to miss someone who scared me?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

That was the moment I realized something.

Lily wasn’t only healing from what happened.

She was trying to understand it.

The next morning, Detective Hayes called.

“We arrested the court employee.””

I listened carefully.

“What did they say?””

“They admitted they shared information.””

“With Daniel?””

“With Margaret.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Margaret.

She had been the center of everything.

“Where is she now?””

Detective Hayes paused.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“She left town.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She ran?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Detective Hayes lowered her voice.

“Because we found something on her computer.””

I waited.

“A document.””

“What document?””

“A confession.””

My heart started beating faster.

“A confession?””

“Yes.””

Detective Hayes continued.

“But it wasn’t written after the incident.””

I frowned.

“When was it written?””

A pause.

Then:

“Before.””

I sat frozen.

Before Lily was hurt.

Before the police arrived.

Before anyone knew.

“She planned to confess?””

“No.””

Detective Hayes sounded serious.

“She planned to use it.””

“To do what?””

Her answer came quietly.

“She wrote it as insurance.””

I felt a chill.

“Insurance against what?””

Detective Hayes sent me the file.

I opened it.

The title was simple.

*If Daniel fails.*

I read the first sentence.

And my hands started shaking.

May you like

Because Margaret had written:

*If my son cannot complete the plan, I will handle Emily myself.*
