Chapter 13: The Final Piece of Evidence

My father ended the call without answering.

But it was already too late.

The damage was done.

I had heard enough.

The fear in his eyes.

The way his hand shook.

The way he looked at the phone like it was a weapon.

For years, I thought my father was unbreakable.

Now I realized he had been breaking silently.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

He didn’t respond.

“Dad.””

He sat down slowly.

“Someone from Richmond Highway Solutions.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I looked at both of them.

“How long have you been dealing with them?””

My father rubbed his face.

“Since before the crash.””

The words landed heavily.

“Before?””

He nodded.

“Ethan came to me because he believed they were covering something up.””

“What exactly?””

My father looked toward the hallway.

The same hallway where I had walked as a child.

The same house where I once felt safe.

“Ethan discovered that a safety inspection report had been changed.””

I frowned.

“What report?””

“The section of I-95 where the accident happened.””

My heart stopped.

“He knew?””

“He suspected.””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“He found that repairs were delayed. Warnings were ignored.””

“Why?””

“Because fixing it would have cost millions.””

I felt sick.

A price tag.

That was what my family’s lives had become.

A calculation.

A number.

My father continued.

“Ethan wanted to expose it.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

“Because he wanted proof strong enough that nobody could bury it.””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

That was Ethan.

Always thinking ahead.

Always protecting.

Even when I didn’t know I needed protection.

“What happened after that?””

My father looked ashamed.

“I told him to be careful.””

“That’s all?””

“I was scared.””

The anger returned.

“You were scared, so you stayed quiet.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I thought if I stayed out of it, nobody would come after us.””

I stared at him.

“And did it work?””

He looked down.

“No.””

A silence filled the room.

Then my phone buzzed.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Emma?””

“I know.””

A pause.

“You know what?””

“I know about the report.””

Another pause.

“How?””

“My father.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Then you’re closer than I thought.””

“What does that mean?””

“I found something.””

I stepped away from my parents.

“What?””

“Ethan’s final email.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

“Hidden in the estate records.””

“Read it.””

“I think you need to see it yourself.””

Twenty minutes later, Daniel arrived.

He handed me a laptop.

On the screen was an email.

From Ethan.

Sent twelve hours before the crash.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

If something happens, this is not an accident.

I stopped breathing.

The next line appeared.

I have identified the person who approved the altered report.

My eyes moved down.

A name.

A name I recognized.

Not from business.

Not from documents.

From my own life.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the person Ethan named was someone I never expected.

Someone who had stood beside my family for years.

Someone who attended Lily’s birthday parties.

Someone who held Noah when he was a baby.

My father saw my expression.

“Emma?””

I looked up.

“It’s someone we know.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Who?””

I turned the screen toward them.

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was impossible.

The person Ethan suspected wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been close enough to know our routines.

Close enough to know where we would be.

Close enough to hurt us.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A calm voice spoke.

“Emma, you’re looking in the wrong direction.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

“You should stop before you destroy your own family.””

My father stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

I ignored him.

“Did you kill my husband?””

Silence.

Then the voice said:

“No.””

A pause.

“But I know who did.””

The call ended.

And a message appeared seconds later.

A photograph.

Of Ethan.

May you like

Taken the morning of the crash.

And standing beside him was the person named in the email.
