Chapter 4: The Plan They Hid From Me

The first thing I did after reading Daniel’s message was look at my daughter.

Not at the evidence.

Not at the detective.

Not at the man who had once promised me he would protect our family.

I looked at Lily.

Because suddenly every strange moment from the past year came rushing back.

The questions Daniel had asked her.

The things he had said when he thought I wasn’t listening.

The way Margaret always found a reason to criticize my parenting.

I had spent years wondering if I was being too sensitive.

Now I knew.

I wasn’t imagining it.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Detective Hayes’ voice pulled me back.

I wiped my face.

“What does ‘take Lily away’ mean?””

She folded her hands.

“We’re investigating that. But we found more than just that message.””

She opened another file.

Inside were copies of emails.

Emails between Daniel and a family law attorney.

My hands went cold.

“He was preparing something.””

Detective Hayes nodded.

“Three weeks before the incident, your husband contacted an attorney about custody.””

I stared at the papers.

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

I felt like the room had become smaller.

“He was planning to leave?””

“Not exactly.””

She pushed one document toward me.

I read the title.

*Emergency Custody Petition Preparation.*

My stomach dropped.

“He was going to claim I was unstable?””

Detective Hayes didn’t answer directly.

She didn’t need to.

The words were already there.

Concerns about my emotional reactions.

Concerns about my ability to make decisions.

Claims that I was “overprotective.””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“Overprotective?””

My daughter had almost died.

And he was preparing to use my fear for her safety against me.

“He wanted the court to believe I was the problem.””

Detective Hayes nodded.

“That appears to be the direction he was taking.””

I looked through more pages.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A photograph.

It was Lily standing outside her school.

Someone had taken it from a distance.

“Where did you get this?””

Detective Hayes looked serious.

“From Daniel’s phone.””

I stared at the image.

“When was this taken?””

“Five days before the incident.””

I felt a wave of nausea.

“Why was he photographing her?””

“We’re still investigating.””

I looked at Lily’s sleeping face.

The answer didn’t matter.

The fact that he had been collecting things about her already told me enough.

That evening, when Lily was awake, I sat beside her bed.

She was drawing with crayons from the hospital playroom.

A picture of our house.

Me.

Her.

And a small rabbit.

There was one person missing.

I gently asked, “Where’s Daddy?””

She stopped drawing.

Then she quietly erased a corner of the page.

“He said he might not live with us anymore.””

I froze.

“When did he say that?””

She shrugged.

“A while ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Daddy said you would get upset.””

I held her hand.

“Sweetheart, you can always tell me anything.””

She looked at me.

“Even if Daddy says not to?””

The question shattered me.

“Yes.””

I pulled her into my arms carefully.

“Especially then.””

Later that night, Detective Hayes called.

“Mrs. Carter, we found something else.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“Your mother-in-law visited the house before the incident.””

“She did?””

“Yes. The day before.””

I remembered that day.

Margaret had said she only stopped by to bring groceries.

She had hugged Lily.

She had smiled.

She had acted like everything was normal.

“What did she do?””

Detective Hayes paused.

“She spent twenty minutes in the kitchen.””

My heart started racing.

“Why?””

“We don’t know yet.””

Then she said something that made me sit completely still.

“But the security footage shows she wasn’t just putting groceries away.””

“What was she doing?””

A long silence.

Then Detective Hayes answered.

“She was looking for something.””
