Chapter 10: The Shadow Behind the Crash

Rachel locked the door behind us.

The sound echoed through the small house.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

I had spent six months believing my family died because of a terrible accident.

A drunk driver.

A rainy highway.

A moment of bad luck.

That was the story everyone gave me.

The police.

The news.

The insurance company.

Everyone.

But now I was standing in a stranger’s living room, holding evidence my husband left behind, and realizing Ethan had been afraid of something I never understood.

“Who is watching you?”” I asked.

Rachel looked toward the window.

“People who don’t want questions answered.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She swallowed.

“I worked with a transportation safety research group. We studied accident patterns. We noticed something strange.””

“What kind of strange?””

“Certain dangerous road conditions were repeatedly reported, then ignored.””

I frowned.

“By who?””

Rachel hesitated.

“People with influence.””

The word hung in the air.

Influence.

Not criminals.

Not strangers.

People who could make problems disappear.

“And Ethan?””

“He found documents that connected those reports to specific decisions.””

I looked down at the photograph in my hand.

The dark sedan.

The same vehicle appearing near him before the crash.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Rachel’s expression softened.

“Because he loved you.””

That answer hurt.

Because it sounded exactly like something Ethan would do.

Protect me.

Carry the fear alone.

Pretend everything was fine.

Rachel continued.

“He thought telling you would put you at risk.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“He died trying to protect me.””

She didn’t respond.

Because there was nothing anyone could say.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Did he know he was going to die?””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“But he knew he was being watched.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Emma, where are you?””

His voice sounded urgent.

“With Rachel.””

A pause.

Then:

“You found her.””

“Yes.””

“Leave.””

The seriousness in his voice made me stand straighter.

“What happened?””

“Someone accessed the estate file.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“An hour ago, someone tried to get information about Ethan’s changes.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know yet.””

I looked at Rachel.

She already knew.

“They’re moving faster,” she whispered.

Daniel heard her.

“Rachel is there?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Emma, listen carefully. Do not go home.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because someone was waiting outside your house.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“The police are checking the area now.””

The room became silent.

Rachel walked closer.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Someone was at my house.””

Her face went pale.

“They know you found the documents.””

I felt something shift inside me.

For months, I felt powerless.

Broken.

Like life had taken everything from me.

But now?

Now someone was afraid.

They were afraid of what Ethan left behind.

And that meant Ethan had been right.

“I need to know everything,” I said.

Rachel looked at me.

“Emma—”

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“I spent six months asking why my family was gone.””

I held up the photograph.

“Now I finally have a chance to find out.””

Rachel stared at me.

Then slowly nodded.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

She walked to the boxes and pulled out a small recorder.

“This is the last message Ethan sent me.””

My hands froze.

“His voice?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you give me this before?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because he told me not to unless you were ready.””

I stared at the recorder.

Ready.

Was anyone ever ready to hear the final words of the person they loved?

Rachel pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Ethan’s voice came through.

Weak.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

“Rachel, if you’re hearing this, something happened.””

My heart stopped.

“Please find Emma.””

A pause.

Then his voice became quieter.

“Tell her I’m sorry.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Tell her I should have told her the truth.””

The recording continued.

Then Ethan said the words that changed everything.

May you like

“Because the person who caused this isn’t a stranger.””

The recording ended.
