Chapter 8: The Warning About My Daughter

I read Michael's final message so many times that the words began to blur.

Bring Lily.

My brother had spent years buying my daughter birthday presents, teaching her to throw a baseball, and letting her fall asleep against his shoulder during family movie nights.

He'd been the uncle who arrived with ice cream after her nightmares and sat patiently through every story she invented.

Now he wanted to meet her immediately after I'd discovered his voice on a recording threatening her mother.

I showed Margaret the message.

She read it twice, then placed my phone on the table.

“Do not take Lily anywhere near him.””

“I wasn't planning to.””

“Good. We'll preserve the messages and provide them to investigators. Do not respond to further requests to meet alone.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“Michael knows we have the recording.””

“How?”” I demanded.

“He must have seen Vanessa at the scene. If she told him about the letter, he probably assumed Emily left something behind.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never told him about the letter.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why did he call you that morning?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You said Michael contacted you before the police arrived. Did he call you again after that?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The following morning.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did he want?””

“He asked whether I'd found the folder.””

“And you told him?””

“I said I'd found some documents.””

“Did you tell him you took them?””

“Yes.””

Daniel turned to me.

“Lucas, he knew the evidence was missing before anyone had completed the investigation.””

I felt sick.

Margaret interrupted before the argument could escalate.

“Let's focus on what we can establish. We have a recording, a written account from Vanessa, and messages from Michael. Those need to be preserved. We also need to establish exactly what documents Vanessa removed and whether any were given to Michael.””

Vanessa nodded reluctantly.

“I kept them.””

“Where?”” Margaret asked.

“At my apartment.””

I stared at her.

“You've had those documents for two years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you destroy them?””

She looked at me as if the question hurt.

“Because I knew what I'd done was wrong.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You kept the evidence but hid the letter, lied to me about Emily, and let me believe her death was an ordinary accident.””

“I didn't know what to do!””

“You could have told the truth.””

“I thought Michael would hurt me!””

That silenced the room.

Margaret slowly closed her notebook.

“Has he ever threatened you directly?””

Vanessa rubbed her arms.

“Not in words.””

“What does that mean?””

“He appeared outside my apartment once. He said he was checking whether I was safe, but he knew things he shouldn't have known. He knew where I'd been, who I'd spoken to, and what I'd said.””

“When?””

“About eight months ago.””

I stared at her.

“And you still married into a family with him?””

“I didn't know if he was dangerous, Lucas. I thought if I stayed close to you, I would be protected.””

The confession made my skin crawl.

“Were you marrying me to protect yourself?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“I did love you.””

“But you also thought being my wife would keep Michael away from you.””

She couldn't answer.

That was enough.

I stood and walked to the window. Outside, the evening sky had turned the color of bruised steel. Rain began tapping against the glass, bringing back memories of the night Emily died.

I remembered the phone call from the hospital.

The cold corridor.

The doctor who told me there was nothing more they could do.

And Michael arriving twenty minutes later, wrapping his arms around me, and whispering, “I'm here, Lucas. You're not alone.””

Had he already known what had happened?

Had he stood beside me at Emily's funeral while hiding the reason she was dead?

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from Rachel.

Lily keeps asking why Vanessa was angry about Mommy's letter. She says she heard Vanessa talking to someone on the phone last week. She thinks it was Uncle Michael.

I immediately called my sister.

She answered on the first ring.

“Lucas, I'm sorry,” Rachel said.

“I didn't want to upset you while everything was happening.””

“Tell me exactly what Lily said.””

“She was sitting in the kitchen while Vanessa was on the phone. Lily says Vanessa kept saying, 'He can't know what the girl saw.''”

My stomach tightened.

“What girl?””

“I don't know. When I asked Lily, she said Vanessa looked toward her and ended the call.””

I looked across the room at Vanessa.

She was watching me with frightened eyes.

“Rachel, keep Lily with you. Don't let anyone take her anywhere unless you speak to me first.””

“Lucas, you're scaring me.””

“I know. I'll explain everything soon.””

When I ended the call, Margaret was already standing.

“We need to tell the investigators about the new message and this additional information. And I want to know whether Lily may have witnessed something relevant.””

“She's six,” I said.

“I don't want anyone frightening her.””

“Then we handle it carefully, with appropriate support. No one should coach her or pressure her for details.””

I nodded.

Vanessa rose slowly from her chair.

“Lucas, I think I know what she saw.””

Every person in the room turned toward her.

“What?”” I asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Last month, I took Lily to visit my mother. On the way home, we stopped at a gas station. A man approached our car and started talking to her.””

“Who?””

“I didn't recognize him. But he knew her name.””

I felt the room grow smaller.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“He asked whether she remembered the night her mother died.””

Daniel swore under his breath.

I grabbed the back of a chair.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought he was trying to frighten me. He said Lily might remember something important when she got older.””

“What did Lily tell him?””

“I don't know. I was outside the car, paying for gas. When I came back, he was gone.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“Did you report this?””

“No.””

“Did you tell Rachel?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone?””

She shook her head.

I felt an anger so intense it almost made me dizzy.

Someone had approached my six-year-old daughter and asked about her mother's death, and Vanessa had kept it secret.

I reached for my phone.

“I'm calling the investigator.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my sleeve.

“Lucas, wait.””

I pulled away.

“Don't touch me.””

She recoiled.

Then she whispered, “The man at the gas station wasn't a stranger.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She stared at the floor.

“I recognized him after he left.””

“Who was he?””

Her lips trembled.

“He used to work for your brother.””

Before I could ask another question, Rachel called again.

Her voice was panicked.

“Lucas, you need to come here now.””

“What happened?””

“Lily found something in her little backpack. She says Uncle Michael gave it to her last Christmas and told her to keep it secret.””

My heart began pounding.

“What is it?””

Rachel hesitated.

“A photograph of Emily's car.””

Then she whispered, “There's a man standing beside it, Lucas. Lily says she recognizes him.””

“Who?””

Rachel's answer made my blood run cold.

“Your brother.””
