Chapter 8: The Mistress Who Knew Too Much
At six that evening, I returned to the mansion with two attorneys and a property manager.
I hadn't intended to go back so soon, but the message about Chloe had unsettled me. If she knew something about the financial scheme, I needed to hear it before Nathan had a chance to contact her.
The driveway was empty except for Ethan's black SUV.
The front door opened before I reached the steps.
Margaret stood there wearing a tailored beige dress, her hair freshly styled.
She looked as though she were preparing to host a dinner party rather than defend herself in a property dispute.
“Claire,” she said, forcing a smile.
“I assume you've come to discuss a peaceful arrangement.””
“I've come to inspect my property.””
“Ethan is resting.””
“That's unfortunate.””
I stepped past her.
She hurried after me.
“You can't simply walk in and start ordering people around.””
I stopped beside the staircase.
“Margaret, this property is owned by a company I control. Your permission isn't required for an inspection.””
Her lips pressed together.
“You're enjoying this.””
“No. I'm trying to understand why you witnessed a loan application bearing a forged signature.””
She went pale.
“I already explained that Ethan told me it was renovation paperwork.””
“And yet you signed a declaration stating that you witnessed me authorize a multimillion-dollar loan.””
“I didn't know the amount.””
“Did you see me sign it?””
She stared at the floor.
“No.””
“Then why did you sign?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Ethan said it was necessary. He told me the paperwork would protect his business and that you had agreed to everything.””
“And you believed him?””
“He's my son.””
I let the silence stretch.
“That doesn't make his lies your responsibility to repeat.””
Margaret sank onto the nearest chair.
For the first time, she looked older than I remembered.
“I thought I was helping him save his future,” she whispered.
“By helping him take mine?””
She covered her face.
I didn't comfort her.
There were limits to what I could forgive simply because someone regretted being caught.
My attorney, Melissa Grant, approached with the property manager.
“We need to document the current condition of the residence and establish who is occupying it,” Melissa explained.
“We'll also inventory any company-owned property and preserve relevant records.””
Margaret stood abruptly.
“You're not taking anything out of this house!””
“We aren't removing personal belongings,” Melissa replied.
“We're documenting the premises.””
At that moment, Chloe appeared at the top of the stairs.
She wore an oversized sweatshirt and held a glass of water in one hand. Her face looked pale, and her eyes moved nervously between us.
“What's happening?””
“An inspection,” I answered.
She descended slowly.
“Does that mean Ethan and I have to leave?””
“That depends on the legal review and the terms of the occupancy agreement. Nobody is removing you tonight.””
She seemed relieved.
Then she noticed the attorneys.
“Can I speak to Claire alone?””
Ethan emerged from the hallway.
“Absolutely not.””
Chloe turned toward him.
“I'm trying to explain what happened.””
“You've explained enough.””
“No, Ethan. You told me your business was legitimate. You told me Claire knew about the property paperwork. You told me my father was helping us start a new life.””
“And he was!””
“Then why did he tell me to keep quiet when I asked about the loan?””
Ethan grabbed her arm.
“Stop talking.””
I stepped forward.
“Let her go.””
He released her immediately.
Chloe rubbed her wrist, staring at him with an expression that mixed fear and disbelief.
“I didn't know he was like this,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Then tell me what you do know.””
Ethan moved toward the living room.
“Claire, this is between Chloe and me.””
“No. Your relationship is between the two of you. The money is between my company and the people who handled its accounts.””
Chloe took a deep breath.
“My father told me that Ethan was going to receive a large investment payment. He said the money would be enough to clear Ethan's debts and buy us a house.””
“What did your father ask you to do?””
“Nothing at first.””
“And later?””
She looked toward Ethan.
“He asked me to attend a meeting here last week.””
“Who was there?””
“Ethan, my father, Nathan, and Mr. Hale.””
“Margaret?””
Chloe nodded.
“She came in near the end.””
Margaret made a small, distressed sound.
I kept my eyes on Chloe.
“What did they discuss?””
“Mostly paperwork. My father said the money was delayed because the company had to verify the property collateral.””
“And what did you do?””
“I signed a witness statement.””
My attorney immediately took out her notebook.
“What did the statement say?”” Melissa asked.
Chloe swallowed.
“That I had witnessed Claire authorize the property transaction.””
I stared at her.
“You've never witnessed me sign anything.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you sign?””
“Because my father told me it was just a procedural document. He said Ethan had already obtained your consent.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I never asked you to sign anything.””
Chloe turned toward him.
“You told me Claire had agreed to the loan!””
“I said Nathan was handling the paperwork.””
“You said everything was legal!””
Their voices rose until Melissa interrupted them.
“Chloe, do you have a copy of the statement?””
She nodded.
“My father emailed it to me.””
“Can you show us?””
Chloe hesitated, then retrieved her phone.
Her hands trembled as she searched through her messages. She opened an email and passed the phone to Melissa.
The attachment showed a witness declaration, signed by Chloe and dated the previous week.
Beneath her signature was a second witness name.
Margaret Whitmore.
I looked at my mother-in-law.
She began crying.
“I didn't understand what they were doing.””
“Did you know they were claiming I'd authorized the loan?””
“No. I thought it was about the renovations.””
Chloe looked horrified.
“They told me the same thing.””
Ethan paced toward the fireplace.
“Fine. So the paperwork was wrong. We can correct it.””
I turned to him.
“Correct it?””
“Yes. We can explain that the witness statements were mistaken.””
“Your brother-in-law's company applied for a four-million-dollar loan against property it doesn't own. Someone forged my signature. My brother's credentials were used to transfer corporate funds, and you think we can correct the paperwork?””
He dragged a hand through his hair.
“What do you want me to do?””
“Tell the truth.””
“I am telling the truth!””
Chloe suddenly began searching her email again.
“Wait.””
She stopped scrolling.
“There's another message.””
She turned the phone toward us.
The email had been sent by her father two days before the meeting. Its subject line read: *Your Future With Ethan.*
I read the message.
Her father had promised that once the transaction closed, Chloe would receive a trust fund worth $750,000. The money would be held in her name, separate from Ethan's business and protected from any future marital disputes.
But there was a condition.
She had to sign the witness declaration and agree not to discuss the transaction with anyone outside the family.
I looked at her.
“Did you know the money came from Sterling Crest?””
“No. I thought it was an investment distribution.””
“Did you know the declaration was false?””
She lowered her eyes.
“I knew I hadn't seen you sign it.””
The admission hung in the room.
“You signed anyway,” I said.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was pregnant, and I was scared. My father said Ethan's business was collapsing. He told me that if I didn't help, we'd lose everything before the baby was born.””
I studied her face.
She wasn't innocent. She had signed a false statement for financial gain, even if she hadn't understood the full scheme.
But she was also beginning to understand that the people who promised to protect her had been willing to use her.
Melissa copied the email and attached statement to the case file.
“Thank you for providing this. You should preserve the original messages and speak to independent counsel before making any further statements.””
Chloe nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“Claire, there's something else.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Chloe, don't.””
She flinched.
I moved between them.
“Let her speak.””
Chloe swallowed.
“My father told me that Nathan wasn't the person who came up with the plan.””
My heart began to pound.
“Who was?””
She looked at Ethan.
He went completely still.
“Ethan,” she whispered, “your wife deserves to know who approached my father first.””
Ethan's face drained of color.
I turned toward him.
“Who approached Bennett Meridian?””
He opened his mouth.
Then the doorbell rang.
Melissa glanced at the security monitor.
A uniformed officer stood outside with a woman carrying a leather briefcase.
The woman held up her identification.
“I'm Special Agent Laura Mitchell,” she announced.
“We're investigating suspected financial fraud involving Sterling Crest Group.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“We need to speak with Claire Whitmore, Ethan Whitmore, and Chloe Bennett.””
May you like
Then she added one sentence that made everyone in the foyer go silent.
“We also need to know why Nathan Sterling reported his own sister missing this morning.””
