Chapter 12: The Letter My Father Kept

I drove to my parents’ house before sunrise.

Daniel wanted to come.

I told him no.

Not because I didn’t need help.

Because I needed one moment where I could face my father alone.

The man who taught me to ride a bike.

The man who walked me into school on my first day.

The man I once believed could never betray me.

When I arrived, my mother was waiting outside.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Like six months of guilt had aged her years.

“You came.””

I nodded.

“Where is he?””

She looked toward the house.

“Sleeping.””

I almost laughed.

Sleeping.

How could anyone sleep while carrying secrets like this?

She led me to the kitchen.

Then she placed an envelope on the table.

My name was written on it.

Not Ethan’s.

Mine.

But it was unopened.

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t you give this to me?””

My mother looked away.

“Because your father told me not to.””

I stared at her.

“And you listened?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

That answer hurt more than an excuse.

Because it was the truth.

She chose him.

Again.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Ethan’s handwriting.

Emma,

My heart broke immediately.

If this reaches you, I need you to know something important.

I sat down.

Your father helped me more than you realize.

I stopped.

What?

I kept reading.

I know he has made mistakes. I know he can be stubborn. But when I needed someone to look into this, he tried.

My confusion grew.

This wasn’t what I expected.

The reason I trusted your father is because he understood something.

The next sentence made me hold my breath.

He knew our family could be in danger.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

I continued.

But he was afraid.

Afraid.

My father.

He thought staying quiet would protect everyone.

I lowered the letter.

For the first time, I saw another possibility.

Maybe my father wasn’t the person behind everything.

Maybe he was someone who made the wrong choice.

A terrible choice.

But not the cause.

The front door opened.

My father appeared.

He looked at me.

Then at the letter.

His face collapsed.

“You found it.””

I stood.

“You knew.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice was quiet.

“Because Ethan asked me to help him.””

“Then why did you abandon me?””

The question hit him.

He looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“My husband and children died.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t know what it feels like to sit alone in that church.””

He whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

For the first time, I believed he meant it.

But regret did not erase damage.

“What happened that night?””

My father looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“Emma…”

“Tell me.””

He took a long breath.

“Ethan called me the night before the crash.””

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?””

My father’s hands shook.

“He told me he had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“Proof that someone inside the highway company knew the road was dangerous.””

The room went silent.

“And?””

My father looked back at me.

“He said if anything happened to him, I needed to protect you and the children.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Then why didn’t you?””

My father had no answer.

And that silence was the most painful answer of all.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

I saw the name.

And I knew immediately.

Because it was the same name Ethan had been investigating.

Richmond Highway Solutions.

My father answered.

A voice came through.

May you like

And even from across the room, I heard the words.

“Mr. Carter, we need to know what Emma has found.””
