Chapter 13: The Woman Richard Hale Was Afraid Of
"Put the ledger on the floor, Sarah.""
Richard Hale's voice echoed through the warehouse.
Outside, four men stood beside black vehicles. Two wore police uniforms. Another held a flashlight trained directly at the entrance.
And beside Richard stood my mother.
Margaret.
Alive.
Her hands were tied behind her back, and a dark bruise marked her cheek.
I pressed the ledger against my chest.
"Let her go!""
Richard adjusted his glasses.
"That's not how negotiations work.""
My mother shook her head desperately.
"Sarah, don't give him anything!""
Richard pushed the gun closer to her back.
"Your mother has always been terrible at understanding consequences.""
James stepped forward.
"Richard, you coward. You've been hiding behind other people's money for eleven years.""
Richard smiled.
"James Anderson. I must say, you look remarkably well for a dead man.""
James clenched his fists.
"You tried to frame me for stealing from Carter Industries.""
"I didn't try. I succeeded.""
"You helped poison Thomas.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Careful.""
Caleb moved toward the side entrance.
One of Richard's men immediately raised his weapon.
"Don't move!""
Caleb stopped.
Marcus looked at his brother's photograph in his hand.
"Where's Daniel?""
Richard laughed.
"Daniel? Your brother has always been useful, Marcus. Unfortunately, he was never intelligent enough to understand who was actually running things.""
My stomach tightened.
"You were using him?""
"Of course. Daniel wanted money. Evelyn wanted control.
Marcus wanted his father's approval. Everyone had a weakness.""
Richard looked directly at me.
"And Thomas's weakness was you.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because he couldn't bear the thought of losing another daughter.""
James stepped forward.
"Don't you dare use her father's name.""
Richard ignored him.
"Thomas discovered the original financial scheme. He intended to expose me, Evelyn, and several investors. Unfortunately, he became ill before he could make that announcement.""
"You poisoned him," I said.
Richard shrugged.
"I arranged the circumstances. Evelyn handled the medical access. Daniel provided the substance. Marcus removed the records.""
Marcus looked as though he might collapse.
"I didn't know what was in those files.""
Richard laughed.
"Of course you didn't. You never wanted to know anything that might inconvenience you.""
I stared at the man who had once reviewed my husband's family estate.
The man who had sat across from me and explained my inheritance.
The man who had pretended to help uncover the truth.
"You were investigating yourself.""
"Very observant.""
My mother began crying.
"Sarah, listen to me. He wants the original ledger because it contains the names of everyone involved.""
I looked down at the document.
"Then why is he afraid of it?""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Because it contains information that should have remained private.""
James suddenly spoke.
"Sarah, look at the last page.""
I opened the ledger.
The final page contained a list of payments made over twelve years.
Beside each payment was a handwritten initial.
R.H.
E.C.
D.C.
M.C.
And one additional set of initials.
S.M.
I stared.
"What does S.M. mean?""
Richard's face changed.
James answered.
"Sarah Mitchell.""
I looked up.
"Me?""
"Someone created a company in your name when you were sixteen. It received millions in transfers. Richard used your identity to conceal money stolen from Carter Industries.""
I turned toward Richard.
"You stole money using my name?""
He smiled faintly.
"Your mother was supposed to sign the original authorization. She refused.""
Margaret began struggling against his grip.
"He threatened Sarah! He told me he would destroy her future if I didn't disappear.""
Richard pressed his gun against her again.
"Enough.""
I understood now.
My mother hadn't abandoned me.
She had been trying to protect me from a man who had turned my identity into a financial weapon.
Richard extended his free hand.
"The ledger.""
I looked at James.
He gave the smallest nod.
I slowly lowered the document.
Then Marcus stepped forward.
"Richard, take me instead.""
Everyone turned toward him.
Richard laughed.
"How touching. The golden son finally discovers a conscience.""
Marcus removed his phone.
"I recorded everything you just said.""
Richard's smile vanished.
"You stupid boy.""
Marcus held up the screen.
"The recording is already being uploaded.""
Richard turned toward the men beside him.
"Get the phone!""
One of the uniformed officers moved.
But before he could reach Marcus, a loud voice came from outside.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!""
Blue and red lights flooded the warehouse.
Richard spun around.
Caleb suddenly shoved a metal cart into the nearest guard.
James pulled me behind a concrete pillar.
My mother fell to the ground.
Marcus rushed toward her.
A gunshot exploded.
I screamed.
Marcus collapsed beside the entrance.
Richard dropped his weapon and ran toward the rear exit.
But he didn't get far.
Two federal agents tackled him against the metal gate.
Within seconds, the warehouse was filled with shouting, footsteps, and flashing lights.
I ran to my mother.
"Mom!""
She grabbed my face with both hands.
"My baby.""
I buried my face against her shoulder.
For eleven years, I had imagined this moment.
I had imagined asking why she left.
Why she never called.
Why she let me grow up believing I was alone.
But all I could do was hold her.
Then I heard Marcus groan.
He was lying on his side, blood spreading across his shirt.
I rushed toward him.
"Marcus!""
He looked up at me.
"I'm sorry.""
I grabbed his hand.
"Don't talk.""
He managed a weak smile.
"There's something you need to know.""
A paramedic knelt beside him.
Marcus tightened his fingers around mine.
"Daniel wasn't the one who switched the DNA results.""
I stared at him.
"Who did?""
He looked toward Richard, who was being handcuffed.
Then he whispered:
"Your mother did.""
I turned slowly.
Margaret stood behind me.
Her face was pale.
And when our eyes met, she didn't deny it.
May you like
She simply whispered:
"I had a reason, Sarah. And if you knew what I was trying to protect you from, you would understand why I did it.""
