Chapter 11: What My Father Left in the Porsche

The Porsche sat in the underground garage beneath my apartment building, untouched since the night of Brianna's birthday.

I arrived just after noon with Rebecca and a security specialist she'd hired to inspect the vehicle. I carried the keys in my right hand, but I didn't unlock the doors immediately.

“Before we open it,” Rebecca said, “I want you to understand something. Whoever called you knew where the car was and what might be inside. That means this could be a trap.””

“Or my father knows something I don't.””

“Those possibilities aren't mutually exclusive.””

The security specialist, a quiet man named Owen, examined the exterior and checked beneath the chassis. After several minutes, he straightened.

“No obvious tracking device. I'll inspect the interior next.””

I unlocked the car.

The bouquet of white roses had wilted. Their petals had fallen across the passenger seat, and the red ribbon lay crumpled on the floor.

The velvet ring box was still in the center console.

I opened it.

The diamond caught the overhead lights.

For three years, I'd imagined giving that ring to Brianna. I'd pictured her laughing, crying, and throwing her arms around me.

Now it looked like a relic from a life that had never existed.

I closed the box and handed it to Rebecca.

“Keep this safe.””

Then I noticed something beneath the console's removable storage tray.

A small black compartment had been fitted behind it.

I'd never seen it before.

“Owen?””

He crouched beside the car and examined the compartment.

“Looks aftermarket. There's a concealed latch here.””

He pressed it.

The compartment opened with a soft click.

Inside lay a brass key and a folded piece of paper.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My father's.

Ethan, if you're reading this, someone has decided it's time for you to learn the truth. Don't trust the story you were told about my death. Find the room behind the clock.

I read it twice.

Rebecca took the paper.

“Do you recognize the phrase?””

I nodded slowly.

“When I was a kid, my father had an antique grandfather clock in his study. He used to tell me it was the only clock in the house that never lost time.””

“Was there a room behind it?””

“No. Just a wall.””

Owen examined the brass key.

“There's a number stamped on this. Fourteen.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Can you find out whether my father rented a storage unit or office with that number?””

“We can investigate, but we shouldn't assume the note is authentic.””

I slipped the paper into an evidence sleeve.

“Then we'll verify it.””

My mother called while Rebecca contacted a private investigator.

I answered immediately.

“Mom?””

“Ethan, I received an email from an address I haven't seen in twelve years.””

My chest tightened.

“What did it say?””

She was quiet for a moment.

“It said Robert wants to meet me.””

I looked at the note in my hand.

“Did you respond?””

“No. I wanted to call you first.””

“Forward it to Rebecca. Don't contact him.””

“Ethan, if your father is alive—”

“I know.””

My voice cracked.

She exhaled shakily.

“There's something I never told you about the funeral.””

I closed my eyes.

“What?””

“The hospital said his body was too badly damaged for identification by family. They asked me to rely on the official report and dental records.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I believed them. And because I was terrified that if I questioned anything, I'd lose the only certainty I had left.””

I leaned against the Porsche.

“Mom, did you ever see his body?””

“No.””

The garage suddenly felt colder.

“Why didn't you tell me that?””

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I swallowed hard.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

We ended the call after she promised to send the email.

Rebecca returned with a phone number for a storage facility in Charleston. The manager confirmed that unit fourteen had been rented under an alias connected to one of my father's former businesses.

The unit was still active.

Its rental payments had been made through a holding company associated with Victor Hale.

We arranged for the investigator to meet us there the following morning.

That evening, I went to the hotel where Brianna had celebrated her birthday. I wasn't there to see her. Ashley had agreed to meet me in the lobby with the original messages and transaction records.

She arrived wearing a long coat, her hair pulled into a loose knot. She looked exhausted.

“I brought everything I could find,” she said, placing a thick folder on the table.

“Thank you.””

She hesitated.

“Ethan, there's something you should know about Brianna.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Unless it concerns the investigation, I'd rather not hear it.””

“It does.””

She opened the folder and showed me a photograph.

Brianna stood beside Victor outside an office building. This time, a third person was visible in the reflection of the glass door.

A man wearing a dark coat.

Silver hair.

My father's face.

The photograph was dated eight months earlier.

I stared at it.

“Did Brianna take this?””

“Yes. She told me she was meeting an investor. I didn't recognize the man in the reflection until I saw Daniel's recording.””

“Did she know who he was?””

Ashley nodded.

“She told me he was your father.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because Victor told her not to. He said Robert wanted to surprise you once the company transfer was complete.””

“Why would she agree to that?””

Ashley looked down.

“Because Victor promised to erase her debt if she helped him.””

I sat back.

Every piece was beginning to fit, but the picture was uglier than I'd imagined.

Brianna hadn't merely lied about her relationship with Marcus. She'd become part of a plan involving my company, my family, and a man I'd mourned for twelve years.

“Did she know my father was alive before she met Victor?””

“No. She said she met Robert through him.””

“Then why was she so afraid?””

Ashley turned another page.

It was a copy of a message from Victor.

Once the November transfer is complete, Robert gets his company back. You get your debt cleared. Everyone gets what they want.

Beneath it, Brianna had replied:

And Ethan?

Victor's answer was chillingly simple.

Ethan gets the truth.

I looked at Ashley.

“What did Brianna say to that?””

Ashley slid the final page toward me.

Brianna's response read:

Then I hope he understands why we had to betray him.

I left the hotel with the folder under my arm and the brass key in my pocket.

The next morning, we would open storage unit fourteen.

And I would finally discover what my father had been hiding.

But as I reached the parking garage, my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in twelve years.

*Dad.*
