Chapter 9: My Brother Declared Me Missing
I stared at the security monitor.
“Missing?””
Melissa moved closer to the screen.
“Did she say Nathan reported you missing?””
“Yes.””
Ethan looked as though someone had pulled the floor from beneath him.
Margaret clutched the back of a chair.
Chloe whispered, “Oh, my God.””
I pressed the intercom.
“This is Claire Whitmore. Please come in.””
The front door opened, and Special Agent Laura Mitchell entered with another investigator. She was in her early forties, with dark hair pulled into a tight bun and an expression that suggested she had learned not to trust anyone's first explanation.
“Ms. Whitmore,” she said, showing her credentials.
“Thank you for agreeing to speak with us.””
“I'm happy to cooperate. But I'd like to understand why my brother reported me missing.””
Agent Mitchell exchanged a glance with her colleague.
“Mr. Sterling contacted local authorities early this morning. He stated that you had failed to appear at a scheduled meeting, that your executive assistant couldn't reach you, and that he feared you might have been abducted or coerced.””
I stared at her.
“I attended a board meeting this morning.””
“We know. We've verified your location.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because the report wasn't the only thing he submitted.””
She opened her briefcase and removed a document.
“Mr. Sterling also provided evidence suggesting that someone had used your identity to authorize the transfer of controlling corporate assets. He claims he suspects you may have been manipulated by an employee with access to your private office.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Daniel.””
“His name appears in the report, yes.””
Ethan shifted uncomfortably.
Agent Mitchell noticed.
“Mr. Whitmore, are you aware of any financial transactions involving Sterling Crest Group?””
“I was told about a property loan, but I didn't authorize it.””
“Were you involved in discussions concerning a four-million-dollar loan secured against this residence?””
Ethan looked at me.
I said nothing.
“Yes,” he admitted.
“I was told a loan was being arranged, but I believed the transaction was legitimate.””
“Who told you?””
“My brother-in-law, Nathan Sterling.””
“Did you know Ms. Whitmore's signature had been disputed?””
“I know now.””
Agent Mitchell made a note.
“Did you benefit financially from the transaction?””
“No money was transferred to me.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Ethan's shoulders sagged.
“I expected to receive money from a commercial development deal.””
“How much?””
“Approximately two million dollars.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
Agent Mitchell continued.
“And what was the purpose of that payment?””
“To repay a private loan.””
“From whom?””
“Nathan.””
The agent looked up.
“So your brother-in-law lent you money, then helped arrange a loan secured against a property owned by your wife's company, with funds potentially intended to repay your debt to him?””
Ethan swallowed.
“When you put it that way, it sounds bad.””
“It sounds like a sequence of events we need to investigate.””
Chloe sat down abruptly.
Agent Mitchell turned toward her.
“Ms. Bennett, we've received information indicating that you signed a witness declaration related to the property loan. Is that correct?””
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Did you witness Claire Whitmore authorize the transaction?””
“No.””
“Why did you sign?””
“My father told me the paperwork was legitimate.””
“Did you know the statement was false?””
Chloe hesitated.
“I knew I hadn't seen her sign.””
The agent's expression hardened.
“That's an important distinction, but it doesn't remove your responsibility for signing a statement you knew you couldn't verify. You'll need to discuss that with your attorney.””
Chloe nodded miserably.
I felt no satisfaction watching her unravel. She had helped deceive me, but she was now facing the consequences of her own choices.
Agent Mitchell turned back to me.
“Ms. Whitmore, we need to ask about your relationship with Daniel Brooks.””
I stiffened.
“What about it?””
“Your brother claims Mr. Brooks has been using his access to corporate systems to divert funds and forge your authorization.””
“Daniel is under investigation. I've suspended his access and preserved the relevant records.””
“Did you know his credentials were used to create the loan application?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know his security token had previously been reported missing?””
“I learned that this morning.””
“Did he tell you that himself?””
“Yes.””
The agent studied me.
“You trust him?””
I considered the question carefully.
“I trust the evidence more than I trust anyone's promises.””
She gave a small nod.
“That's a sensible position.””
Her colleague approached with a tablet.
“Agent Mitchell, we've received the response from the financial institution.””
She took the tablet and read the screen.
Her expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
“The lender has identified a second application connected to the same borrower.””
My stomach tightened.
“Another loan?””
“Yes. This one was submitted against a commercial property owned by Sterling Crest Group.””
“How much?””
“Six million dollars.””
The room seemed to shrink around me.
“When was it submitted?””
“Five weeks ago.””
I closed my eyes briefly.
Five weeks ago, I'd been in New York finalizing an acquisition. Nathan had been responsible for managing several routine corporate transactions while I was away.
He'd had access to the records, the directors, and the people who trusted him.
“Was the application approved?”” I asked.
“The funds were partially disbursed. Approximately $1.2 million has already been released to an intermediary company.””
Agent Mitchell turned the tablet toward me.
The company name appeared beneath the transaction summary.
Bennett Meridian Holdings.
Chloe covered her mouth.
“My father,” she whispered.
Agent Mitchell nodded.
“We're tracing the funds. But there's a more immediate concern.””
She brought up a second document.
The six-million-dollar application contained the same forged signature as the mansion loan. It also included an authorization certificate claiming that the board had approved the use of the commercial property as collateral.
I scanned the document.
The signature at the bottom belonged to me.
The witness signature belonged to Robert Hale.
And the final authorization was attributed to the board secretary.
Patricia Shaw.
I looked at Melissa.
“Patricia wouldn't sign this.””
Agent Mitchell's expression remained neutral.
“We haven't established who signed the document or whether the signature is genuine. That's why we're here.””
I took a breath.
“Patricia is our general counsel. She was at the board meeting this morning. She'll cooperate with the investigation.””
“Good. We'll need the original corporate records.””
Agent Mitchell closed the folder.
“There's one more reason we came here. Your brother claims that you and Mr. Brooks have been coordinating a private transfer of company assets without board approval.””
“That is a lie.””
“He supplied a series of emails that appear to support his allegation.””
I stared at her.
“Emails from whom?””
“Your account and Mr. Brooks's.””
My blood ran cold.
I had never sent Daniel an email authorizing a secret transfer.
“Can I see them?””
Agent Mitchell handed me the tablet.
The messages were brief, professional, and convincing.
One instructed Daniel to prepare a confidential ownership transfer.
Another referred to a payment schedule.
A third stated that the transaction should be completed before the next board meeting.
But the wording felt wrong.
I had never called Sterling Crest's controlling shares “the asset package.”” I'd never referred to my father as “the former principal.”” And I would never authorize a transfer without identifying the receiving party.
“Those messages are forged,” I said.
“Can you prove that?””
“Not yet. But our forensic team can compare the headers, device records, and authentication logs.””
Agent Mitchell nodded.
“We'll need copies of your original mailbox records.””
I returned the tablet.
“Take whatever you need through the proper process.””
She watched me for a moment.
“Ms. Whitmore, I want to be clear. You aren't being accused of a crime at this stage. But someone is constructing a paper trail that makes it appear you authorized these transactions.””
“And my brother is presenting that paper trail as evidence against me.””
“Yes.””
I looked toward the windows.
The rain had stopped, but the sky remained dark.
Nathan had reported me missing, implicated Daniel, and produced emails that made me look like the architect of a corporate theft.
He wasn't merely trying to steal my company anymore.
He was trying to make me look like the criminal.
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call from Patricia.
I answered immediately.
“Patricia, where are you?””
“Claire, listen carefully. The forensic team has recovered the original version of the six-million-dollar loan application.””
“Who signed it?””
“That's not the problem. The original file contains a hidden attachment that wasn't included in the copy Nathan submitted to the bank.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What attachment?””
“A board resolution authorizing the transfer of your controlling shares.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“That's impossible. The board never approved it.””
“I know. The resolution is dated six weeks ago, but the meeting it references never took place.””
“Who signed it?””
Patricia paused.
“Four directors. Nathan Sterling. Robert Hale. And you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Patricia, I never signed that resolution.””
“I believe you. But there's a second signature on the document that appears to confirm your identity.””
“Whose?””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Your father's.””
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
“My father has been dead for six years.””
“I know.””
“Then how could his signature be on a resolution dated six weeks ago?””
“I don't know yet. But the document contains a digital verification certificate linked to an account that was closed after his death.””
I stared at the phone.
Someone had resurrected my father's identity to take control of his company.
And if the certificate was authentic enough to fool the bank, the board, and the financial institutions involved, the damage could extend far beyond the mansion.
“Patricia,” I whispered, “who had access to that account after Dad died?””
She answered immediately.
“Only two people. You and Nathan.””
Before I could respond, Agent Mitchell's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds, then looked directly at me.
“Ms. Whitmore, we need you to come with us.””
My heart lurched.
“Am I under arrest?””
“No. But the bank has just reported a new transaction.””
“What transaction?””
Agent Mitchell slipped her phone into her pocket.
“Someone has initiated a transfer of your controlling shares to an offshore holding company.””
I stood frozen.
“Who authorized it?””
She held my gaze.
“The request came from your personal account less than ten minutes ago.””
And as I looked down at my own phone, a notification appeared confirming that I'd just approved a transfer I had never seen.
The amount was listed as one dollar.

The description contained only five words.
*Final transfer. Ownership fully surrendered.*
