Chapter 11: The File With My Name

Detective Hayes arrived at my apartment less than an hour after I told her about the file.

She listened carefully.

Then she said something I didn’t expect.

“We need to find that file.””

“Why?””

“Because if Margaret created false information about you, it could explain how she convinced other people.””

I thought about Rachel.

My sister.

The person who had believed them.

Or almost believed them.

“What if it’s real?””

Detective Hayes looked at me.

“Then we examine the evidence.””

Her answer was calm.

Professional.

But it still scared me.

Because for the first time, I wondered what Margaret had been collecting.

What story had she created about me?

We searched the house again.

This time, we focused on the hidden room.

The room where they had stored their plans.

The officer removed boxes from the shelves.

Old papers.

Receipts.

Notes.

Then Detective Hayes found a locked metal container.

“This wasn’t here before.””

I stared at it.

“Can you open it?””

The officer unlocked it.

Inside were folders.

Photos.

Printouts.

And at the very top was my name.

*EMILY CARTER*

I felt dizzy.

Detective Hayes opened the folder.

The first page was a timeline.

My life.

But not my life as I remembered it.

A twisted version.

Arguments were exaggerated.

Normal disagreements became “incidents.””

Moments where I cried became “emotional instability.””

I picked up a page.

It described the day Lily was born.

*Emily displayed excessive attachment and anxiety.*

I almost dropped it.

“Excessive attachment?””

Detective Hayes looked at me.

“They were building a pattern.””

I flipped through more pages.

Then I saw something that made me stop.

A medical record.

My medical record.

But the information was wrong.

Completely wrong.

“They changed this.””

Detective Hayes examined it.

“We’ll verify everything.””

I looked at the pages.

They had been preparing this for months.

Maybe longer.

Not just custody.

A complete destruction of my reputation.

Then the officer found another envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Not of Lily.

Of me.

Walking.

Shopping.

Leaving work.

Sitting in my car.

Someone had been following me.

My voice shook.

“How long?””

Detective Hayes looked at the dates.

“Almost eight months.””

I felt sick.

Eight months.

Someone had been watching me.

Recording my life.

Waiting for moments they could twist.

Then Detective Hayes found the final document.

She read it silently.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

It was an agreement.

A private agreement between Daniel and Margaret.

My eyes moved across the page.

The first section was about custody.

The second was about finances.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And I understood why Margaret was so confident.

Because she wasn’t planning to simply take Lily.

She was planning to make sure I could never fight back.

The final sentence said:

*Once Emily is declared unfit, control of the trust will transfer under appointed guardianship.*

I looked up.

“They weren’t just taking Lily.””

Detective Hayes nodded.

“No.””

“They were taking everything.””

Before I could say anything else, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

Quiet.

Shaking.

“Emily?””

I recognized it immediately.

Rachel.

“Where are you?””

“I need to tell you the truth.””

I stood.

“What truth?””

She took a deep breath.

Then whispered:

“I know who helped Margaret create the file.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

May you like

Then she said:

“It was someone you trusted before Daniel.””
