Chapter 7: Twenty Minutes Before the Police Arrived

“Why were you at the accident scene?””

My question hung in Margaret Cole's conference room like a loaded weapon.

Vanessa sat across from me, still wearing her wedding dress. The ivory fabric was wrinkled at the waist, and a streak of mascara ran beneath one eye. Hours earlier, she'd been preparing to promise me forever. Now she looked like someone waiting for a prison door to close.

“I didn't cause the accident,” she said.

I leaned forward.

“That wasn't my question.””

“I know.””

“Then answer it.””

She twisted the engagement ring on her finger. For the first time since I'd met her, she seemed unable to find the right words.

Daniel sat beside the window, refusing to look at either of us. Margaret had already contacted a colleague who specialized in criminal investigations and instructed everyone in the room not to delete messages, alter records, or contact potential witnesses without legal guidance.

I didn't care about legal strategy.

I wanted to know why the woman I'd almost married had been near my wife's wrecked car.

Vanessa finally lifted her head.

“Michael called me that night.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

“He told me Emily had been in an accident.””

“How did he know before the police arrived?””

“He didn't explain.””

“And you believed him?””

“He sounded terrified.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“Michael sounded terrified, so you drove to the scene?””

“Yes.””

“Instead of calling me?””

Her eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

He shook his head slowly, as if begging her not to continue.

I slammed my palm against the table.

“Stop looking at him! You're talking to me!””

Vanessa flinched.

“Michael said Emily had something that could destroy all of us. He told me to find it before the police did.””

The room went silent.

Margaret opened her notebook.

“Did you go inside the vehicle?””

Vanessa nodded.

My chest tightened.

“What did you take?””

“Nothing from Emily's body.””

“That's not what she asked.””

Vanessa squeezed her eyes shut.

“There was a folder on the passenger-side floor. The car door was open, and the papers were scattered. I picked up what I could find.””

“What was in the folder?””

“Copies of financial records. Emails. A list of transfers.””

“And you took them?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her, struggling to reconcile the confession with the woman I'd known.

“You went to my wife's wrecked car, took evidence, and then came home to tell me she'd died in an accident.””

“I didn't know she was dead when I arrived!””

“You said you found her car.””

“Michael told me she'd been taken to the hospital. He said the police were still searching the vehicle.””

Margaret interrupted.

“Did you see Emily?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. I saw the car and an ambulance leaving the area. I never saw her body.””

“Who else was there?””

“Michael. He was standing near the tree line.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“My brother was at the scene?””

“Yes.””

“Before the police?””

“I think so.””

“Why?””

Vanessa began crying in earnest.

“He said he needed the folder. He said if the police found those documents, everyone connected to the company would be investigated. He told me to get them before someone else did.””

“And you obeyed him.””

“I thought I was protecting you!””

I stood.

“Don't use my name to excuse what you did.””

She stared at me, tears slipping down her cheeks.

“I loved you, Lucas.””

“You stole evidence from my dead wife's car.””

“I was scared!””

“So was Emily!””

The words ripped out of me before I could stop them.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

For a moment, I saw something in her expression that looked like genuine remorse.

Then she said, “There was something else.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“Emily wasn't alone when the accident happened.””

Daniel suddenly turned from the window.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I saw another vehicle.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“Describe it.””

“A dark SUV. It was parked farther down the road, partly hidden behind the trees.””

“Did you see who was inside?””

“No.””

“Did you see it move?””

Vanessa nodded.

“It pulled away when Michael arrived.””

My mind raced.

“Did you tell the police?””

“No.””

“Did you tell me?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone?””

She hesitated.

“Michael.””

I closed my eyes.

Every answer uncovered another betrayal.

Margaret asked Vanessa to write down everything she remembered, including the approximate time, the location, and the people she had contacted. She also instructed Vanessa not to destroy any messages or documents connected to that night.

When Vanessa finished, Margaret placed the statement in a folder.

“We cannot conclude from this alone that the accident was intentional,” she said.

“But taking documents from the scene and withholding that information are serious matters. The investigators need to hear this directly.””

I nodded.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“Is there anything else you've hidden from me?””

She stared at the table.

“No.””

I waited.

She began to cry again.

“No, Lucas. I swear.””

I wanted to believe her.

That frightened me more than anything.

My phone rang.

Michael's name appeared on the screen.

For several seconds, I simply watched it light up.

Then I answered.

“Lucas!”” My brother sounded breathless.

“I've been trying to reach you. What happened to the wedding?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

“It's canceled,” I said.

Silence.

Then Michael replied, “I'm sorry, little brother. Are you okay?””

I nearly laughed at the tenderness in his voice.

“Where are you?””

“At the office. Why?””

“I need to see you.””

“Of course. Come over whenever you want.””

I lowered my voice.

“Michael, I found Emily's letter.””

The silence that followed was different.

Longer.

Colder.

Then my brother said, “You shouldn't have opened it.””

My blood turned to ice.

Before I could respond, he added, “Lucas, listen to me. Whatever Daniel and Vanessa tell you, don't believe them. They were both involved in what happened to Emily.””

I stared at the phone.

“How do you know what they told me?””

Michael hung up.

A second later, a message appeared.

Meet me alone tonight. I'll tell you what really happened.

May you like

Then another message followed.

And bring Lily. There's something you need to understand about your daughter.
