Chapter 10: The Dollar That Could Cost Me Everything
“One dollar?””
I stared at the notification on my phone while Agent Mitchell waited for my response.
The transaction confirmation looked legitimate. It carried Sterling Crest's corporate branding, a reference number, and a digital signature bearing my name.
Beneath the confirmation sat a sentence that made my stomach turn.
*Final transfer. Ownership fully surrendered.*
“I didn't authorize this,” I said.
Agent Mitchell held out her hand.
“May I see the notification?””
I passed her the phone.
She examined the screen, then showed it to her colleague.
“When did you last access your corporate banking application?””
“This morning. I checked the transaction alerts before the board meeting.””
“Did you enter your password anywhere unusual?””
“No.””
“Did you approve a verification request?””
I thought back to the morning.
I'd received a notification asking me to confirm my identity before reviewing a restricted corporate document. The screen had looked identical to the company's standard security portal.
I'd approved it without thinking.
My heart sank.
“Someone may have used a verification request to capture my authentication.””
Agent Mitchell's expression tightened.
“That's possible. We'll need the technical records to establish what happened.””
Melissa stepped closer.
“The transaction may not be final. We should contact the bank immediately and request an emergency hold.””
“Do it,” I said.
She moved toward the hallway, already calling the bank's legal department.
Ethan stood near the fireplace, watching us with wide eyes.
“Claire, what does this mean?””
“It means someone is trying to transfer my shares.””
“But the company owns the mansion. If they take the company—”
“They could try to take the mansion, too.””
Margaret gripped the back of the sofa.
“Then we could lose the house?””
I looked at her.
“You were worried about that when you helped sign the false witness declaration?””
Her face crumpled.
“I didn't know this would happen.””
“You didn't ask.””
She sat down, trembling.
Chloe stared at her phone, then suddenly looked up.
“My father called me last night.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“What did he say?”” Agent Mitchell asked.
“He told me to pack my things and leave Ethan before the weekend. He said the investment was going to collapse and that I shouldn't be anywhere near the people involved.””
“Did he explain why?””
“No. He said he'd made a mistake trusting Nathan.””
Agent Mitchell exchanged a glance with her colleague.
“Do you still have the call?””
Chloe nodded.
“And he sent me a message afterward.””
She opened her phone and showed us the text.
*Whatever happens, don't mention the offshore company. You were never supposed to know it existed.*
I felt a chill spread through my chest.
“Which offshore company?””
Chloe scrolled through her messages.
“I don't know the name. But my father emailed me a document a few weeks ago. He said it was a draft agreement for my trust fund.””
“Can you find it?””
She searched through her inbox.
Seconds passed.
Then she stopped.
“Here.””
The document was titled Beneficiary Protection Agreement. Its first pages described a trust intended to secure her financial future and provide for her unborn child.
But the final page listed a company I recognized from the transfer notification.
Meridian Crown Holdings.
I leaned closer.
The company was registered overseas and appeared to have no public connection to Sterling Crest. Yet its beneficiary schedule listed a series of payments from Bennett Meridian, followed by transfers to two intermediary entities.
One of those entities had received money from Sterling Crest's acquisition reserve.
“How much?”” Agent Mitchell asked.
Chloe looked at the figures.
“Nearly three million dollars.””
My hands went cold.
“Why was this document sent to you?””
“Because my father wanted me to sign it.””
“Did you?””
She shook her head.
“No. I didn't understand the legal language, so I sent it to my attorney. He told me not to sign anything until he'd reviewed it.””
“Where is your attorney's review?””
“On my laptop.””
Agent Mitchell asked her to preserve the device and provide it through the proper process.
Then Melissa returned from the hallway.
“The bank has placed a temporary hold on the transfer request,” she said.
“But the ownership change was submitted through the company's electronic securities registry, not through an ordinary cash transfer.””
“Can they reverse it?”” I asked.
“They can suspend processing while the authenticity of the instruction is investigated. We need the registry's original logs.””
Agent Mitchell nodded.
“We'll coordinate with the relevant authorities.””
My phone rang.
Nathan.
I answered on speaker.
“Claire,” he said, sounding almost relieved.
“Thank God. I've been trying to reach you.””
“Have you?””
“I heard there's been a misunderstanding with the bank.””
“A misunderstanding?””
“Someone has attempted to transfer your shares. I'm sure we can resolve it.””
“Someone used my identity.””
“Then you should investigate Daniel.””
I glanced at Agent Mitchell.
“Daniel's credentials are already under review. This transaction came from my personal account.””
Nathan paused.
“Are you certain?””
“Yes.””
“Then perhaps you approved something without understanding it.””
I gripped the phone.
“You expect me to believe I surrendered my controlling shares for one dollar?””
“You'd be surprised what people sign when they're under pressure.””
“Did you submit the transfer?””
“I had nothing to do with it.””
“Then why did you report me missing this morning?””
“I was worried about you.””
“You were worried I might discover what you'd done.””
His voice hardened.
“Be careful, Claire. You don't understand the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
“Meet me tonight. Alone. I'll show you the original documents.””
Agent Mitchell immediately shook her head.
I ignored Nathan's attempt to sound reasonable.
“Where?””
“Your father's old office. Seven o'clock.””
“Why there?””
“Because that's where he kept the documents you were never supposed to see.””
The line went dead.
I lowered the phone.
Agent Mitchell stepped forward.
“You will not attend that meeting alone. If you choose to meet him, we'll arrange appropriate safeguards.””
I nodded.
Then I looked at Chloe.
“Your father said Nathan was involved with an offshore company. Do you know whether Ethan was involved, too?””
She hesitated.
Ethan immediately stood.
“Don't drag me into something I didn't do.””
Chloe turned toward him.
“You told me you were helping Nathan secure an investment.””
“I was.””
“You told me you'd signed documents.””
“Standard business paperwork!””
She stared at him.
“Then why did you ask me to sign a witness statement?””
Ethan looked away.
Agent Mitchell stepped between them.
“We'll address those questions during formal interviews.””
As the investigators prepared to leave, my phone vibrated again.
A new email had arrived from Sterling Crest's electronic registry.
The subject line read: *Emergency Review: Beneficial Ownership Transfer.*
I opened it.
The registry had accepted the transfer request for preliminary processing.
The final approval remained pending, but the supporting documents had already been uploaded.
I scrolled to the bottom.
There, beneath my forged signature, was a certification that the transfer had been approved by Sterling Crest's controlling shareholder.
The certificate carried a digital stamp.
My father's estate account.
And beside it was a note identifying the account holder who had authenticated the instruction.
*Claire Whitmore — verification completed.*
I stared at the screen.
Someone hadn't merely stolen my password.
They had built an entire chain of evidence designed to make it appear that I had willingly surrendered everything.
And unless we found the original records before the final approval, my brother might succeed in taking the company my father had spent his life building.
At seven o'clock, I would finally learn what my father had supposedly hidden.
But first, I needed to know whether the man I married had been helping Nathan from the beginning.
I turned toward Ethan.
“There's one question you haven't answered.””
He swallowed.
“What?””
“Before you changed the locks, did Nathan promise you a share of Sterling Crest?””
May you like
Ethan's eyes filled with panic.
And after a long silence, he whispered, “He promised me more than that.””
