Chapter 5: The Will That Changed Everything
Richard Hale had represented Thomas Carter for nearly thirty years.
He was a narrow-faced man with silver-framed glasses and a habit of speaking as though every word had been carefully weighed before leaving his mouth.
He sat opposite me and placed his briefcase on the floor.
"Before we proceed, I need to ask one question.""
I nodded.
"Did you know Thomas Carter was your biological father before today?""
"No.""
"Did you ever receive financial support from him?""
"No.""
"Did he ever contact you privately?""
I thought about the occasional anonymous birthday card I'd received as a child.
The expensive schoolbooks that had mysteriously appeared at our apartment.
The college tuition payment my mother claimed came from a scholarship fund.
"No," I answered.
"Not that I knew of.""
Richard removed a pair of reading glasses.
"Then I believe you have been deprived of considerably more than an inheritance.""
Evelyn interrupted.
"This is ridiculous. Thomas was ill when he signed those documents.""
Richard looked at her.
"Thomas passed a full medical competency examination three days before executing the amendment.""
"He was taking medication.""
"His physician documented that his medication did not affect his decision-making capacity.""
"You weren't there!""
"I was the attorney who prepared the documents.""
Evelyn fell silent.
Richard opened his briefcase and removed a thick legal folder.
"Thomas established a separate trust for Sarah eleven years ago. The trust was to remain confidential until she reached the age of thirty-five or until someone attempted to transfer ownership of the mansion without her consent.""
I stared at him.
"I'm thirty-four.""
"Yes. Your birthday is in six weeks.""
Marcus let out a bitter laugh.
"So Dad planned this entire thing?""
Richard looked at him.
"Your father planned to protect his daughter.""
"From me?""
"From anyone who might attempt to exploit her legal position.""
Vanessa shifted beside Marcus.
"Can we please stop talking as if Sarah is some innocent princess? She signed the divorce papers. She agreed to give up everything.""
Richard turned toward me.
"Did you sign the documents voluntarily?""
"I signed them because Marcus threatened to leave me with nothing.""
"Did you receive independent legal advice?""
"No.""
"Did you understand that the documents attempted to transfer property you already legally owned?""
"Yes.""
Richard nodded.
"Then those signatures may be legally contestable. Especially if coercion, misrepresentation, or fraud can be established.""
Marcus jumped up.
"You can't just invalidate everything!""
Richard closed the folder.
"I haven't invalidated anything. I'm explaining the law.""
Vanessa grabbed Marcus's arm.
"Tell him to stop. We have the settlement agreement.""
Richard looked at her.
"Ms. Reed, unless you are a party to this estate, I would appreciate it if you allowed the people involved to speak.""
Her face reddened.
Marcus turned toward Richard.
"What about the company shares?""
"Those are a separate matter. Thomas's amendment transferred a portion of his voting shares into Sarah's trust.""
Richard removed a document.
"Twenty-five percent of Carter Industries.""
Marcus stared at the page.
"That's impossible. Daniel and I own the company.""
"Not entirely.""
"How much do I own?""
Richard checked another page.
"Your current holdings amount to twenty percent. Daniel owns twenty percent. Evelyn owns ten percent. The remaining fifty percent belongs to the family trust and several outside investors.""
Marcus looked stunned.
"So Sarah could control more shares than me?""
"Potentially, yes.""
Evelyn suddenly laughed.
It wasn't a happy sound.
"Do you really think Thomas would have given her control of his company? He knew nothing about business.""
I looked at her.
"Who do you think kept Carter Industries alive when Marcus nearly lost the company?""
She didn't answer.
Richard glanced at me.
"I have reviewed the financial records from that period. Your work was substantial.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Can we stop pretending Sarah built everything?""
I stood.
"Remember when your father was hospitalized and the company couldn't meet payroll?""
Marcus looked at me.
"You said you had secured a temporary loan.""
"I didn't secure a loan. I sold my grandmother's jewelry and used my savings to pay the employees.""
His expression changed.
"You told me it was a short-term investment.""
"It was. I never asked you to repay me.""
Vanessa looked between us.
"How much?""
I answered without looking at her.
"Almost $240,000.""
Richard wrote something down.
"Do you have records of that transaction?""
"Every receipt. Every bank transfer. Every employee payment.""
Marcus sat back down.
For the first time, he seemed unable to find an argument.
Richard opened the amendment to Thomas's will.
"There's one additional condition.""
He read aloud.
My daughter Sarah shall receive the voting shares and property assigned to her without interference from any member of my household. If any person attempts to conceal her identity, falsify her inheritance records, or force her to surrender her legal rights, the trustees shall immediately conduct a full investigation into the Carter family accounts.
Evelyn gripped the armrest.
Richard continued.
"Any individual found to have participated in deliberate financial misconduct may have their beneficial interest suspended pending investigation.""
Marcus slowly turned toward his mother.
"Mom, what does that mean?""
Richard looked down at his papers.
"It means the investigation into the missing $6.24 million will begin immediately.""
Evelyn stood.
"I want my lawyer.""
"You are welcome to contact one.""
"I won't sit here and be accused of stealing!""
Richard calmly closed the folder.
"Then I suggest you explain these.""
He placed several bank statements on the table.
They showed transfers from Carter Industries to three offshore accounts.
Each transfer had been authorized through Evelyn's office.
But the final statement contained something even more disturbing.
A payment of $1.2 million made six months after Thomas's disappearance.
The recipient's name was clearly printed.
MARGARET ANNE MITCHELL.
I grabbed the document.
"Why did my mother receive this money?""
Evelyn looked away.
Richard adjusted his glasses.
"That is precisely what we need to establish.""
I looked at Caleb.
"You said my mother disappeared from the hospital. Was she being paid to stay away?""
Caleb didn't answer immediately.
Then he reached into his jacket and removed a small photograph.
It showed a woman standing outside a house near the Georgia coast.
She looked older.
Her hair was shorter.
But I recognized her face.
My mother.
On the back was a handwritten date.
Just three months ago.
My knees weakened.
"Where did you get this?""
Caleb spoke softly.
"From a surveillance photograph taken outside a residential property in Savannah.""
I stared at him.
"Is she alive?""
He nodded.
"Yes, Sarah.""
My eyes filled.
"Then why hasn't she contacted me?""
Caleb looked toward Richard.
"Because someone has been paying her to remain silent.""
Richard examined the photograph.
Then he turned it over.
There was a second handwritten note.
If Sarah ever discovers the truth, do not let her come looking for me.
I could barely breathe.
"Who wrote that?""
May you like
Caleb's answer was almost a whisper.
"Your mother did.""
