Chapter 8: Ethan’s Last Warning

I left my parents’ house without saying goodbye.

For the first time in my life, I walked away from my father without looking back.

Because I finally understood something.

The pain from losing Ethan had been unbearable.

But discovering that people knew pieces of the truth and kept them from me?

That was a different kind of pain.

That was betrayal.

Daniel was waiting for me when I arrived at his office.

He looked at my face and immediately knew something had happened.

“What did you find out?””

I placed the anonymous letter on his desk.

Then I put my phone beside it.

“Everything.””

Daniel read the message.

His expression changed.

“You received this?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Last night.””

He leaned back.

“Emma…”

“What did Ethan change?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he opened a locked drawer.

From inside, he removed a folder.

My heart started racing.

“You had this?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was instructed not to.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“By Ethan.””

The room became silent.

I stared at him.

“My husband told you not to tell me?””

“Until certain conditions were met.””

“What conditions?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

New estate papers.

A letter.

And Ethan’s handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

The same handwriting that used to appear on grocery lists.

The same handwriting that labeled boxes when we moved.

The same handwriting that wrote birthday cards for our children.

My hands trembled as I picked up the letter.

Emma, if you’re reading this, something happened that I hoped never would.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

Daniel looked away, giving me privacy.

I continued.

First, I need you to know one thing. I never wanted you to carry this alone.

A tear fell onto the paper.

I started noticing things that didn’t make sense. Missing files. Strange calls. Someone asking questions about our finances.

I swallowed.

Finances.

Not the settlement.

Before the crash.

I don’t know who I can trust.

My breathing became shallow.

Then I reached the sentence that changed everything.

But I know one thing. If anything happens to me, do not let anyone convince you to change our plan.

Our plan.

The foundation.

The money.

The protection.

Daniel spoke softly.

I did.

The money cannot become a reward for people who abandon you when you need them most.

I covered my mouth.

Because Ethan knew.

He knew.

Not about the crash.

Not about the future.

But about the people around us.

Your parents may try to explain. They may say they were afraid. They may say they were protecting you.

My heart stopped.

Because that was exactly what they were doing.

Listen carefully, Emma. Love is shown when there is nothing to gain.

I closed my eyes.

That was Ethan.

That was always Ethan.

The letter ended with one final sentence.

If someone only returns when you have something they want, remember who stayed when you had nothing.

I put the paper down.

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Daniel finally said:

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the folder around.

“There was another beneficiary Ethan added.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Daniel pointed to the page.

A name.

A name I had never seen before.

My heart began pounding.

“Who is this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

I stared at the document.

May you like

Because beneath the name was a note Ethan had written.

*This person knows why the crash happened.*
