Chapter 14: The Last Deal

By nine the following morning, Carter Media's conference room had become an improvised command center.

Rebecca coordinated with investigators while the cybersecurity consultant secured the company's financial systems. The external auditor worked through the transaction records, and my father sat at the far end of the table, preparing to give a formal statement.

I stood beside the window, watching employees arrive.

Some waved. Others hurried inside with their heads down.

They had no idea that someone might be preparing to strip the company of its assets before lunch.

My phone vibrated.

Brianna had sent a location.

A warehouse near the Chattahoochee River.

Her message contained only six words.

He says he'll meet me alone.

I showed Rebecca.

“No,” she said immediately.

“She's asking for help.””

“Then we help her without walking into an ambush.””

My father looked up from his statement.

“Victor will expect Ethan to come.””

“Exactly,” Rebecca replied.

“Which is why Ethan won't go alone or enter without a plan.””

I called Brianna.

She answered in a whisper.

“Did you get my message?””

“Yes. Are you safe?””

“For now.””

“Listen carefully. Don't hand Victor anything. Don't sign anything. And don't agree to meet him without letting someone know where you are.””

“He said he'll ruin Marcus if I don't cooperate.””

“Marcus can make his own decisions. You don't have to protect him by helping Victor commit another crime.””

She began crying.

“I don't know how to fix this.””

“You start by telling the truth.””

“I have a statement ready. Everything I remember. Every payment, every message, every time Victor threatened me.””

“Send it to Rebecca.””

“I will.””

I hesitated.

“Brianna, why did you really want the Porsche?””

She was silent for a long time.

“Because I wanted everyone to think I'd finally made it,” she whispered.

“I wanted Ashley to envy me. I wanted Marcus to believe I was worth marrying. And I wanted you to keep loving me even when I knew I didn't deserve it.””

I looked down at the ring box on the table.

“I would have married you.””

“I know.””

“No, I don't think you do. I wasn't buying a car to impress you. I was trying to build a future with you.””

Her breathing became ragged.

“I know that now.””

“Then help us stop Victor.””

She agreed to cooperate.

Rebecca arranged for investigators to monitor the warehouse and established a secure line with Brianna. We would not intervene unless she was in immediate danger, but the authorities would be prepared to respond if Victor attempted to threaten or coerce her.

At eleven thirty, I received a message from Daniel.

I need to talk to you. I can prove who authorized the forged transfer documents.

I forwarded it to Rebecca.

“Could be a trap,” I said.

“Could also be useful evidence. Don't respond yet.””

The consultant examined the message headers.

It had originated from a temporary email account, but the attached file contained a document signed electronically by Daniel.

It was a statement naming Victor as the person who had ordered the fraudulent guarantee.

There was also a second name.

*Melissa Grant, Director of Operations.*

Melissa had worked for me for seven years. She managed contracts, coordinated our major client accounts, and had been with the company longer than Daniel.

I felt sick.

“She has access to our client records.””

“And the internal document system,” the consultant said.

“If she participated, she could have helped prepare the false medical letter and the ownership transfer.””

Rebecca called the investigators.

Within minutes, the plan changed.

We had to secure the company, protect the client records, and preserve the evidence before anyone could delete it.

At noon, the warehouse camera feed appeared on the consultant's screen.

Brianna arrived alone.

She wore jeans and a plain black sweater, with her hair pulled back. She carried a small handbag and kept glancing over her shoulder.

Five minutes later, Victor's SUV pulled into the warehouse.

He stepped out and approached her.

“Where are the documents?”” he asked.

Brianna held her ground.

“I want written proof that my debt is canceled.””

Victor smiled.

“You're in no position to negotiate.””

“You said you'd clear it.””

“I said I'd consider clearing it.””

“You promised!””

“And you promised to deliver the ownership records.””

Brianna opened her handbag.

“I brought something else.””

Victor's expression changed.

“What?””

“A statement. Everything you've done. Every transfer, every threat, every time you told me to lie.””

He stared at her.

Then he laughed.

“You think anyone will believe you?””

“I have messages. Bank records. Emails.””

“You also have a history of stealing money from your boyfriend.””

Brianna flinched.

“Yes,” she said.

“I do. And I'll answer for it.””

For a moment, Victor seemed unable to understand what he was hearing.

Then his face hardened.

“You've just destroyed the only person who was trying to help you.””

“No. I destroyed the lie that you were helping me.””

Victor grabbed her handbag.

Brianna pulled away.

He seized her wrist.

The investigators moved in.

Within seconds, officers surrounded the SUV and ordered Victor to release her.

He shouted that Brianna had stolen confidential documents. He demanded to speak to his lawyer. He insisted the entire meeting was a setup.

But when an investigator asked about the ownership records, Victor stopped talking.

They found a second phone in his jacket, along with printed copies of the forged guarantee and a list of proposed transfers scheduled for the next morning.

He was taken into custody for questioning.

Brianna stood beside the warehouse wall, shaking.

When I arrived with Rebecca, she looked at me as though she expected me to condemn her.

“I gave them everything,” she said.

“I know.””

“I'm going to tell them about the money I took. All of it.””

“Good.””

She wiped her face.

“Does that mean you'll forgive me?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She nodded, accepting the answer.

“I understand.””

An officer approached and asked whether she was willing to provide a formal statement.

Brianna agreed.

Before she left, she turned back toward me.

“I really did love you, Ethan. I just loved what I wanted more.””

I couldn't argue with that.

She walked away with the officer.

Rebecca received a call from the company's cybersecurity consultant.

Melissa Grant had attempted to access the financial system using a backup administrator account. The attempt had been blocked, but the activity confirmed she was still trying to interfere.

Then another alert appeared.

Someone had scheduled an automated email to be sent to Carter Media's largest clients at eight the following morning.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: Evidence of Fraud and Pending Ownership Transfer at Carter Media.*

The message included fabricated financial statements, the forged guarantee, and an announcement claiming the company would be transferred to Cedar Ridge Holdings.

If it reached our clients, the damage could be immediate.

Rebecca looked at me.

“We need to identify the sender and stop that email before it goes out.””

The consultant traced the scheduled message to Melissa's office computer.

Then he opened the final attachment.

It was a letter announcing my resignation as CEO.

My name appeared at the bottom.

And beneath it was an electronic signature that looked exactly like mine.

I stared at the screen.

Victor had been caught.

May you like

But someone inside my company was still trying to finish the job.

And we had less than twenty hours to stop them.
