Chapter 6: The Nursery That Was Never Meant for Noah

The attorney placed a leather folder on the dessert table.

My mother stared at it.

"Why are you here?""

James Porter didn't answer immediately.

He looked at Daniel.

"Your bank flagged several unusual transfers from the joint account. Given the amounts involved, I advised you to preserve every document and avoid making any further transfers.""

Daniel nodded.

"I understand.""

James turned toward Margaret.

"Mrs. Wilson, are you familiar with Wilson Family Consulting?""

She lifted her chin.

"It's my business.""

"Did you receive funds from your son's joint account?""

"I received a payment for professional services.""

"What services?""

"Consulting.""

James opened the folder.

"Can you provide an invoice?""

Margaret didn't respond.

He placed a printed document on the table.

"This company received twenty-seven thousand dollars from Daniel and Claire's savings account. There is no corresponding invoice, service agreement, or documented business purpose.""

Margaret's face tightened.

"That doesn't prove anything.""

James nodded.

"That's correct. It does, however, raise questions that need to be answered.""

Daniel looked at the paperwork.

"What else did you find?""

James removed another sheet.

"Three separate payments were made to an account associated with a company called Bright Beginnings Family Services.""

Rachel immediately stepped forward.

"That's the agency Claire told me she was using.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Do you know them?""

"I spoke to a woman there once. She said they were helping coordinate the adoption.""

James turned toward Rachel.

"Did you receive any money from that organization?""

"No.""

"Did they provide any legal services?""

Rachel shook her head.

"Not that I know of.""

James wrote something down.

Daniel stared at the payment dates.

The first transfer had been made in April.

The second in May.

The third in June.

Each was for several thousand dollars.

"Mom," he said, "what did this company do?""

Margaret folded her arms.

"I don't know.""

Claire suddenly looked up.

"Mom, tell him.""

Margaret shot her a warning look.

"Be quiet.""

Daniel turned toward his wife.

"What does she know?""

Claire wiped her face.

"Bright Beginnings wasn't an adoption agency.""

Rachel frowned.

"Then what was it?""

Claire hesitated.

"It was a company that arranged private pregnancy presentations.""

I blinked.

"What does that mean?""

Claire looked at Daniel.

"They helped women create the appearance of a pregnancy for family announcements, photographs, and events.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

James carefully closed his folder.

"That is a rather unusual business description.""

Claire nodded.

"They sold artificial bellies, maternity clothing, fake ultrasound photo packages, and appointment scheduling services.""

Daniel looked at the wrapper Sophie had found.

"That's where you bought it?""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

Sophie, who had been sitting beside me, looked up.

"I told you it was the red tummy.""

I kissed her forehead.

"You did, sweetheart.""

Daniel looked toward the nursery gift bags.

"Did you use the company for everything?""

Claire nodded.

"The pregnancy announcement. The photographs. The baby shower.""

He stared at her.

"Even the invitations?""

She began crying again.

"Yes.""

He looked around the room.

The giant balloon arch.

The custom cake.

The framed ultrasound photographs.

The tiny shoes placed beside the gift table.

"Was there ever a real plan to bring Noah home?""

Claire didn't answer.

Rachel stepped forward.

"There was. I signed the initial agreement because I believed Daniel was involved.""

Daniel looked at her.

"But you never met me.""

"No. Claire said you were working overseas.""

Daniel frowned.

"Overseas?""

"She told me you were managing a project in London.""

He looked at me.

"I've never even been to London.""

I shook my head.

Rachel's eyes filled.

"I should have questioned it sooner.""

Daniel gently touched Noah's blanket.

"Don't blame yourself.""

James interrupted.

"There's one more document.""

He pulled a printed email from the folder.

It had been sent from Margaret's business account to Claire six weeks earlier.

The subject line read:

*FINAL FAMILY ARRANGEMENT.*

Daniel began reading.

The message explained that Claire should continue the pregnancy presentation until after the baby shower.

Afterward, she was supposed to tell Daniel that she had suffered a medical emergency and that the baby had been lost.

Then she would claim she was too emotionally devastated to discuss adoption.

Daniel read the final paragraph twice.

"Mom...""

Margaret closed her eyes.

The email continued:

Once Daniel accepts that the pregnancy has ended, we can tell him adoption is no longer an option. He will eventually stop asking questions. Keep the nursery as it is for now. We can sell the baby furniture and recover some of the expenses.

Daniel lowered the paper.

"You planned to tell me my child had died?""

Claire began sobbing.

Margaret finally snapped.

"It was the only way to end this mess!""

Daniel looked at her.

"End what mess?""

"Your obsession with having a family!""

The room fell silent.

She continued, her voice rising.

"You were going to throw your entire life away for a child you hadn't even met! What if the mother changed her mind? What if the baby had problems? What if he wasn't healthy?""

Daniel looked down at Noah.

Then back at her.

"He is a baby, Mom. Not a financial investment.""

Margaret shook her head.

"You don't understand what I was trying to prevent.""

"No. I understand perfectly.""

He placed the email on the table.

"You were going to make me grieve a child who was alive because you didn't approve of the way he came into this world.""

Margaret's expression hardened.

"I didn't want you raising someone else's child.""

Rachel stepped forward.

"He's not someone else's child. He's my son, and I was trying to find him a father who would love him.""

Daniel looked at her.

"And I still want to know him.""

Claire suddenly stood.

"Daniel, please. We can fix this.""

He turned toward her.

"How?""

"I'll explain everything. We can start again.""

"Start again?""

She reached for his hand.

"We can have a real baby shower later. We can tell everyone the truth.""

Daniel gently pulled away.

"There won't be another baby shower with you.""

Claire began crying uncontrollably.

James quietly suggested that everyone leave the financial documents untouched and allow the attorneys to handle the matter.

Daniel nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"Emily, can you take Sophie outside?""

I stood.

"Of course.""

But before I could move, Sophie pointed toward the nursery gift bags.

"Mommy?""

"What is it?""

She looked at the tiny blue shoes on the table.

"Why did Aunt Claire buy all those things if she didn't want the baby?""

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel spoke softly.

"Maybe she did want him, sweetheart. Sometimes grown-ups make terrible choices because they're afraid.""

Sophie considered that.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Uncle Daniel, are you still going to be his daddy?""

My brother's eyes filled with tears.

He knelt in front of her.

"If his mommy and the people helping us agree that it's the right thing, I'm going to do everything I can.""

Sophie smiled.

"Then he can have my old teddy bear.""

Daniel laughed through his tears.

"That's very generous.""

Rachel looked down at Noah.

For a moment, I thought the worst of the afternoon was finally over.

Then James' phone rang.

He glanced at the screen and stepped away to answer.

A minute later, he returned.

His expression was serious.

"Daniel, I just received a call from the bank.""

"What happened?""

James looked at the account statement.

"Someone attempted to withdraw another forty thousand dollars from your joint savings account this morning.""

Daniel frowned.

"Who?""

James slowly turned toward Claire.

"The withdrawal request was submitted using your wife's authorization.""

Claire shook her head violently.

"I didn't do that!""

James opened the final page of his folder.

"There's a problem, though.""

He looked directly at Daniel.

"The destination account wasn't your mother's business this time.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Whose account was it?""

James placed the document on the table.

The account holder's name was clearly printed.

*Emily Wilson.*

My name.

May you like

Daniel slowly turned toward me.

And for the first time that afternoon, I had absolutely no idea what to say.
