Chapter 8: The Secret Inside the Safety Deposit Box

Caleb moved toward the back door.

"Sarah, stay here.""

I shook my head.

"I'm not hiding from my husband.""

Patricia grabbed my hand.

"Please. You don't understand what he's capable of.""

Another knock shook the front door.

"Sarah!"" Marcus shouted.

"I know you're in there!""

I walked toward the entrance.

Caleb blocked my path.

"Give me thirty seconds.""

He stepped outside through the side door.

I heard low voices, followed by the sound of a car door opening.

Then silence.

A minute later, Caleb returned alone.

"He's gone.""

"Where?""

"Driving toward downtown.""

I turned to Patricia.

"Tell me everything.""

She sat down and pressed her hands together.

"Margaret discovered that Evelyn had been moving money from Carter Industries. But she didn't just discover the theft. She found proof that Thomas was being poisoned.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Your father had been experiencing unexplained symptoms. Dizziness, memory problems, weakness. Margaret was a nurse. She recognized that something wasn't right.""

Caleb nodded.

"Thomas privately hired a specialist to examine him.""

Patricia continued.

"The doctor discovered traces of a toxic substance in his blood. Before he could complete his investigation, Thomas disappeared from the hospital.""

I felt sick.

"Was he murdered?""

"We don't know for certain. But Margaret believed he was.""

"Why didn't she go to the police?""

"She tried. The first investigator she contacted was working for Evelyn.""

Patricia wiped her eyes.

"Then Margaret received a threat. Someone sent you a photograph leaving school.""

My stomach tightened.

"Me?""

"You were sixteen. She believed they would hurt you to keep her quiet.""

I sat down.

"She could have told me.""

"She thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the truth.""

I looked at the silver key in my hand.

"What's inside the safety deposit box?""

Patricia glanced at Caleb.

"Everything Margaret collected before she disappeared. The original hospital records. Financial documents. And a recording.""

"A recording of what?""

"Thomas explaining why he believed his own family wanted him dead.""

The next morning, Caleb and I entered First National Bank.

A bank manager escorted us into a private room after verifying the documents.

The safety deposit box was smaller than I expected.

Inside were three envelopes, a flash drive, and a small leather-bound diary.

I recognized the handwriting on the first envelope.

For my daughter, Sarah.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

There was a letter.

My beautiful girl,

If you're reading this, I failed to protect you from the truth.

I loved your father. I loved him before money, before Carter Industries, and before the people who believed our lives could be controlled.

When Thomas discovered the theft, he asked me to help him investigate.

I found evidence that Evelyn had been transferring money through Daniel's accounts. But there was another person involved.

Someone much closer to you.

I stopped reading.

Caleb leaned closer.

"Keep going.""

The letter continued.

I discovered that the person approving the transfers was using a second identity. That identity belonged to someone who had access to Marcus's private financial records.

My heart pounded.

Then I reached the final line.

Sarah, the person you married was never supposed to become part of this plan. But he knew more than he ever admitted.

I put the letter down.

Caleb picked up the diary.

He opened it carefully.

Several pages contained bank transactions, hospital dates, and names.

One entry had been underlined repeatedly.

*NOVEMBER 14 — THOMAS DID NOT DIE AT THE HOSPITAL.*

I stared at the words.

"What does that mean?""

Caleb turned another page.

There was a photograph of Thomas leaving a hospital through a rear entrance.

The date matched the day he'd supposedly died.

But he wasn't alone.

A man stood beside him.

Marcus.

My husband.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Why was Marcus there?""

Caleb studied the photograph.

"He was twenty-four. He would have been old enough to understand what was happening.""

I shook my head.

"No. He told me his father died that night. He cried at the funeral.""

Caleb placed the photograph beneath a reading lamp.

"Look at the back.""

There was a handwritten note.

Marcus arrived at 9:42 p.m. He took the medical file and left with Evelyn.

I covered my mouth.

"Why would he take the medical file?""

Caleb opened the second envelope.

Inside was a printed email.

The sender was Marcus Carter.

The recipient was Daniel Carter.

The subject line read:

*THE GIRL MUST NEVER KNOW.*

The email was dated six weeks before my wedding.

I read it.

Daniel,

I've spoken to Mom. The original DNA results must disappear before the wedding.

If Sarah discovers who her father is, everything changes.

We need to make sure she signs the documents Dad left behind before she learns about the trust.

After that, she'll have no reason to question anything.

I couldn't breathe.

"Caleb...""

He read the email over my shoulder.

His expression hardened.

"This is serious.""

I kept reading.

The final sentence was worse.

Once we're married, I'll have access to everything Thomas left her. She'll trust me. She always has.

I dropped the paper.

Marcus hadn't simply hidden the truth.

He had planned our marriage around it.

Eleven years of birthdays, anniversaries, whispered promises, and shared memories suddenly felt like pieces of an elaborate performance.

I remembered him holding my hand during our wedding vows.

I remembered his father smiling from the front row.

Had Thomas known?

Had he watched his son marry his own daughter without being able to stop it?

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Caleb placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Sarah, there's something else.""

He connected the flash drive to the bank's secure computer.

A video file appeared.

The recording was dated two days before Thomas's disappearance.

Caleb pressed play.

Thomas appeared on the screen.

He looked exhausted, but his voice was clear.

"If you're watching this, it means I couldn't protect Sarah.""

He paused.

Then he leaned toward the camera.

"Evelyn isn't acting alone. Daniel is helping her. But the person I fear most is the one who has access to my private medical records.""

He looked directly into the camera.

"His name is...""

The recording suddenly distorted.

The screen went black.

I stared at Caleb.

"What happened?""

He checked the file.

"Someone damaged the last section.""

"Can you recover it?""

"Possibly.""

Then a new notification appeared on the computer.

An email had arrived from an unknown sender.

There was no subject.

Only one attachment.

A photograph of Marcus standing outside the bank.

Taken less than five minutes earlier.

May you like

Beneath it were eight words.

*STOP SEARCHING, SARAH. YOUR HUSBAND IS WATCHING.*
