Chapter 13: She Chose Me Before We Met
I read Emily's final sentence until the words stopped looking like words.
She chose you.
Three words. A date. And a warning from a woman who had apparently understood the danger long before I did.
I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
“Lucas?””
“What did Emily mean when she wrote that you chose me?””
Silence.
“Vanessa, answer me.””
“I wanted to explain this in person.””
“Then explain it now.””
Her breathing grew uneven.
“Michael told you about the trust, didn't he?””
“He told me you were involved in the withdrawals.””
“I wasn't the person who took the money.””
“But you helped him move it.””
“I handled paperwork for a consulting company. I didn't understand what he was doing at first.””
“Emily did.””
“Yes.””
“And she discovered you were connected to it.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I never planned for any of this to happen.””
“That's not an answer.””
She took a shaky breath.
“Michael introduced me to people who could help me establish a consulting business. He said the company needed someone who could manage invoices and financial records outside the office. I thought it was legitimate.””
“And when you realized it wasn't?””
“I was already involved. I was afraid of what would happen if I walked away.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why did you start dating me?””
“I loved you.””
“Why did you choose me?””
She didn't answer.
I looked at Emily's handwriting again.
“Vanessa, did you know who I was before we met?””
A long silence followed.
Finally, she whispered, “Yes.””
The confession felt like a door slamming shut.
“How?””
“Michael showed me photographs of you. He told me about your company, your family, and Emily.””
“You were researching me?””
“He said you might be able to help us.””
“Help you do what?””
“Keep the company stable while Michael repaid the money.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“So you approached me because you thought marrying me would give you access to my finances.””
“Not at first!””
“When did that change?””
“I don't know. Lucas, I did fall in love with you. Somewhere along the way, it became real.””
I wanted to believe there had been a moment when her feelings became genuine. I wanted to believe the dinners, the quiet evenings, and the way she'd held my hand when I couldn't stop crying over Emily were not all performances.
But every memory now had another possible meaning.
“Did Emily know you were dating me?””
“Yes.””
“Did she try to warn me?””
Vanessa began sobbing harder.
“She confronted me after she found the trust records. She said I had no right to enter your life under false pretenses.””
“And what did you say?””
“I told her I loved you.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“She said love wasn't an excuse for lying.””
I stared at the wall.
That sounded exactly like Emily.
“She told me she was going to give you everything,” Vanessa continued.
“The financial records, the emails, the recording. She said she wanted you to decide what to do with the truth.””
“And you stopped her.””
“I tried to convince her to wait.””
“By threatening her?””
“I never threatened to hurt her!””
“You locked my daughter in a bathroom because she found Emily's letter.””
Vanessa fell silent.
I continued, “You watched me grieve for two years while you kept evidence from me. You let me believe Emily had died in an ordinary accident. And you were about to become Lily's stepmother.””
“I know what I did.””
“Do you?””
“Yes,” she whispered.
“And I'll have to live with it.””
I ended the call.
For a long time, I sat alone with Emily's letter.
Then I noticed a faint indentation on the final page, as if another sheet had once rested beneath it. I tilted the paper toward the desk lamp and saw the ghost of a few handwritten words.
I could make out only fragments.
...the account...
...original beneficiary...
...Lily must be protected...
My daughter's name made me sit upright.
I photographed the page and sent the image to Margaret, who arranged for the original letter to be examined without further handling.
An hour later, she called.
“Lucas, I've been reviewing the documents from the old office. There's a trust agreement connected to your parents' estate that we haven't discussed.””
“What does it have to do with Lily?””
“I'm not sure yet. But Emily appears to have been investigating whether someone altered the beneficiary arrangements.””
I felt a chill.
“My parents left money for Lily?””
“Possibly. We need to examine the original documents before drawing conclusions.””
I thought of Michael's confession. The stolen trust money. Vanessa's connection to the consulting accounts. Emily's fear that something had been taken from our family.
“Could someone have changed the beneficiary without my knowledge?””
“It's possible, depending on the terms and the documents involved. But I won't speculate until we verify them.””
She asked me to come to her office.
When I arrived, she had placed three documents on the conference table. The first was a copy of my parents' original estate plan. The second was a financial statement showing withdrawals from a trust account. The third was a more recent amendment bearing a signature that looked remarkably like mine.
I stared at it.
“I never signed this.””
Margaret nodded.
“That is precisely why we need an independent forensic examination.””
The amendment transferred control of a portion of the family trust to a private company.
The company was registered to a person named Vanessa Reed.
My future bride.
Margaret tapped the signature.
“If this document is forged, it could be central to the investigation. If it is authentic, we'll need to establish the circumstances under which it was signed.””
“I never authorized it.””
“Then we'll need evidence to support that statement.””
She slid another sheet toward me.
It was a bank record showing that a substantial amount of money had been transferred from the trust into Vanessa's company over several years.
I felt sick.
“How much?””
Margaret gave me the total.
Nearly six hundred thousand dollars.
I sat down.
The theft from my brother's trust was not a side issue. It had become the center of everything.
Emily had discovered that someone was moving money from a family trust. Michael had taken funds and recruited Vanessa to help conceal transactions. But the forged amendment suggested someone had gone further, attempting to redirect assets that might have been intended for Lily.
I thought of my daughter asking whether she had done something wrong by finding her mother's letter.
I thought of Emily trying to protect her.
Then my phone rang.
It was the lead investigator.
“Mr. Mercer, we've located Gregory Shaw.””
My heart began pounding.
“Where?””
“He's agreed to speak with us. He has information about the vehicle and the night your wife died.””
“Does he admit tampering with her car?””
“He has not provided a complete statement yet. But he wants to cooperate.””
I stood.
“Can I speak to him?””
“Not directly. We'll arrange an interview through the proper process, and we'll keep you informed.””
I thanked him and ended the call.
Margaret watched me carefully.
“Lucas, this is moving beyond a family dispute. Let the investigators handle the evidence.””
“I will.””
“And do not confront Vanessa or Michael.””
“I won't.””
But as I gathered the documents, one question kept burning in my mind.
If Vanessa had chosen me before we'd met, and Emily had discovered the truth before she died, then my marriage had never been the beginning of a new life.
It had been the final piece of a plan that started long before I understood I was part of it.
And the person who had tried to protect my daughter had paid for that knowledge with her life.

I wasn't going to let her warning disappear with her.
Not this time.
