Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Money
The word baby seemed to freeze the entire parking lot.
Marcus looked at Brianna.
“What baby?””
Ashley stood motionless, her hand pressed against the cheek Brianna had slapped. The phone in her other hand trembled so violently that she nearly dropped it.
Victor, however, appeared delighted.
“Well,” he said, slipping the forged agreement back into his jacket, “this birthday has become more interesting than I anticipated.””
I stepped toward him.
“Get away from them.””
He raised both hands.
“I'm merely observing.””
“No. You're enjoying this.””
His smile widened.
“Perhaps.””
Marcus turned to Ashley.
“Please tell me what she's talking about.””
Ashley swallowed hard.
“I wanted to tell you, but Brianna said—”
“Don't blame me!”” Brianna shouted.
“You were the one who agreed to keep it secret!””
Ashley flinched.
“I agreed because you said you were protecting everyone.””
“That's exactly what I was doing!””
“By taking money from Ethan's company?””
Brianna's face crumpled.
For a moment, she looked less like the glamorous woman who had mocked my birthday gift and more like someone who had run out of excuses.
Then Marcus spoke again.
“What baby?””
Ashley lowered her eyes.
“I'm pregnant.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Okay. Congratulations, I suppose, but what does that have to do with Brianna?””
Ashley shook her head.
“It's not my baby.””
Nobody moved.
She looked directly at me.
“Ethan, I'm sorry. I should have told you months ago.””
A strange pressure built behind my ribs.
“What are you saying?””
Ashley began to cry.
“Brianna came to me in April. She said she needed help arranging some payments for a business investment. She promised she'd explain everything later.””
Brianna interrupted.
“That's not how it happened!””
Ashley ignored her.
“She transferred money into my account and asked me to move it to another company. I didn't know where it came from at first. When I found out, I panicked.””
“Then why didn't you come to me?”” I asked.
“Because she told me you already knew.””
I stared at Brianna.
She didn't deny it.
Ashley continued.
“Then, in June, Brianna told me she was pregnant. She said the father was Marcus, but she didn't want him to know until after the wedding because she was afraid he'd pressure her to quit working.””
Marcus went completely still.
“You told me you couldn't have children,” he whispered to Brianna.
She shut her eyes.
“I was scared.””
“Why would you tell me that?””
“Because I didn't know how you'd react!””
Marcus took a slow breath.
“I'm asking you a simple question. Are you pregnant?””
Brianna nodded.
He looked as though the ground had shifted beneath his feet.
“And is the baby mine?””
Brianna began sobbing.
“Yes.””
Ashley covered her face.
I felt no relief, no satisfaction, no sense of victory. Only an exhausting sadness at how many lives had been dragged into a web of lies.
Marcus sat down on the stone ledge beside the birthday cake.
For a few seconds, he simply stared at his hands.
Then he looked up.
“When were you planning to tell me?””
“After the wedding,” Brianna whispered.
“Our wedding is in six weeks.””
“I know.””
“You were going to marry me without telling me you were pregnant?””
“I was going to tell you!””
“When? At the altar?””
She reached for him, but he stood before she could touch him.
“Don't.””
One word. Quiet. Final.
Brianna's shoulders shook.
“I love you, Marcus.””
He stared at her.
“Do you love me, or do you love the life you think I can give you?””
She couldn't answer.
I recognized the silence.
I'd heard it whenever I'd asked why she needed another loan, whenever she'd explained a mysterious expense, whenever she'd promised that next month would be different.
I had mistaken her silence for shame.
Now I understood that sometimes it had simply been calculation.
Victor checked his watch.
“This is touching, but the financial matter remains unresolved.””
I turned toward him.
“You're not collecting a dollar from me tonight.””
“Your company benefited from the transactions.””
“My company lost money through transactions I didn't authorize.””
“Then prove it.””
“I intend to.””
He looked at Brianna.
“Your deadline remains Friday.””
She shook her head frantically.
“I don't have it.””
“Then you'll have to find it.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“You've been threatening her?””
Victor looked him up and down.
“I'm a creditor. If you want to play rescuer, feel free to pay her balance.””
Marcus's expression turned cold.
“I wouldn't pay you a penny.””
“Then I suggest you stay out of business that doesn't concern you.””
Marcus looked at Brianna.
“Apparently, everything concerns me.””
Victor walked back toward his SUV.
Before getting in, he turned to me.
“Ethan, one piece of friendly advice. Investigate your accounts carefully. People tend to overlook the first theft because it comes from someone they trust.””
He disappeared into the vehicle.
The SUV pulled away from the curb, leaving the rest of us beneath the hotel's golden lights.
I looked at Ashley.
“Did you know about the forged guarantee?””
“No,” she said immediately.
“I swear. I only moved the money because Brianna said it was part of a legitimate investment.””
“Did you keep any of it?””
She shook her head.
“Not a dollar. She told me the transfers were temporary. I have the messages.””
“Then preserve them. My attorney will need everything.””
Ashley nodded.
Brianna suddenly stepped between us.
“Ethan, please. You can't involve the police. I'm pregnant.””
I looked at her.
“Those two things aren't connected.””
“They'll destroy my life!””
“You were willing to destroy mine.””
She grabbed my sleeve.
“I made mistakes. But you know me. You know I'm not a bad person.””
I gently pulled away.
“I knew who I thought you were.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“What about the Porsche?””
I stared at her.
“What about it?””
“You bought it for me.””
“Yes.””
“You can't just take it back.””
“I can, actually. The title hasn't been transferred.””
She looked horrified.
“After everything we've been through, you're going to leave me with nothing?””
I almost answered. Then I remembered the old sedan, the laughter, and her words about what I was worth.
“You're not entitled to my money because we were together.””
She looked toward Marcus.
“Tell him he's being cruel.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Don't involve me in this.””
“But our baby—”
“I'm going to make sure the baby is safe,” he said.
“That doesn't mean I'm going to marry you.””
Brianna stared at him in disbelief.
“You can't cancel a wedding over one mistake!””
“One mistake?”” Marcus repeated.
“You lied about another man, stole money, hid a pregnancy, and apparently helped someone forge a financial agreement.””
He picked up the birthday cake.
“I need time to think.””
Then he walked toward the hotel entrance without looking back.
Ashley followed him after a moment, leaving Brianna standing alone beside the sedan.
I should have felt victorious.
Instead, I felt tired.
I unlocked the Porsche and opened the passenger door to retrieve the bouquet of roses. Beneath the flowers, the small velvet ring box sat exactly where I'd left it.
Brianna watched me.
“Were you really going to propose?””
I closed my fingers around the box.
“Yes.””
Her face crumpled.
For the first time that night, she seemed to understand what she'd lost.
I placed the ring box in my pocket, then opened the envelope and removed the letter I'd written for her.
I didn't tear it up. I didn't throw it at her.
I folded it carefully and slipped it back inside.
“Goodbye, Brianna.””
She reached for me one last time.
“Ethan, wait.””
I stopped, but I didn't turn around.
“There is something else you need to know,” she whispered.
“About the money.””
I closed my eyes.
“What now?””
“The transfers didn't start in April.””
I turned slowly.
Brianna's face was wet with tears, but her voice had become strangely steady.
“The first payment was made nearly a year ago. And I didn't authorize it.””
My heart began to pound.
“Then who did?””
She looked toward the hotel, where Ashley had just disappeared through the doors.
“Someone who had access to your accounts before I ever did.””
May you like
She paused, then delivered the words that made the entire night take on a new and terrifying meaning.
“Ethan, the first payment was approved under your mother's login.””
